ARTIST RESOURCE: Grants in 50 States

I get more inquiries than I can count about artists’ grants.

As you might imagine, grants for artists are not plentiful. However, I find that many artists that don’t live within 20 miles of a state’s capitol overlook one of their best chances–their state Arts Organization.

Here is a collection of Arts Organizations across the United States that give artist grants and links to their sites.

Alabama State Arts Council – The Alabama State Arts Council awards Artist Fellowships of $5,000 for Alabama artists working in crafts, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theater and the visual arts. Recipients may use funds to set aside time to create art, improve their skills, or to do what is most advantageous to enhance their artistic careers. Recipients must be residents of Alabama.

Arizona Commission on the Arts – The Arizona Commission on the Arts “Artist Projects” is a programs to support individual artists in all disciplines for project-related costs that allow the artist(s)increased time to research and develop ideas or new works.

California – San Francisco Arts Commission – The San Francisco Arts Commision awards “Individual Artist Commission” Grants of up to $10,000 to individual artists working and living in San Francisco to stimulate the creation and presentation of works of art through out the city.

California – Arts Council Silicon Valley – Up to six fellowships will be given annually to artists living in the Silicon Valley in rotating artistic categories.

California – LEF Foundation – LEF operates within two regional areas: California and New England. Thje LEF California office funds in specific areas of architecture, the environment, and social justice. Grants are made to projects which includean artistic and cultural overlay, and are primarily focused on three geographic areas: California, Hawaii and New Mexico.

Colorado Council on the Arts – Colorado Council on the Arts Artist Fellowships acknowledge artistic integrity and quality among Colorado’s artists and promote public awareness of their work. Artist Fellowship Awards are $2,000 to $18,000.

Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism – Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism Artist Fellowship program is designed to encourage the continuing artistic development of Connecticut’s finest creative artists who are seriously committed to their art form and who have a demonstrated history of professional activity in the state. Twenty to thirty-five awards are made each year in the amounts of $5,000 and $2,500. Visual artists are eligible for this program during odd numbered years.

Delaware Division of the Arts – The Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships are awarded to applicants residing in Delaware for at least one year and at least 18 years of age.

The District of Columbia Comission on Arts and Humanities – The Arts Commission offers funding for the arts in the District of Columbia. The Artist Fellowship Program offers grants to individuals in a broad range of artistic endeavors. Individual fellowships support individual artists who make significant contributions to the arts and who promote the arts in the District of Columbia through artistic excellence. Fellowship artist disciplines rotate on a biannual basis. In 2011, fellowships will be awarded in Media, Visual Arts, and Crafts.

Florida Division of Cultural Affairs – Division of Cultural Affairs for the state of Florida awards grants to individual artists.

Idaho Commission on the Arts – Idaho Commission on the Arts offers grants to individuals.

Illinois Arts Council – The Illinois Arts Council awards grants to individuals for up to $7000

Indiana Arts Commission – Indiana Arts Commission Grants support individual Indiana artists, in all disciplines, for specific project-related costs. Eligible projects are purposely left flexible to respond to the artists’ ideas, dreams, and needs, however, the goal of this program is to aid the artists’ career development.

Iowa Arts Council – Iowa Arts Council provides Major Grants(up to $10,000) and Mini Grants (up to $1,500) to individual artists working in all disciplines, to develop significant and specific projects that will be presented to or shared with the public during or after the grant period. Applicants may request up to $15,000 which must be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Kentucky Arts Council – Kentucky Arts Council offers Individual Artist Professional Development Grants, Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, and The Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship Awards.

Arts Kentucky – Arts Kentucky is a statewide membership organization for individual artists, performers, craftspeople, community and arts groups. Providing professional development opportunities, access to resources, consulting services and inclusion in a powerful arts network for people who are working to improve their communities through the arts.

Louisiana Division of the Arts – Louisiana Division of the Arts awards fellowships to individual artists.

Maine Arts Commission – The Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowships are awarded annually, one in each catagory: Visual Arts, Performing arts, and Literary Arts.

