It is almost time for winter cabbage. I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter. It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop. Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste. CURATORS: Marty Henley has a B.S. in Computer Animation and Design, a M.A. in art with a concentration in sculpture, and is a Professional Illustrator and Game Designer. He has a fascination with organic and inorganic textures and masses, their combinations in the creation of imaginary artistic creatures, and the emotional and psychological connections the viewers have with these creations. Marty is currently an Adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University, were he teaches 2D design, 3D design, and Color Theory.

Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines, including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, Flash Forward, and the Griffin Museum. In addition, she is a reviewer and educator at many photo festivals across the United States. In 2014, Aline received the Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER, but she considers her children her greatest achievement. She is a founding member of the Six Shooters Collective and is currently teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Santa Fe Photo Workshops, and the Maine Media Workshops. Aline lives and works in Los Angeles.

I ran across Buddha’s finger a couple of years ago. What a bizarre, other-worldly looking fruit. It is a type of citron and has the aroma of a lemon. It makes great candied peel and is fantastic for flavoring vodka, or infusing oil or sugar. The best part is that the pith doesn’t have the bitter taste that is commonly in the white of the lemon. I would love to have a keep just for ornamental reasons since fruit tends to last longer “on the vine” than flowers do. The fruit of this tree just doesn’t look real. My experience with pre-packaged instant food is sketchy at best. You might find a box of instant oatmeal in my cabinet for lazy winter mornings. But I find that some foods that are unnaturally dehydrated to the extreme never really recover, like cheese & coffee, while others thrive, like cocoa and popcorn. I think of instant foods a little differently –preferring portable raw nuts, fruits, and even a few cheeses, best. This time of year though, pomegranates are my favorite. JUROR: Michael Kirchoff straddles the worlds of both commercial and fine art photography. His consulting, training, and overall support of his fellow photographer and artist continues with help in constructing ones vision, producing artist lectures, and finding exhibition opportunities, which fill the gaps in time away from active shooting.

What happens when food imitates visual art? At Art Basel Hong Kong in 2015, that question was answered by 10 stellar chefs. The image to the left is L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon combination of French sea bass, seasonal black truffle, celery mousse line & Malabar pepper sauce to recreate Zao Wou-ki’s dark abstract work. This dish, and at least 9 others in this vein, were available at restaurants in the Hong Kong area back in March. I can’t know how tasty it was, but, my oh my, how beautiful.
