CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Digital Art

I get a lot of email, queries and facebook comments as to the legitimacy of the calls I post. And, while I understand that one rotten apple can spoil the barrel. Rest assured, I make every effort to sniff out the bad apples. To my knowledge, I have never post a fraudulent or scam call. Let me know if I ever do.

On that note, I am always hesitant to post calls for online exhibitions because they tend to strike my readers as a way to lose their cash for little benefit in return. However I must say, I am a big fan of art organizations that lay it all out there. Take today’s call for example.

The Austin Museum of Digital Art says, “Since AMODA currently has no permanent exhibition space, there are some types of visual art that are more practical for us to present than others. In particular, we are seeking artwork to display in our Digital Showcase Series. The Digital Showcase is a one night only event featuring live electronic music and visual art in a social setting, such as a bar or nightclub.” I get it, and I appreciate the fact that the call isn’t hidden in some vague archaic language.

Austin is known for its innovative art vision, and I love the idea of bringing art to the public instead of coercing the public to come see art. Here’s the call:

VISUAL ART

The Austin Museum of Digital Art is open to receiving a wide range of visual art submissions, including anything that they would define as digital art. Please see their About Digital Art page for more information.

The forms of art that work well in these events are video art, computer animation, digital prints, performance pieces, live video, multimedia installations, and interactive pieces. Examples of your work:

when you send a submission, please include examples of your art, music, etc.
they strongly prefer a link to a website where we can view or listen to examples of your work
if this is not possible, you may also attach images, audio files, or short video files to your email

Short bio and work description:

it would be helpful to include a short bio and description of your work
this may include your history as an artist, where your work has previously been shown, where you have previously performed, etc.
it may also include details on the concept/subject of your work, and any special display considerations
they prefer a link to a website where they can read this information, but you may also include it in the body of your email, or as an attachment

Submission replies:

they make every effort to read and catalog all submissions, and consider them for future events
however, AMODA is an all-volunteer organization and cannot guarantee a reply to every submission
even if you do not receive a reply, please feel free to send additional submissions in the future, as you create new work (this is an exception to most gallery rules)

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Group Show

Here’s another tasty morsel for those of you looking for a show. For the price of a sit down lunch ($10), you can enter up to five pieces.

Founded in 2009, the Adam Lister Gallery provides the community with contemporary art exhibitions, educational programs, and a variety of art related activities and events. The gallery is currently located in the heart of the City of Fairfax, Virginia. With a focus on creating opportunities for emerging artists, they aim to give local, national, and international artists exposure in the Northern Virginia area.

addition to their rotating exhibition program, there is a wide selection of studio art classes and workshops available for all ages. They have created a dynamic and inventive environment in which visitors can see, learn about, and experience the endless possibilities surrounding visual art. Their goal is to become a vital cultural resource that is accessible to the entire community.

The Adam Lister Gallery believes that fostering the creative impulses of people will provide an outlet for imagination and open mindedness. They look to offer the viewing public the chance to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the visual arts. The gallery is located in the front section of The SPACE. The SPACE is a new visual and performing arts center located in Fairfax City, Virginia. Founded by Joanna Ormesher, the SPACE provides a mix of music, theater, performance, and visual arts events, working with both local and international art groups and organizations.

CALL FOR ARTIST SUBMISSIONS

This is an international open call for artwork to be exhibited in the upcoming summer group show in the Adam Lister Gallery. This exhibition will run from June 4 through July 18, 2010.

This open call will be juried by the gallery board of directors and gallery staff. All artists that are selected will be featured in a six week show in the gallery.

The Adam Lister Gallery is located in the center of Fairfax City, and offers a high level of visibility for artists to display their work. They have been recognized as the premier contemporary art gallery in the Northern Virginia area. Working closely with collectors and curators, their goal is to provide an art exhibition space for both established and emerging artists.

