Drawn to small format, she began accumulating awards. She prefers urban landscapes & still life with a Trompe L’Oeil & photo-realism influence. Keirce paints, “colors & shapes with little or no regard to the entire subject until the very end of the painting process. One of the joys of painting is being surprised by the hyper realistic compositions that evolve from a very abstract, emotional creative zone.”

I write a whole lot of crap about food. Most of it is just an off the cuff note about whatever is going on in my kitchen. But it is NEVER meant as a judgment about the way YOU eat. One of FB friends updated her status yesterday with a comment about how people who eat cheese, fruit and veggies cold, as opposed to room temp, have clearly given up on life and are just eating garbage. Really? I am sorry my cold strawberry has flagged me as a useless garbage eater. So, I want to be clear. No judgement from me. Do I want you to eat creme-filled snack cakes? Art via Post is a project that brings together international artists of all ages and types who send art in the form of mail. The envelope or package becomes the art itself. The envelope is the canvas. Some artists incorporate the mailing address and stamp in their work, others use the blank side as their work space. Medium types include Illustrators, calligraphers, paper artists, graffiti artists and stencilers among others. Anything goes. The message is up to the sender.

McDonald’s is peddling a pumpkin spice latte and every grocery store, roadside stand and farmers’ market is showcasing a plethora of pumpkins and gourds from the green and gnarly to the perfectly carrot-color orbs from which a million jack-o-lanterns will be carved. JUROR: Greg Scheibel has always felt a strong connection to the outdoors. Throughout his life he has spent a great deal of time hiking, fishing, backpacking, and closely observing his surroundings, which has led to a deep appreciation for the remote locations and unspoiled beauty of the West, which is the main inspiration for his paintings. Greg paints on location as much as possible, trying to capture an honest record of the values, color, and feel of an area. The emotional connection to nature which is the result of these field studies, is the foundation for all of his work.

Years of drawing, pouring over art books, collecting and studying paintings of artists he admired, and a general accumulation of life’s experiences contribute to what he puts into his paintings. Although still relatively new to the professional art world, he began selling his work in 2005 and became a full time artist in 2007, he shows his work in some of the West’s finest Galleries and has been invited or juried into a number of prestigious shows. He has received several awards for his work, and scholarships from the Scottsdale Artists School, an Award of Excellence from the OPA on 3 occasions, and was recently awarded Signature Membership in that organization. He has been listed as an ‘Artist to Watch’ in Southwest Art Magazine, and featured in Western Art Collector.

AWARDS: $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $500 for third place along with 10 honorable mentions

MEDIA: 3-D work designed to fit within the confines of a typical shoebox. Each applicant is free to use a shoebox of choice, from baby-size shoes to boots, as the dimensions of their work. Your shoebox must be used to encase and accompany the shipment of each work selected. It must have been commercially produced and feature the brand of shoe originally contained. For maximum protection selected work should be placed in shoebox and double boxed for shipment. Empty shoeboxes will be used for promotional purposes and returned with work at close of exhibit. Artist’s Shoebox is intended only as a size guide, not for incorporation into work.

French was also recognized as a 2010 Distinguished Alumna by Boston University, and named one of Ten to Watch in 2011 by the Worcester Business Journal. Under her direction, the Danforth Museum of Art has been named an Outstanding Cultural Organization by the Massachusetts Arts Education Collaborative.

Her work is in the permanent collection of Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City and The New York Public Library.

AWARDS: 1st Prize: Solo Show in 2015 at WMG; 2nd prize: $500; 3rd prize: $250; and 4th prize: Honorable Mention

Faces

An enduring fascination with the photographic portrait.

Each portrait reveals something of the sitter, the photographer and also of us as viewers. No one image can muster a whole and complete being, no matter how much we believe this could be so. This is the part of the photograph we create in our imagination, we fill in each crack and hole with a sort of personalized reasoning. And all these unknowns in the midst of true transparency.

Eye contact is made or retracted, body language boastful, reticent or indecipherable. Facial expressions can be hard at work or numbly slack. While subjects have a power over these photographic outcomes, it is the choice of the photographer to coax or mute said expressions for their artistic offering.

Submit work depicting people, selves, faces. People that baffle us with their complexities, personalities or simplistic nature. Make us question how this person existed at this particular place and time.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Elizabeth Avedon has forged her own path in the photography industry, collaborating with museums, publishing houses, galleries and artists. The former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe and Creative Director for The Gere Foundation, she has received awards and recognition for her exhibition design and publishing projects, including the retrospective exhibition and book: Avedon: 1949–1979 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; and Richard Avedon: In the American West for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. Elizabeth is a regular contributor to the Life.com award-winning Le Journal de la Photographie, profiling notable leaders in the world of Photography.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes.
