Consequences: aftermath, effect, conclusion, outcome, payback, repercussion, result, fallout, reaction, spin-off, inference, distinction, importance, or significant. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote, “Everyone, sooner or later, sits down to a banquet of consequences.” Arc Gallery is looking for contemporary works that will fill its space with a smorgasbord of perspectives on this theme. Dark, humorous, quirky or twisted, interpret the theme as you like.

JUROR: Donna Seager was born in New Orleans and received her education in English and Art History at the University of Texas in Austin. She is in her 33nd year in the art business, having started in New Orleans in 1978. She went on to direct Marlborough Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston and moved to the Bay Area in 1989. She worked with Robert Green of Robert Green Fine Arts for ten years. Throughout her career, she has written articles about artists and exhibitions for various publications and juried many shows in Northern California.

In November of 2005, she opened her own gallery in San Rafael, winning Best of Marin in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She believes strongly in the role of art in refining the sensibilities of the community and that involvement in the arts enhances the quality of life for all.

AWARDS: A Juror’s Award ribbon and certificate will be awarded to three works that express the most imaginative interpretation of the “Consequences” theme. *Editor’s Question: Am I the only one tickled pink by getting an award ribbon? hehehe.

SALES: 60% will go to the artists, 40% will go to Arc.

Printmaking offers a rich menu of opportunities for experimentation, imagination and innovation. While the core techniques of the medium are centuries old, methods are constantly evolving as artists explore boundless possibilities for creative expression. Many exhibitions have toured to 2nd venues.

AWARDS: Two artists will get a joint exhibition at CAW in 2013. All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.

Just PEACHY!

Fried chicken livers remind me of Georgia. I grew up in Georgia on fried foods and my weight IS under control, my cholesterol good. Of course, it could be argued that my relatively good health is because I left Georgia at age 14, ha. There are lots of healthy, wholesome places to eat in the Peach State; my relatives’ homes just aren’t among them. I don’t think you’ll have the pleasure of scarfing down fried chicken livers at the opening for this next Georgia-based call, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you…

AWARDS: Best in Show – $1000 and the opportunity for a solo exhibit. First Merit 2-D – $500. First Merit 3-D – $500. Six Merit Awards – $200. People’s Choice Award, as voted by the visitors to the exhibition – $100.

PGLA’s mission to transform and bridge communities with public art through exhibitions is best exemplified by her work with artists such as Lita Albuquerque, JR, Bill Viola, Futura, and Nancy Buchanan. She has collaborated with TED Prize, the Torrance Art Museum, LA Art Girls, the Los Angeles Art Association, and Fallen Fruit, and Farmlab.

AWARDS: Best in Show is $1,000 and total awards are $3,000.

A WARM CHEESE DAY

Comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese. Rather, the severity of the need for comfort is defined by macaroni and cheese. A beautiful melange of swiss with a touch of pungent blue served over campanelle means I’ve had a triumphant day and comfort is a bonus. Velveeta over elbows or Stouffer’s frozen means the day has sucked, and I need flannel pjs and a frozen drink with an umbrella. Creature Comforts: is an installation and sculpture exhibition that explores the idea of the things that make us comfortable and at ease in everyday life. In modern day society many luxury items are considered a necessity and are difficult to live without.

This exhibition will explore the artist’s view on modern creature comforts, and society’s dependence on the luxuries in life, and their residual effects.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Sculpture and Installation work with the following limitations: Final measurements must be inclusive of frame, if applicable. Weight may not exceed 150 pounds. All entries must have been conceived and created by the artist submitting the work. All work selected must be ready for exhibit: 2D work must be framed with secure hanging devices; 3D work must be suitably prepared with instructions for installation. The gallery reserves the right to reject work that differs from submitted images.

Their mission is to help promote these artists and educate the community by exploring alternative venues for emerging & established artists with an emphasis on site‐specific installation art. By developing programming to correspond with the exhibitions, they provide accessible art experiences to the public by encouraging community dialogue.

CALL for ENTRIES: Oil Painting

SAUCE ME UP

My father found steak sauce personally offensive. He thought that the use of steak sauce was a not so subtle indication that his grilling skills were not up to par. “The steak is perfect as it is,” he would say at every grilling opportunity. I suppose it is a lesson learned. Sometimes a steak is a steak, and a steak should be good enough. Representational art, FOR ME, can sometimes be likened to a sauceless steak, wonderful as it is…just not my preference. I know some of you do fantastic representational work, and I have a twinge of guilt that I don’t post more shows for you. Hopefully this one will make up a little ground…

Through a Lens– Vibrant

Vibrant and vibrate have the same latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or color, or as in how alive or energetic is the given subject – literally vibrating with life. “

Through a Lens: Vibrant! gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose?

JURORS: Scott Atkinson is a large-format landscape photographer and photo editor based in Half Moon Bay, California. Sometime early in his photo career he decided to “stay home” and shoot only in California’s native habitats. He still shoots mainly with a traditional view camera and film, in both 4×5 and 8×10 formats. Audubon, The California Academy of Sciences, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Sunset, Westcliffe, and The Wilderness Society have published his work.

Photographer Michael Collopy is one of the preeminent portrait photographers of our time and has gained worldwide recognition for his commissioned portraits of hundreds of public figures. His portfolio includes portraits of world leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher and entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald, Mick Jagger, B. B. King and Luciano Pavarotti. Collopy’s photos have been published worldwide in numerous books, magazines and newspapers.

Kate Jordahl exhibits her enthusiasm and passion for the art of photography in her work. In her travels and photography, she searches for the places where the spirit of the earth and the human spirit come together. Using both film and digital capture, Kate stretches her images to beyond the expected representation to a magical and reverent imaging of the land.

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales. Nope. I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab. I love factory spaces for art. This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year. Eventually they will let me in. You wait and see…

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.