For this open call they are looking for art done in any medium. Drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, photography, installation, and anything else you work with is acceptable. There are no restrictions regarding subject matter or size (though it must be able to fit through our door 70″x82″). Artists of any age and background are encouraged to submit their work. They are looking for unique and interesting approaches to the idea of art making.

GUIDELINES FOR ENTRY:

1. Send up to 5 JPEG images of your artwork
2. JPEG images should be no higher than 72 dpi (72 pixels/inch)
3. Images should be no higher than 1024 pixels on the longest side
4. Include list of titles, medium, dates, and sizes for each image
5. This open call is for individuals as well as groups and collectives
6. For installation and site-specific projects you may submit proposal images.
7. Entry fee of $10, for up to 5 images.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Without A Map

The theme of the week seems to be “Eat Out” or at least “Show Out(side)” of your neighborhood. Here is a great show in the North Suburbs of Chicago that is juried from an International pool of artists.

There is a $35 entry fee; however, the Northbrook Public Library (sponsor of the show) does not take a commission on sales. Woo hoo!

I frequently expound the virtues of showing in more academic and/or public venues like universities and libraries. These are opportunities for you to show in a respected space and often find a different audience. Give it a try. Here’s the call:

The Northbrook Public Library is seeking entries for its 8th annual international juried art show, “Without a Map,” to be held October 1 through November 15, 2010. A gala opening reception will be held October 1.

Artists 18 years and older, working in all 2-D and 3-D art media, are invited to submit digital entries. The exhibition is limited to original artwork created within two years of the entry date.

Artists should consider the theme, “Without a Map,” as embodying free-spiritedness, exploration, independence and an inherent desire to attain a goal.

The exhibit is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages.

Prizes include a $2,000 purchase prize as well as numerous other prizes.

Entry fee is $35 for up to three submissions.

Deadline for submission is May 31, 2010.

INTERNATIONAL CALL: Russia

I repeatedly stir the pot on this blog about resume building. Getting out of the rut of eating in the same old places is no different than getting out of the rut of showing our art in the same old places. Great opportunities exist in metropolitan area across the country–and beyond.

Try it. And try it. And try it. Here is a great call from Russia for graphic design. The deadline is fast approaching. There is no entry fee, and four of the categories allow you to use work created as far back as year 2000. Go for it.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Wearable Art

Every had a yummy idea for a design that would be perfect for a comfy t-shirt? Here’s your chance. This call is not for wearable art–but for ARTWORK to be used on wearable pieces.

Finally, a wearable art competition that doesn’t require knowledge of clothing construction. And the theme? You know I love a theme. No, it isn’t food…but a “Movie Poster” theme can rock too!

Better yet? There appears to be no entry fee! Check it out!

Mark Woolley and the Anka Gallery are inviting artists to submit art for a new line of wearable art. This line of wearable art may include hoodies, t-shirts, jackets, shoes, ties, scarfs, skirts, etc.

The winning art and pieces by selected finalists will be exhibited in April at the Anka Gallery. The winning artist will receive 20% of net revenue derived from sales of wearable art utilizing the artists work. The winning artist will be interviewed on a live webcast provided by unitedArtscene.

THE CALL: Artists are asked to submit art based on the provided theme. Media can include painting, drawing, photographically based work, mixed media, and prints.

Submissions may not include content and images which have questionable copyright or trademark issues–i.e. existing commercial logos, copyrighted images, etc.

As artists, we walk often walk the line between creating a commercial niche for ourselves (so that we can eat) and doing the work the work we love (so we can sleep).

Portraiture is often a tough sit-down menu to sell to the average fast food consumer, but there are artists that do it so well…even the pickiest amongst us can’t resist. Here is an opportunity for the artist that just can’t resist a beautifully rendered portrait.

Still Point Art Gallery invites submissions for its upcoming online exhibition: American Portraits: Diversity in Our Land.