Maryland State Arts Council – Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards are grants awarded to Maryland artists through an anonymous, competitive prices to encourage and sustain their pursuit of artistic excellence. A limited number of awards of $1,000, $3,000 and $6,000 are offered each year. Different categories of the Visual Arts are awarded in alternate years.

Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowships – The Artist Grants Program provides direct assistance to Massachusetts artists, to recognize exceptional work and to support the further developments of their talents. Fellowship grants of $5,000 are offered in discipline categories which rotate according to fiscal year.

Art Serve Michigan – Art Serve Michigan is not giving out grants at this time, but has a list of other grant opportunities on this webpage.

Minnesota – Five Wings Art Council – The Five Wings Art Council is one of eleven designated Regional Arts Councils in Minnesota who provide grants and services to nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists on a regional basis. The Individual Artist Grants (up to $1,000) are designed to help strengthen an artist’s career by taking advantage of arts related, short term opportunities.

Minnesota – Jerome Foundation – The Jerome Foundation makes grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists, and contributes to the professional advancement of those artists. Open to residents of Minnesota and New York City. Individual grants are available in the visual arts, theater, literature, etc..

Minnesota State Arts Board – The Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants are a pilot programs that supports and assists artists at various stages of their careers. Grants will be awarded for career building and for the creative development of artists. Some artists may choose to request funds to create new work, but it isn’t a requirement of the program.Grants range from $2,000-$6,000.

Mississippi Arts Commission – The Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Fellowship program is focused on honoring mississippi artists who demonstrate the abilty to create exemplary work in their chosen field The agency awards fellowships up to $5,000 in several catagories each year.

Montana Arts Council – Montana Arts Council offers an Artist’s Innovations Award to honor the innovative ideas, practices and the contributions of Montana artists

Nebraska Arts Council – Nebraska Arts Council offers Artist Fellowships which provide monetary awards to Nebraska artists in various disciplines.

Nevada Arts Council – Nevada Arts Council (NAC) awards Fellowships ($5,000) and “Jackpot” Grants to individual artists in literary, performing and visual arts.

New Hampshire State Council on the Art – New Hampshire State Council on the Arts’ Artist Services Programs offer the following grants to individuals: Individual Artist Fellowships, Artist Entrepreneurial Grants, Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, and Percent for Art Purchases/Commissions Grants which fund purchases or commissions of art and craft work for state buildings.

New York – Jerome Foundation – The Jerome Foundation makes grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists, and contributes to the professional advancement of those artists. Open to residents of Minnesota and New York City. Individual grants are available in Media Arts, and for travel or study.

New York – Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council – Individual Artist Grants are available to individual artists residing in Warren or Washington County. One grant of $2500 is available for artists who reside in Washington County, and a grant of $2500 and another for $1000 are available to artists who reside in Warren County. These proposals must be for the creation of new art that will impact the community creatively or involve the community in the creative process.

New York Foundation for the Arts – New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowships awards grants of $7,000 in sixteen separate disciplines to individual originating artists in New York State. Through Artists & Audiences Exchange, each fellowship recipient performs a public service activity in collaboration with a non-profit organization located in New York State. The Foundation also offers Career Advancement Mini-Grants($100-$600).

North Dakota Council on the Arts – North Dakota Council on the Arts awards Individual Artists Fellowships in the amount of $2,500. In 2003, artists working in the visual arts/crafts and media arts will be eligible for grants.

Ohio Arts Council – The Ohio Arts Council offers several programs for individual artists.

Oregon Arts Commission – Oregon Arts Commission, due to the current state budget crisis, has temporarily suspended awarding the Individual Artist Fellowship Grant. This program may be resumed after the January 2003 election, pending approval by the voters of the State Income Tax Surcharge.

Pennsylvania Council on the Arts – Pennsylvania Council on the Arts offers funding opportunities and services for Pennsylvania artists. Opportunities include individual fellowships up to $10,000 and an annual catalogue of Fellowship Recipients.

