I haven’t been to Rhode Island in years. The Ocean State is famous for a lot of foods like the delight that is the delicate version of calamari. But, I can’t resist a couple of beverages that call Rhode Island home–frozen lemonade from Del’s® and cabinets. Cabinets are a coffee drink or milkshake-like treat made from coffee ice cream, coffee syrup and milk. They aren’t easy to find, but they ARE worth the search. JUROR: Andrew Stein Raftery is a printmaker specializing in narrative scenes of contemporary American life. Trained in painting & printmaking at Boston University & Yale, he has focused on burin engraving for the past 12 years, publishing the portfolios Suit Shopping in 2002 and Open House in 2008. In 2003 Raftery received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and in 2008 he was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was elected to membership in the National Academy in 2009. He is currently a professor of printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design.

AWARDS: Cash awards will be presented and are determined at the Juror’s discretion.

CURATOR: Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

AWARDS: The number of billboards will vary depending on the number of submissions received, the availability of viable billboards & current market prices for those billboards. Viable billboards mean that they exist in well-traveled (car and foot traffic) locations. All billboards will include the artist’s name. The website will have images of each selected work, the artist’s name and a link to their website.

I live within 10 miles of two fantastic apple orchards. Between them, they grow over 125+ varieties on more than 40,000 trees. With that many varieties, many are available year ’round via the orchards’ cold storage. But, fresh apple season is upon us. Zilber oversees the Daphne and Peter Farago Gallery, a dedicated space for modern and contemporary craft, design, and decorative arts. Zilber holds a BA in art history from The University of Chicago and an MA from the Bard Graduate Center for Decorative Arts, Design History & Material Culture.

CURATOR: John Matkowsky runs the Los Angeles drkrm, a black & white darkroom as well as exhibit space that specializes in more under-the-radar, counterculture presentations that support documentary & photo-journalistic work & alternative photographic processes. The national magazine, Juxtapoz, has called Matkowsky a “visionary” for his edgy, dramatic showcases.

AWARDS: Winner receives review by curator plus online exhibition (front page of site for a month, then archived). Winner also receives Q&A making a substantial PR piece for the photographer. In addition 15% of all artist fees go to the curator’s favorite charity, the Soi Dog Foundation, as well as the first place winner’s favorite charities. There is a 2nd place winner and 2 honorable mentions which will show their bio and images archived on our site.

My kitchen smells of heavenly green cardamom. It IS expensive, and I AM cheap. But, I never regret the purchase. I offset the expense by buying it ground instead of in the pod. It loses flavor quickly when you store it ground, but cardamom is used in a huge number of cultures for dishes both sweet & savory. It is a staple of Indian & Thai foods, but it is also found in Nordic breads & sweet treats. You will love what cardamom will do for rice pudding or hot tea. At the State Museum, she has organized over 90 exhibitions. O’Reilly received her MA in painting from Kean University, and her work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the region. Her research and exhibition interests echo those found in her own creative output and include issues of chance, identity and mortality, among others, while the formal qualities of particular interest are density, repetition and serial structure.

My family enjoys participating in cultural celebrations from around the world. None of us grew up with any sort of specific cultural traditions aside from spaghetti night or BBQ on Father’s Day. So each year we adopt Chinese New Year, Oktoberfest & even the Day of the Dead as our very own. Chinese New Year gives us an extra 6 weeks or so to make plans for the upcoming year (Yes, we really are late to everything –even making resolutions, ha). Dia de Los Muertos offers us a time to tell stories about those we’ve lost. I’ve lost a lot of people lately, and it is a great comfort to take time to celebrate them. If someone has something good to say, they post their names in all CAPS. I am hopeful that this next Call will redeem the notion of posting, or in this case exhibiting, anonymously.
