I pursued the holy grail of dining in the Holy City recently. My meal began on the porch of a grand Southern home in historic Charleston, SC overlooking a garden of heirloom blooms cultivated on the property. My meal began with a hand-propagated, rare tomato varietal and a gorgeous regional wine fermented from heirloom grapes. Even blind folded, I couldn’t have expected to be anywhere other than one of the sparkling jewel cities of the culinary culture to be experienced only in the South. JUROR: Annette Cone-Skelton is the Co-Founder/President/CEO/Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Under her leadership, MOCAGA has become a vital part of the cultural community of the state. In addition, Cone-Skelton has over 30 years of experience as an exhibiting artist, fine arts instructor, curator, editor & owner of a fine arts advisory firm. She holds a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art. She currently serves on the Leadership Cabinet of Arts Leadership League of GA. She has served on the boards of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition, Atlanta College of Art, Art Papers, The Contemporary & the Contemporary Art Society of the High Museum of Art.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award & two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, add’l non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented. Award recipients will be announced on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the opening reception for A Sense of Place.

JUROR: Terri Lloyd is a San Francisco Bay Area transplant who has called Los Angeles home since 1980. Under the influence of a Sixties latch-key-kid youth, the circumstances of a working class life did not provide the conventional means to an art education or experience. Introduced to the Apple computer in the 1980s, a love affair with digital technology was born. Lloyd’s career has been a two-pronged path between fine & commercial arts.

In 2010, Lloyd retired from the commercial arts path to pursue a lifelong interest of fine arts. She continues to become more active as a leader in community arts organizations and activities. When not working in the studio, Lloyd runs The Haggus Society, a feminist art collective for women over the age of 40.

*Just one other note. I showed work in the first Edges & Curves exhibit after meeting Terri Lloyd through the Featured Artist contest. More and more people are farming. There may be fewer commercial farms, but I find that more and more people are taking the time to grow something. Not everything; just something. This image (left) is from the Facebook feed of a friend of mine in the suburbs of Charleston, WV who is sprouting garlic for container gardening on his back patio. He planted tomato seedlings in between the sprouted cloves. It isn’t a huge endeavor, but he’ll have the best salsa of anyone in his neighborhood this summer. LOVE. So I picked a peck of peppers today. Not really. But I did buy a bushel of apples out of cold storage from my local orchard. I just couldn’t wait any longer for a sensory overload. I usually wait for the first bite of sauteed ramps, but that wasn’t enough this year. So, I am home with a bushel of Mountain York’s. This week will be filled with the making of apple sauce, apple chips, apple butter, and fresh apples in everything from chicken salad to peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes.