Pennsylvania – Leeway Foundation – The Leeway Foundation was established to promote the welfare of women and benefit the arts. Awards to individual women artists are offered in a selected visual or literary discipline each year. Specific grants are available for emerging and established women artists. There is also a Window of Opportunity Grant which help artists take advantage of unique, time-limited opportunities that could significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition.

Pennsylvania – Pew Fellowships in the Arts – Pew Fellowships in the Arts awards grants of $50,000 to artists working in a wide variety of performing, visual, and literary disciplines which rotate on a four-year cycle. The primary function of the fellowships is to free artists from other activities-literally to “buy time”-so they can focus on creative development for an extended period. Up to twelve fellowships are awarded annually to artists living and working in the five-county Philadelphia area.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts – Rhode Island State Council on the Arts makes direct grants to Rhode Island artists. Grants to individuals include Fellowships and Folk Arts apprenticeships. Proposals for funding for individual artists are also considered.

South Carolina Arts Commission – South Carolina Arts Commission Fellowships recognize and award the artistic achievements of South Carolina’s exceptional individual artists. Six fellowships are awarded each year on a rotation by arts discipline. Fellowship awards are made through a highly competitive process and are based on only one criterion: artistic excellence.

South Dakota Arts Council – South Dakota Arts Council awards several different kinds of grants to individual artists. These are: Artist Grants, Artist Collaboration Grants, and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants.

Tennessee Arts Commission – The Tennessee Arts Commission offers Individual Artist Fellowships and Professional Artist Support grants.

Texas Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County – The Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County offers fellowships that are cash awards of $2,500 and $5,000 for artists who have resided in Houston for at least two full years prior to the application deadline.

Utah Arts Council – Individual Artist Grants (for Utah residents only) for up to $1,200 are available two times annually with deadlines on the 1st day of June and October. For a hard copy, please contact Tay Haines, thaines@arts.state.ut.us, (801) 236-7549.

Vermont Arts Council – The Vermont Arts Council awards Creation Project grants ($3,000), Artist Development grants($250-$1000) to individual artists, Arts Endowment Fund ($1,000-$10,000) for Vermont artists and Vermont Arts Organizations for creation, production of new work and technical assistance.

Virginia Commission on the Arts – Through the Virginia Commission on the Arts a limited number of fellowships with awards of $5,000 are available to professional creative artists living in Virginia. Specific arts disciplines will be eligible for support each year on a rotating basis, depending on the amount of state and federal funding available to the Commission.

Washington Artist Trust – Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization dedicated exclusively to supporting Washington State artists working in all creative disciplines. Grants awarded to individual artists are Grants for Artist Projects which awards up to $1,500 to artists to begin, further or complete specific works of art, and Fellowships, which are unrestricted awards of $6,500 to recognize artistic merit and continued dedication to art-making.

West Virginia Commission on the Arts – West Virginia Commission on the Arts annually awards fellowships in various categories of the visual, literary, and performing arts based on the originality, creativity, and accomplishment of previous work, as well as the level of commitment and potential for further growth. Fellowship awards are for $3500. The Commission also awards Professional Development grants to individual artists.

Wisconsin Arts Board – Wisconsin Arts Board’s Artist Fellowship Awards recognize the significant contributions of professional artists in Wisconsin. Fellowships of $8,000 are available, in odd-numbered years, to individual artists working in the Visual Arts and Media Arts.

Wyoming Arts Council – The Wyoming Arts Council awards The Individual Artist Fellowship. This is a competative program and applicants are judged on the merit of their work. The awards are given to recognize outstanding work that is already compeleted.

INSPIRATION: Grafitti

I have a lot on my mind…
change, specifically.

It is time for a little change.

On September 12th, ArtAndArtDeadlines.com will officially be one year old. And the site has survived a number of changes, I think it is time for a few more. Here are a few ideas of my own, but feel free to leave a comment with your own suggestions too:

1. New Sponsors. I am going to take a closer look at the way sponsorships work here at AAAD. I want to make sure my links are going where they will best support the art and artists that are talented and inspired.