Great achievements are not born from a single vision but from the combination of many distinctive viewpoints. Diversity challenges assumptions, opens minds, and unlocks our potential to solve any problems we may face. –Unknown

This exhibition will celebrate diversity in America through the genre of portraiture. Artists are encouraged to think about diversity in America in its broadest sense – ethnicity, race, age, class, religion, and gender…also occupation, national or regional origin, hobbies and interests, regional customs and lifestyles, and more…much more.

To add to the celebratory nature of this exhibition, the Gallery is looking into a variety of opportunities that will put this show before the public. In other words, the Gallery is looking into ways to turn this show into public art. To begin with, the Gallery will assist artists whose work is accepted for the exhibition in getting their work displayed in their local libraries, city or town office buildings, or community centers as part of what could be a national public art exhibition. Other opportunities will be posted as they become finalized. We welcome ideas for making this exhibition a public art exhibition.

Eligibility

Open to artists 18 years of age or older from around the world who submit portraiture in any medium except video and wearable art. Submissions must be the creation of the artist. Reproductions of original artwork are not accepted.

Images

Artists may choose one of three ways to submit images: (1) artists may upload images using their online form; (2) artists may send images by email [very quick and easy and you can still pay online]; or (3) artists may send images on a CD. Slides and prints will not be accepted.

Whatever way you choose, images should be saved in jpg format and resized to 72 dpi, less than 1.5 MB, with the maximum dimension of the image being no more (and not much less) than 1000 pixels. Failing to resize your image will result in problems with uploading. The file name of your image should follow this convention – last name, title of work (perhaps abbreviated), and number (matching entry form number) [for example, SMITH_SUNNYDAY_3.jpg].

Do not include stray characters such as # or * in your file name. Doing so will prevent your file from uploading properly. If you choose to email images, please send them to director@stillpointartgallery.com.

If you choose to send your images on a CD, please mail to Still Point Art Gallery, 193 Hillside Road, Brunswick, Maine 04011. CDs will not be returned. Once the submission deadline has passed, no image substitutions may be made.

Please Note: If you use Safari on a Mac platform, their online form will NOT work to upload your images. If you use a Mac, please use Firefox to upload your images.

Entry Application and Fee

Artists are asked to complete an entry form and submit a non-refundable fee of $25 for up to 3 images. Additional images may be submitted for a fee of $5 each, up to a maximum of 8 images at $50. ($25 for 3 images plus $25 for an additional 5 images to reach the maximum of 8 images at $50) If you complete the entry form and submit your images online, payment may be made online by PayPal immediately following submission of images. If you submit images by email, you should include the following information about each image in the message: title, medium, dimensions, framed/unframed, and price. Please also include your name, address, and home or cell number.

Payment may be made by requesting a PayPal invoice or by check or money order. If you submit images on CD, please include the entry form. Again, payment may be made by requesting a PayPal invoice or by check or money order. Write checks payable to Still Point Art Gallery and mail to 193 Hillside Road, Brunswick ME 04011. Once the submission deadline has passed, no changes in prices as stated on the entry form will be made.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Printmaking

I want you to know that I am listening.

By examining the statistics for Art & Art Deadlines.com (AAAD), I have realized that you don’t seem to care for long lists of deadlines broken up by month. Guess what? I don’t like posting them either.

Instead, the hits on this site seem to indicate that you like being able to search by deadline month and year, but you prefer being given a show or two at a time.

I am excited about this revelation. I love being able to offer you shows as I trip across them instead of huge lists. The result–you’ll get more posts, and I feel less pressure. Wonderful!

Here is a great opportunity for female artists from the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago.

Woman Made Gallery is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization founded in 1992. Its goal is to support women in the arts by providing opportunities, awareness and advocacy. It specifically accomplishes this through exhibitions which raise public awareness and recognition of women’s cultural contributions.

From 1992 through 2010 WMG has programmed 163 group shows, 104 invitational/solo shows, 36 Artisan Gallery exhibitions, and eight off-site shows. More than 6500 women artists have exhibited their work since WMG was established.

You know how I love a theme, and WMG always provides one. This call has a looming deadline, but you can enter online making it much more convenient for all those procrastinators out there. Here’s the call, in brief. Follow the link for the prospectus.

