It is time for holiday mayhem again. I want to encourage you to just say “no”. I’m not suggesting you expect your five year old to give up gifts in lieu of a shiny red apple. But I do want you to give up the undue pressure to make anyone’s holiday perfect, including your own. I do want to encourage you to use your resources in support of the the people you love and what they can offer or create in this world. Make it have heart or just say “no”. Being a great cook, is an interdisciplinary skill. I know a handful of people who claim to be so uncreative that they “can’t draw a stick figure”. Clearly, creativity is not measured by the quality of your stick figures. But I am willing to accept those sorts of self-assessments –unless they come from a great cook. Composing the perfect dish requires great taste, some basic scientific knowledge, both an eye for design and nose for the perfect unexpected ingredient. JUROR: Heather Balchunas, originally from Westfield, MA has a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art in 1997. Being active in the art community is an important part of her growth as an artist. During her tenure at the Puppet Showplace Theatre, Balchunas found further creative stimulation through her position as an arts administrator. Whether it is puppet construction, theater, set design, or painting, one creative process influences another.

Dan Dez has been developing games since 2002. After receiving his BFA in Computer Animation at Ringling School of Art and Design, he started his game development career which has spanned around the country and across PS2, GameCube, XBOX, Xbox360, PS3, iOS, Android and PC. He is now and independent game developer who has always had an appreciation for Fine Arts. After graduating from RISD, Sean Hilts worked as freelance Graphic Designer, founded The Brothers Hilts, an illustration/design team, and is currently a Senior User Experience Consultant.

AWARDS: Cash awards will be given for Best in Show, determined by a panel of jurors & a People’s Choice award, chosen via online voting.

I find myself craving carpaccio lately, but I’m not much of a meat eater anymore. Carpaccio is typically made using the highest quality, thinly sliced beef sirloin then served raw. But in recent years, the same term is now used in reference to the same treatment of fish and vegetables. The only unifying factor is the dressing of raw ingredients with lemon and olive oil, salt and pepper. Done correctly, the balance of ingredients in like a delicate collage. That beautiful balance is what I really crave. It can’t be done by recipe, only by feel, by taste, by experience. This Call wants the same collage. Take a look…

Watrous received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and his MFA from Kent State University. He is an Adjunct Instructor at Penn State University teaching an art overview class that focuses on western art history.

But, did you know that leafy greens are among the most dangerous types of foods? Remember the bagged spinach epidemic from a few years ago. Food for women apparently exists. Well, it isn’t food exclusively for women, but I discovered there are a few foods that are even better for you if you’re female– including one of my favorites, flaxseed. Not using flaxseed? I love ground flaxseed as a substitute for bread crumbs on top of casseroles. I mix flaxseed with a little Parmesan and a mist of olive oil and return the casserole to the oven until it just starts to brown. Flaxseed adds a nutty flavor that I prefer over cracker crumbs, hands down. This Call is also meant for women. Take a look…

“The summer series of crates were my first attempt at abstract painting on a 3-dimensional form using the desaturation scale. The entire palette was created from the combination of two complementary colors (yellow-green and purple) that when combined form a neutral grey. The colors matched the rainy summer days of the mountains perfectly, and the abstract lines mimic the horizontal landscape lines.” –Laura Sellers

It is almost time for winter cabbage. I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter. It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop. Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste. He has a fascination with organic and inorganic textures and masses, their combinations in the creation of imaginary artistic creatures, and the emotional and psychological connections the viewers have with these creations. Marty is currently an Adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University, were he teaches 2D design, 3D design, and Color Theory.

Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines, including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, Flash Forward, and the Griffin Museum. In addition, she is a reviewer and educator at many photo festivals across the United States. In 2014, Aline received the Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER, but she considers her children her greatest achievement. She is a founding member of the Six Shooters Collective and is currently teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Santa Fe Photo Workshops, and the Maine Media Workshops. Aline lives and works in Los Angeles.

I ran across Buddha’s finger a couple of years ago. What a bizarre, other-worldly looking fruit. It is a type of citron and has the aroma of a lemon. It makes great candied peel and is fantastic for flavoring vodka, or infusing oil or sugar. The best part is that the pith doesn’t have the bitter taste that is commonly in the white of the lemon. I would love to have a keep just for ornamental reasons since fruit tends to last longer “on the vine” than flowers do. The fruit of this tree just doesn’t look real. The next Call wants just the opposite–subject matter that appears real but is not. This is a science fiction lovers dream…