2. A Makeover. I have been inspired by the recent Toni’s Treehouse makeover (AAAD is a sponsor) to make a few visual changes to the header and sidebars. These will be gradual, I promise.

3. Showcases. I was recently inspired by a Tweet of Catherine Roach‘s new business cards, of all things, to showcase a handful of things that some folks do really well. For example, most of the graphic designers and illustrators out there have phenomenally creative business cards. It is a networking opportunity for those featured and hopefully an inspiration for my readers.

So if you have more suggestions, let me know by leaving a comment. In the meantime, while I was contemplating what sort of art would newly reside behind the “Art” in the header, I thought of grafitti as an option. Then, like kismet, I tripped across the call for entries…inspired by grafitti. Here’s the call:

artspace announces an open call to all artists working in any medium to submit entries for Strassen Kunst, an international exhibition of work inspired by graffiti. The exhibition juror, Martin McFadden LRPS, Director and Curator, 12 12 Gallery, Richmond, Virginia, will award up to $1000 and a solo exhibition in artspace’s Helena Davis Gallery.

ELIGIBILITY International artists age 18+, working in 2D or 3D whose work consists of or is inspired by any aspect of graffiti, including painting, tagging, stenciling, etc., may submit 3 digital images of work to be considered for the exhibition. Additional images may be submitted at additional cost, for up to a total of 5 works. Work that has been previously exhibited at artspace is not eligible.

ENTRY PROCEDURE Entrants may submit ONLY digital images on CD or online. Only one digital image may be submitted for each work. Diptychs or triptychs must be on one image. Limit size of framed work to 60 inches, in either direction, and up to 65 lbs. Space limitations do not allow for installations of work. Digital files for viewing should be JPG format at 300 ppi, saved at 10-12 quality level, with the longest dimension being 1900 pixels. Label each file with the last name, first initial, and the number corresponding to the entry number (e.g. SmithJ1). Please identify images on the entry form with the title of the work.

CD, completed entry form, entry fee, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope, for the return of your CD and notification of acceptance, must be postmarked by Friday, July 9, 2010 and sent to artspace, Zero E. 4th Street, Richmond, Virginia, 23224. If no SASE is provided, notification will be sent via e-mail.

ONLINE SUBMISSIONS In the body of an e-mail include your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. In this e-mail provide information for the images you wish to submit. Attach images of the work corresponding to the information provided and send to the exhibition e-mail at artspacestreetart@gmail.com by 11:59 PM Friday, July 9, 2010. Notice of acceptance will be e-mailed.

ENTRY FEE All submissions require payment of a non-refundable entry fee of $25 for three (3) entries, which is accepted via PayPal, personal check or money order mailed to the gallery by the postmark deadline. Additional entries may be submitted at $5.00 (US) each, for up to five (5) total entries.

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION Notice of acceptance will be mailed or e-mailed Friday, July 23, 2010. Artist bios, resumes, and statements will be requested upon acceptance to show.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Strange Figurations

I love figurative work. My own work is almost exclusively figurative. Most of my favorite artists are figurative.

Here’s a great figurative show: Strange Figurations at the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY brought to you by SlowArt Productions.

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Strange Figurations. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from September 1 – 25, 2010. This exhibition is open to all interpretations of the concept, Strange Figurations. Included are all forms of unique and unusual figurative art from the realist to the surreal and visionary. All artist interpretations of the theme “Strange Figurations” will be reviewed and considered.

