I have so many guilty food pleasures. One of my favorites is provolone wrapped in prosciutto, stuffed in a pickled cherry pepper and marinated in olive oil. Cheese and salty pork in a fiery pepper, soaked in oil. Sounds healthy, eh? Not. But my delightfully clever husband comes home with a half-dozen occasionally. I look at them disapprovingly, and he always says with a devilish grin, “I’m sorry, are we behaving this week? I didn’t know.” I love that grin. The Brentwood Arts Exchange accepts proposals for exhibitions from artists and curators on an ongoing basis. Proposals are reviewed periodically during the course of the year. The exhibition schedule is normally determined at least one year in advance.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists, age 18+

MEDIA: All media

DEADLINE: Ongoing

NOTIFICATION: As decisions are made

DECISIONS: Proposals will be reviewed by Brentwood Arts Exchange and other Prince George’s County Parks & Recreation Arts & Cultural Heritage Division staff.

ENTRY FEE: None

SALES: The M-NCPPC will retain a 25% commission on all art works sold during, or as a result of the exhibition. M-NCPPC will be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artworks while they are in the custody of the Gateway Arts Center.

ABOUT the GALLERY: Having celebrated it’s grand opening on March 19, 2010, the Gateway Arts Center in Brentwood, Maryland is a dynamic space dedicated to presenting and promoting the visual arts. The center is home to more than a dozen artists’ studios, Gateway CDC’s 39th Street Gallery, and the Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center’s Gallery 110. The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission’s Brentwood Arts Exchange occupies approximately one quarter of the building, featuring a gallery of changing exhibitions by regional artists, a contemporary fine crafts store, and an arts learning workshop. The Center is a place for people of all ages to meet, engage and learn about art, purchase one-of-a-kind craft objects, and explore new talents.

It takes great restraint not to continue food patterns in our menus. I am guilty of taco night, pizza night, and buffalo chicken night. I am trying to rationalize it by changing up the taco and pizza ingredients, but it is a pattern, nonetheless. I’m not saying it si a bad thing, I just think it can lead to dangerous stall patterns that end in pre-packaged and fast food that I try to live without. I have made my own uneasy peace with green living. I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food. Isn’t it always with me? I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming. Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like. I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating. ELIGIBILITY: Artists, age 18+ residing in continental US

MEDIA: All original 2-D and 3-D media accepted. Photographs and artist prints must be numbered (editioned) to be considered for an award. No mechanical reproduction of originals (including giclee prints) accepted. All entries must be of original design and personal execution, and completed within the last two years. Installations will be considered only if the artist agrees to install the work on site.

THEME: The title of the show reflects the geographical fact that Oklahoma is located in the middle of the United States. (Open a road atlas of the United States & Oklahoma is on the Centerfold). The theme is open to the artist’s interpretation and is in no way restricted to portraying Oklahoma.

DEADLINE: August 29, 2012

NOTIFICATION: September 21, 2012

ENTRY FEE: 1 for $30, 2 for $35, or 3 for $40

JUROR: Kristy Deetz, professor in the Art Discipline at the University of Wisconsin—Green Bay, received her MFA in painting and drawing from Ohio State University.

Deetz has taught painting and drawing at a number of universities and art schools over the past 25 years and frequently gives encaustic painting workshops at art centers such as Anderson Ranch, OxBow, Haystack, and Penland. Her extensive exhibition record includes competitive, invitational and solo exhibitions throughout the United States.

AWARDS: Total of $6000 USD: 1st place $3000, 2nd place $1500, 3rd place $800, and 3 honorable mentions of $250 each.