Debora Wood is senior curator at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, where she takes the leading role in developing the Museum’s exhibitions and collections. Wood has a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is author of the exhibition catalogues for Imaging by Numbers (2008) and Marion Mahony Griffin (2005), and contributing author to catalogue Paths to the Press: Printmaking and American Women Artists, 1910–1960 (2006).

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 6×6 in New York

Happy March! Thank you for your patience during my short hiatus. I am back and will return to regular posting during the next 2 weeks.

In the meantime, I received this call today and thought it was a perfect opportunity for those of you ust starting to build a resume–The 3rd Annual 6x6x2010 is a brilliant fundraiser in benefit of the Rochester Contemporary Art Center.

The rules are pretty simple:

You send up to 10 pieces of work sized 6″ x 6″ x no more than 1/4″ deep signed only on the back, and they will be exhibited at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center and sold at $20 each.

No hanging hardware necessary–they use push pins.

Why participate?

1. It is an “all hung” show so you won’t receive a rejection letter.

2. You can add a NY Show to your resume.

3. You get a chance to support the arts while possibly picking up a collector or two.

6x6x2010 is the third exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths and YOU. Each artwork will be 6×6 inches square and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously.

All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each, to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Artists’ names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all artworks will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. Don’t miss Rochester’s largest exhibition and don’t miss the chance to show your artwork in great company and support of Rochester’s downtown contemporary art venue.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY: Norwegian Competition

Sometimes I get to a post via a bizarre and random thought process, but that process can often be just the recipe for a great post.

Today, I was thinking about food–shocking, I know.

I was wondering what to have for dinner and thought salmon sounded good. Salmon makes me think of Norway. Norway sparked the memory of having seen a Call or Announcement or Email of some sort with Norway in the subject line.

And so I rummaged through the files until voila…I think salmon…you get a Competition for the Stavanger Region’s New Concert Hall (in Norway). Enjoy! And don’t forget to drop me a line if you decide to participate in the competition…looks like a great opportunity for a large scale installation!

Solo artists and collaborating groups are invited to take part in this international pre-qualifying round for a lighting project in the New Concert Hall in Stavanger, to be completed in 2012. Please note the postmark deadline is March 6, 2010.

Stavanger New Concert Hall will be of a high international standard, and be centrally situated, close to other cultural institutions and two new music schools in the Bjergsted Park area of the city.

The building is specially designed for musical events, but will also accommodate many other kinds of event for large and small audiences both in the two performance halls inside, and immediately outside in the large amphitheatre.

Through this pre-qualification, the Art Committee is seeking candidates to take part in a limited competition for a significant indoor art project, where light is an important premise. The defined space is in the center of the building; in section, starting on the ground floor outside the Multipurpose Hall, it opens up, traversing five floors.

This part of the Concert Hall has large glass facades on two sides and a selection of materials that contribute to erasing the division between exterior and interior spaces. This openness is important: the art work will be visible from far away and therefore represent the Hall, as well as being a significant element in the whole entrance area and amphitheatre.

Inside, the art project should be a distinctive feature and contribute favourably to the visitor’s impression upon entering this large public space. It is here that the public will best experience the interior dimensions of the Concert Hall.

It is also where audiences will congregate as they progress up and down the stairs. A work of art for this location must have a distinctive character and it must function regardless of the prevailing circumstances, including in daytime or in difficult light conditions.

The pre-qualification presentation should be a maximum of ten A4 pages (on paper, not e-mailed or on CD). The submission should include a presentation of art projects, a CV and practice and relevant experience. The Art Committee also wants to see, in brief, motivation for entering the competition and reason for interest in the project.

No ideas or sketches for this project are wanted at this stage.

ART RESIDENCY: The Wassaic Project

The holidays are over, and the new year has begun. Some of you are feeling trapped by the confines of your studios due to the weather. I have an idea for those of you that just need to get out of the proverbial kitchen. How about a 4 month residency to recharge your artistic batteries?