IMAGE PRESENTATION: Artwork submitted may be represented by prints up to 8.5″ x 11″, by digital images on CD, by 35mm slides, or by email entry.
* Prints: Prints of work may be up to 8.5″ x 11″ and may be digital (ink jet, laser etc.) or photographic prints. Artist name, title, size, media and price should be on the front or back of the print. If you want your prints returned, be sure to follow the return of materials guidelines below.
* Digital files: Digital image files may be submitted on CD, DVD or Zip discs. Images should be readable on PC platform and should be in TIF or JPG format. No files larger than 15MB please. Reference prints must be included. Reference prints may be any size individual prints up to 8.5″ x 11″ (label as for prints above) or may be a single sheet with multiple prints representing the images on the disc. If submitting a single sheet , next to each image write the artist, title, media and dimensions. If you submit digital files without reference prints, your disc may not be properly viewed.
* Online email entry: To enter via email: 1 )Type your contact and image list information requested on the entry form into your email message. 2)Attach your images to the email. 3) Email to LimnerEntry@aol.com. 4)Pay the entry fee using their Pay Pal payment page. [Digital files emailed should be in JPG format, 72dpi and no larger than 12″ in any dimension.]
* Slides: Slides should be 35mm. On each slide write the image list number and artists name, title of work, media and dimensions. Indicate top of work. Do not send glass slides, glass slides are almost always crushed in the mail.

RETURN OF MATERIALS: A self-addressed-stamped-envelope (SASE) must be included with sufficient postage for the return of submission materials. Artists outside the US who cannot obtain US stamps may add return postage cost to the entry fee at a rate of $1.00US per ounce of mail. NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 31, 2010. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Ventura California

On ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I preach the wisdom of not getting complacent…of continuing to enter shows. However…

I have been working on my show Psychomachia (see a detail of Lust: The Three Legged Man at left) for more than a year now with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, and I have worked on it to the exclusion of almost everything else.

So, I really need to take my own advice and decide that it is time that I at least enter a couple of shows…it is all about balance…apples AND Cheetos.

NO MORE EXCUSES.

It has ceased to be about cash prizes for me. It is all about the ability to show in new places. Here is one of the shows that I think that I will enter this June:

Sylvia White Juried Show–Entry Deadline June 19th

This summer, the Sylvia White Gallery will be awarding two exhibition opportunities in our gallery space in Ventura, California’s New Art City.

COMPETITION DETAILS:

Juried by: Sylvia White. Sylvia White is founder and director of Contemporary Artists’ Services. She has been advising artists on matters related to career development since 1979. Sylvia White Gallery opened in 2008 and has exhibited artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Graham, Ed Moses, Dale Chihuly and others. PRIZES: One solo exhibition and one group exhibition.

EVENT SCHEDULE:

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all U.S./Canadian resident artists at least 18 years of age. Eligible entries include paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation art and performance.

ACCEPTANCE: Accepted work may be refused if it does not conform to the image entry, at the Juror’s discretion. No substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

Artists will be responsible for delivery and return shipping of all their artwork. Sylvia White Gallery will assist in providing e-mailing lists and press contacts.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 30% of the selling price will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery. A purchaser may not remove work until the end of the exhibition.

INSURANCE: Great care will be taken with all work, but artists are responsible for insuring their own pieces if they wish. The Sylvia White Gallery will not be responsible for any loss or damage to work while on the premises or in transit to or from the gallery. Artists are advised to get their own insurance.

DELIVERY & RETURN: All work must be suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging, or installation. Graphics, prints, watercolors and pastels must be framed under Plexiglas. NO GLASS.

Shipped work must be packaged in a reusable container. NO STYROFOAM PEANUTS. A prepaid waybill for its return must be enclosed. Please make shipping arrangements through the U.S. Postal Service, DHL, FedEx, or UPS. COD returns are not acceptable. The gallery accepts no responsibility for work not retrieved on the pick-up date and will charge the artist $5.00 a day thereafter for storage. After 30 days the gallery may dispose of the work.

Back in March, I published a Call for Submissions for the 6x6x2010 Show in New York, and thanks in part to your entries, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center received 5000 entries and has sent us an update:

6x6x2010: You Asked For It – 5000 artworks from 22 countries and 43 states were entered in this huge exhibition of small art!

6x6x2010 is the third exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths and YOU.

