an imperfect PLACE for food

My kitchen table drama is ongoing.  It is a 45″ round pedestal-style table with a black, faux-milkpaint finish.  Black shows every speck, and that’s worse when your driveway is gravel (or, in my case, not a great housekeeper).  Every time I clean the table, the stain of of the finish comes off a little more and the chairs are a misery.  It gets used as a makeshift desk, studio worktable & only an occasional serving surface, so I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.  My mother’s solution was to quilt a new set of wedge-shaped placements.  All better, right?  Gotta love her optimism.  This next Call won’t make everything better either, but it is a lovely improvement.  Plus, it is a ongoing deadline…

Check out this Open Call for Entries from The Woven Tale Press for unsolicited submissions.  No entry fee for this opportunity.  Writing submissions are welcomed as well.  Art publication is worth the effort, and I’ll keep publishing them until we find the right one for you.  Take a look…

pretty PROVISIONS

Design impacts my food choices.  Bad or excessive packaging will decrease the chances that I will try a processed food.  And what’s with fruit like apples and oranges in individually wrapped packages?  Don’t they already have their own packaging?  I recently discovered that I am not the only one that chooses wine, at least in part, based on the label design.  It is okay; you can admit it too.  Design is a huge part of the impact of this art magazine.  I love this publication.  Maybe you will too…

It has been a revolutionary sort of weekend.  I am struggling to figure out what to make of the adults in this world.  While I am trying not to give up on people who should KNOW better, my heart finds relief in the children that DO better.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Richard Brocken, offers a view, often of children, that is reverent and ethereal, sometimes funny or mischievous.  Entirely humane.

“Watch from your gut, listen to your soul” Peter Vial

___

We are, in total, comprised of the pieces and parts of our experience –both those celebrated and those survived.  The mosaic work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Peter Vial speaks to that patchwork in such a visual way.  This work is so relatable, even though some of it is incredibly large.  I bristle at the ubiquitous Nietzsche what-doesn’t-kill-you quote because it typically comes across as condescension or gaslighting, but Vial’s sculpture is a celebration of life, regardless of circumstance. There IS a difference, and I appreciate that sort of optimistic realism.  No unicorns & rainbows.  Thanks, Peter.

more than ORANGE JUICE

Have I told you I was born in Florida? We lived there of and on until I was 5 years old.  My most distinct food memories are from Florida.  I remember accidentally dumping spaghetti on my dad’s lap because I forgot to brace the drop leaf table.  I remember loving hot dogs from Dixie’s in Treasure Island and momentarily believing I was abandoned because the line had moved and I hadn’t.  Spaghetti and hot dogs. Expand your range of Florida experiences with the next Call.  You won’t regret it.

Winter is the season of indulgent foods.  Comfort foods have changed for me over the years, but they still tend to be slow-cooked, hearty fare. My favorite indulgences are french onion soup with fresh parmigiana, Swiss steak over pureed potatoes, masala laden with cauliflower & chickpeas or black-bean chili with a squeeze of lime.  And don’t forget the gulab jamun.  Luckily winter comes but once a year –much like this next Call.  Indulge…

I acquire things in threes & fives.  I’m partial to the odd, regardless of the source.  My mother likes the evens.  I have three wasabi turtles; she has a favorite pair of berry bowls.  I have five sets of chopsticks; she has pair of porcelain egg cups.  My collecting has been purposefully curbed due to a conscious decision to own less, but “three” is still a set for me.  This next Call offers a $300 prize & the possibility of becoming part of collection.  This one is quarterly…

My favorite culinary masterpieces are created from the random remains of my refrigerator or pantry.  This is how lunch comes to be almost every day.  Left over veggies from salad or stir fry end up as spring rolls; emergency canned goods create the best vegetable soup.  Because I live in a more rural location, bad weather & poor grocery planning can result in a hungry household.  But a little creativity amongst the ruinous remains, turns out the most delightful surprises.  This next Call wants to see what you creat from what remains.  Take a look…