Fellowships are available for the full cost of The Wassaic Project, so here is the information, hope it helps get you out of the kitchen…

THE WASSAIC PROJECT ARTIST RESIDENCY
2010 Summer Season
Residency Dates: May 1st – August 31st, 2010

The Wassaic Project Residency Program has been created to cultivate and support community for emerging and professional contemporary artists. Housed in a historic re-purposed livestock auction barn, the Residency Program offers eight artists the opportunity to live and work in the heart of a rural community and offers three local artists studio space.

The Wassaic Project seeks a group of artists working in a diverse range of media who want to produce, explore, challenge, and expand on their current art making practices, while participating in a grass roots, community-based arts organization. In the final month of the residency, artists will either complete an installation or contribute work to be included in The Wassaic Project Summer Festival 2010.

STUDIOS + FACILITIES
Artists will receive an adaptable raw studio space in the historic livestock barn. All studios are roughly 300 square feet. Artists will have 24 hour access to their studio and accommodations which include a private bedroom, shared living room / study, dining room, kitchen, and bath.

Artists also have access to workshop facilities as well as the potential for expansion of workshop space. The residency’s workshop facilities will include a modest wood shop, a large format inkjet print room, and a silkscreen studio. We are working to build other workshop facilities and are open to hearing artist’s suggestions.

PROGRAMMING
Participating artists will work intensively to develop, explore, and expand on their practice, meet new peers, and have the opportunity to participate in all of 2010 Summer Programming.

Artists are required to participate in a monthly evening of conversation which will consist of artist’s talks, films, performances, and presentations in the cattle auction ring, followed by a themed round-counter dinner discussion in the luncheonette. These evenings will coincide with open-studios (also required) as well as optional artist-supported community workshops.

DATES AND DETAILS
Artists must submit their digital application by February 1st, 2010 11:59pm.

The residency includes a studio, accommodation, access to workshop facilities, and all of The Wassaic Project 2010 events. In the final month of the residency, artists will either complete an installation or contribute work to be included in The Wassaic Project Summer Festival 2010. The residency fee is a flat rate of $800 per month per resident.

Local artists who do not need living accommodations are encouraged to apply for studio-only residencies. The fee for a studio-only residency is $400 per month.

Fellowships are available and will be awarded based on demonstrated need as well as the strength of the proposal. Fellowship amounts range from $100/month to full cost.

To apply for a fellowship check the “apply for fellowship” box, and provide a short statement detailing your financial need. Artists receiving fellowships will be expected to donate between 3 – 10 hours of their time per week working for The Wassaic Project, depending on the amount of their fellowship.

Collaborative teams (willing to share a bedroom and studio) may share the cost of enrollment, however, must pay an additional impact fee of $100 per month. Residents are welcome to bring partners to The Wassaic Project Residency but must also pay the additional monthly impact fee. Pets are negotiable and will require an additional fee.

They are open to proposals for one to three month residencies, but we will give priority to four month applicants. Please include your month preferences in your application statement.

Artists must submit their digital application by February 1st, 2010 11:59pm.

Click on “Apply” link at the bottom of the Project Page. You will be directed to a digital form where you will attach your CV, up to 10 slides, personal info, and type of residency. There is a $15 application fee and the paypal confirmation number is required to complete the application.

All applications will be reviewed by The Wassaic Project directors and artists will be selected on the basis of quality of work, commitment to their practice, and ability to interact positively with the community at large.

If you are applying for a one to three month residencies, please include a note about this and your month preferences in your application statement.

Notification of Acceptance: March 1st, 2010. Accepted applicants will have two weeks to commit to attending the residency. Upon confirmation, payment is required of a $200 deposit and the first month’s fee. Starting on June 1st, the current month’s fee is due on the first of each month, till completion of the residency.

Written cancellation more than 30 days before May 1st will result in return of 50% of deposit. There are no refunds after start date of residency.