Notable contributors include Turner Prize nominee Dexter Dalwood, Carl Chiarenza, Nathan Lyons, Sydney Licht and many more. Each artwork is 6×6 inches square and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously.

All artworks are for sale to the public for $20 each, to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center.

I live in an area with a long-standing artisan crafts tradition, and I overhear a lot of conversation about how digital and “new-fangled” media will be the end of art as we know it. As you might imagine, as a Xerographist, I couldn’t disagree more. Artist Jerry Portelli and I even went so far as to create a series of square pieces in celebration of the pixel. Black & White Photgraphy Call for Entries from the MPLS Photo Center

“Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.” – Robert Frank

What does “black and white” mean to contemporary photographers in the digital age? When Robert Frank made this observation, black-and-white film and silver prints were photography’s most commonly used materials. Nearly a half century later they are approaching “alternative media” status. Or are they? Are the implications and meanings of black and white still central to photography’s unique nature as a visual medium?

Submissions to this juried exhibition are limited only by your imagination and your photographic eye. Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscapes, documentary, conceptual – all of these genres, and others not named, are open for consideration.

Prints should take whatever form they need to in order to represent the continuum of tones, including gray tone, warm tone, cool tone, sepia, or other monochromes that comprise your photographs. Whether the initial recording was made on film or pixels is immaterial. However, in the final assessment, prints will be judged on their merits. Qualities of form, content, and relation to traditions of black-and-white printing and visualization will be sought in the pool of submissions.

About the Juror: As the founder, principal, and sole employee of re:photographica, George Slade has delved into matters related to the photographic arts for nearly thirty years. Although he started these inquiries as a photographer, his work over the past twenty years has been focused on curating, consulting, and commenting on others’ images. He was the artistic director of Minnesota Center for Photography (2003-2008) and the director of the McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program (1998-2008). His writings have been published widely; he received a 2007 award from the Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers grant program. Web sites like Flickr and Facebook, and digital imaging in general, are drawing him back into the making side of photography. On Quodlibetica, his photographs accompany Kristin Makholm’s “Five Memos on a New Museum.”

Don’t we all love to get a little something in the mail other than bills and advertising?

How many of you are familiar with “mail art”?

According to Wikipedia, Mail art is art which uses the postal system as a medium.

The term mail art can refer to an individual message, the medium through which it is sent, or an artistic genre. Mail art is also known as postal art and is sometimes referred to as Correspondence/Mail Art (CMA).

Mail artists typically exchange ephemera in the form of illustrated letters, zines, rubberstamped, decorated or illustrated envelopes, artist trading cards, postcards, artistamps, faux postage, mail-interviews, naked mail, friendship books, decos, and three-dimensional objects.

An amorphous international mail art network, involving thousands of participants in over fifty countries, evolved between the 1950s and the 1990s. It was influenced by other movements, including Dada and Fluxus.

One theme in mail art is that of commerce-free exchange; early mail art was, in part, a snub of gallery art, juried shows, and exclusivity in art. A saying in the mail art movement is “senders receive”, meaning that one must not expect mail art to be sent to oneself unless one is also actively participating in the movement.

In Honor and Memory of Judith A. Hoffberg

Judith A. Hoffberg (1934-2009) was an avid and active promoter of mail art and artists’ books.

Judith was editor and publisher of Umbrella, a newsletter devoted to all manner of art publishing and art exhibitions.

In addition to Judith’s work as a librarian, archivist, lecturer and curator, she gave unstintingly of her time and energy to promote artists through her encouragement and connections in the art world.

To participate in the exhibition, mail art submissions must be received by June 4, 2010 by postal mail or email. All art sent through the mail needs to be sent unwrapped.

All mail art included in the exhibition will be donated to the Judith A. Hoffberg Archive at the Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, with the permission of the artist.

The exhibition will be held in the Armory’s Caldwell Gallery from June 27 – August 22, 2010.

Opening reception is Saturday, June 26, 2010, from 7-9 PM.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: At Her Age

I am rapidly approaching 40, and I don’t like it.

I have alot to say about aging, but it hasn’t come out in my artwork yet. I am afraid to open that proverbial can of worms for fear of spiralling into my own narcissitic world of self-indulgent “Oh Woe is Me” work that will permanently end my ability to produce work of any sort of value aside from auto-biographical. Yep, issues. Moving on…

I have found an opportunity to say something about my aging in a project-oriented way that might help restrain my tendancy for getting carried away, and I thought you might like it too.

A.I.R. Gallery is pleased to announce CURRENTS, a timely and innovative exhibition series. Each year the CURRENTS exhibit will address an issue that warrants expanded critical attention in the art world.

A.I.R. will invite established and non-traditional curators (artists, activists, writers, poets) to select the works to be exhibited with the theme designed as a collaboration between the curator and the gallery.

This new opportunity is open to all self-identified women artists worldwide and will be curated through an open call and through invitations by the curator.

For the inaugural CURRENTS exhibit, Martha Wilson will curate, “At Her Age,” an exhibit on Women, Age and Sex.

“At Her Age” will examine how women at any period in their life, old or young, view their changing bodies.

Questions to be addressed could be:

“How does age affect experiencing one’s sexual/sensual life?”

“How age impacts one’s evolving personal and social relationships?”

While older women may be perceived by others as inconsequential or asexual, they personally experience increasing knowledge of themselves.

Younger women may experience curiosity/fear/pleasure about the changes in their own bodies due to age.

A.I.R. Gallery is looking for artwork, to be selected by Martha Wilson, that addresses age and sex as part of an evolutionary process.

About the Curator:

Martha Wilson is an artist and Founding Director of Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. Since its inception in 1976, Franklin Furnace has presented and preserved temporal art: artists’ books and other multiples produced internationally after 1960; temporary installations; and performance art. Ms. Wilson lectures widely on the book as an art form, on performance art, and on “live art on the Internet.”

Trained in English Literature, Ms. Wilson was teaching at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design when she became fascinated by artworks created at the intersection of text and image.

In New York, she founded DISBAND, the all-girl punk band of artists who couldn’t play any instruments. Since DISBAND disbanded in 1982, she has performed in the guises of Alexander Haig, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and Tipper Gore. In the spring of 2008, she had her first solo exhibition in New York at Mitchell Algus Gallery, “Martha Wilson: Photo/Text Works, 1971-1974.”

IMAGE GUIDELINES:

DIGITAL: Submit digital images online or on CD. Jpg files only. File names should be your telephone number followed by the image number (i.e. 2122556651-1.jpg, 2122556651-2.jpg). Images should not exceed 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels or 300k in memory. All images should be oriented correctly.

VIDEO: Submit 3 minutes or less on DVD that is playable on a computer and on a DVD player. A.I.R.’s website does not accept video uploads. DVDs must be mailed or hand delivered to the gallery on or before TBD at 6pm.

NOTIFICATION DATE: July 15, 2010.

EXHIBITION DATES: The exhibit will be located in A.I.R.’s Gallery 1 space from December 1, 2010 through January 2, 2011.

FEATURED ARTIST: Shane Watt

I am very rarely surprised by artists.
It is not meant as an insult…

I often feel like I have witnessed every take on every media imaginable. Cracked every nut. But, of course, I haven’t. And, I delight every time I am taken by surprise.

Shane Watt
is a delightful surprise.

Watt considers himself a semi-fictional mapmaker. He is self-taught and based in Montreal Quebec Canada inspired most by the drawing of his father.

Watt has been exhibiting his cartographic work over the past 4 years and producing commissions for the past 7 years.

Watt uses objects, numbers, real places and photographs to create city maps, which convey stories and insights into his own personal experience of a particular time and place.

Many loyal readers know that I send a quiz, of sorts, to artists I want to feature, and the questions vary depending on my gut reaction to their work.

In fairness, I usually answer the questions first baring my own truths and embarassments.

When I asked Watt about his artistic influences, he claimed his father as his biggest inspiration. Sweet.

Then once again, he delightfully surprised me. As a second influence, Watt claims Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart). Wow, I didn’t see that one coming. On a humorous note, when Don Van Vliet was asked the same question, he answered “I just paint like I paint and that’s enough influence.” Funny.

I won’t reveal the art he finds creepy, and I’ll leave it to you to figure out his favorite snack foods…yes, I do ask. I’m a nosey foodie, and it IS a food-themed art blog.

In his upcoming exhibit at Galarie Rye in Montreal, Watt will showcase a recent collection of works including a multi-dimensional map, which can be viewed from various perspectives revealing clues of an overall narrative and an interactive puzzle map.

I think most of us can accept map making as an art form, and a few of us always think of maps as art. But in an age of GPS systems, only an artist would think of whimsical, semi-fictional maps as a specialty media. How perfect. I love a niche market.

Even more–I love the idea of something being representational, but not.

I appreciate Watt’s refusal to dumb down work to mere aesthetics but make it beautiful nonetheless. I revel in Watt’s assumption of the best in all people–curiousity, determination and the yearning to understand.

When asked if he includes puzzles and secrets in all of his work–even the commissions, he simply states, “The maps always contain at least four elements, the primary narrative, the muse, references to me and, of course, the secrets of the city. Whenever I create a commission I’m always very clear about the fact that the cities all inter-connect into the larger context of my fictitious country Loyala and need to have the four elements present….so far no one has really minded.”

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Exaggerate

I love a theme…we have taco night at my house, no kidding.

Art is no different. Give me a theme anyday. It is a great way to jumpstart your creative brain while you’re working on a full show of work. And sometimes, it can be the beginning of a whole new series of work.

I have found a GREAT SHOW for you, but you really have to hurry…the deadline is coming fast!

I LOVE the idea of the Exaggerate! show from The Arts Guild of Old Forge (NY).

Here’s the call for visual art
AND writing:

Artists lay it on thick in this open exhibit of Amazing two and three dimensional artwork, and larger-than-life written works.

The BIG idea is to exaggerate!

This is an out of proportion, overblown, not entirely accurate exhibition of photography, painting, pastel, graphics, drawing, fiber, sculpture, and ceramics as well as short written works: poetry and tall tales, all themed around the idea of exaggeration.

All work will be displayed and judged for awards. (All-hung shows are great resume builders!)

It is a chance for artists to express feelings rather than facts, and it will transport viewers beyond the bounds of reason.

“Explore our fascination with what we know is too good to be true. Exaggerate! is the greatest exhibition you will ever see!”

Visual Art

All two-dimensional artwork must be suitably framed for exhibition with hook eyes and wire attached. No alligator frame hangers.

Three-dimensional art must be complete and moveable. There are no size restrictions. It you would like the opportunity to have the work you plan to submit featured on exhibition publicity pieces please email a high quality image of your work for consideration to jpritchard@artscenteroldforge.org with the subject line: Exaggerate! Artwork.

Tall Tales & Poetry

Written submissions should not exceed 1000 words. Tall tale and poetry submissions will be integrated into the exhibition in a visual manner as well as displayed in readers copy books within the Arts Center.

Written works should be submitted twice. Electronically to be judged, as well as framed for display.

Framed Submission

Writers are welcome to be creative with how they display their words and are allowed to incorporate visual elements, although framing is the only mandatory display requirement. Framed works for display should arrive at the Arts Center/Old Forge with your entry form and entry fee.

Digital Submission

Digital submissions can be emailed or sent on a CD. If necessary they may be typed and mailed. These are for the Juror to read and select from based on each work’s literary merit. They do not need to be decorative or formatted in any particular way. The submission deadline for this copy of your writing is due April 26, 2010.

• Digital submissions should not be accompanied by entry forms and payment (although this is necessary for the framed portion of written submissions).

•Emailed entries should include “Exaggerate submission”in the subject line. Send to Linda Weal, the Exhibition Coordinator, at lweal@artscenteroldforge.org.
