STARCH,
please!

Newer isn’t always better.  Once upon a time, all fast-food french fries were similar to the yumminess that is McDonald’s fries.  But about a decade ago, someone (to protect the guilty, I won’t mention their names) decided that all fast food fries needed to be crispier and started add weird stuff to mashed potatoes and extruding a fry-like stick that my family calls “starch sticks.”  Luckily, the golden fries from the golden arches remain the same as always.  This next Call gives you an opportunity to prove that newer isn’t always better.

Check out this Call for Art Entries for Toyed With a low-fidelity / alternative process photo show at Open Shutter Gallery in Durango, Colorado.  Enter your photographs for $25, but be sure to make the July 8th deadline!

CALL for ENTRIES: Art of the Plains 2011

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!BEIGE NO LONGER

When people hear “American Food” they think of a homogenous buffet of beige food, but American food is a great quilt of influences from around the world.  For example, New Mexican Cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona.  One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile—in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked.  Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating.  Eat a little for me at the opening of this next show…

Check out this Call for Entries from the American Plains Artists in Las Cruces, New Mexico for Art of the Plains 2011.  All traditional media (no photography or computer generated) considered.  The entry fee is $25 (plus membership), and the deadline for digital entries is June 4th.  I have NEVER seen this many awards for one show EVER…

CALL for ENTRIES: Art of the Plains 2011

Learn more about American Plains Artists! The American Plains Artists announce a call to artists for a juried exhibition, September 8 – October 30, 2011 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Las Cruces, NM.

MEDIA:  No photography or computer generated art accepted. We have to have both the image size of the artwork itself and the outside dimensions of the frame.  The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame.  An example of that is a 24″ x 36″ artwork with a five inch frame.  Sculpture would be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds.  Artwork must represent the theme of the show: American Plains.

DEADLINE:  June 4, 2011 for digital entries.

Learn more about Juror Robert Shoofly Shufelt!NOTIFICATION:  Acceptance Letters will be mailed on or before July 2, 2011.

ENTRY FEE:  $55.00 Fee for 1-3 digital entries (includes membership of $30.00 and $25.00 entry fee). Payable to: American Plains Artists c/o Marvin Stevenson APA Treasurer, 40 Prestwick Odessa, TX 79762

JUROR: New Mexican cowboy artist Robert “SHOOFLY” Shufelt has created graphite drawings that have become an important thread in the fabric of Western Art, earning world wide recognition. His work illuminates the bare bones of an artist’s craft and portrays the physical evidence of his perception. They are celebrations of a dreamer who has allowed his dream to become reality with all its grit and honesty, yet he still finds the work endlessly nteresting and satisfying. He has an artist’s vision of cowboys as they can only be around another cowboy, unposed and unself-conscious. They are men who practice their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving it up to the rest of us to determine whether they’re working or playing. These disciples of the “cowboy way” are Shoofly’s top hands and his work is forever honored by their friendship.

ART JOB: BECA Executive Director

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!DOLLARS for DINING

I spend more money on food than I do on all of my household expenses combined.  How?  I have a day job.  It isn’t art related, but I like it and seem to be good at it.  Having a day job takes the pressure off my creative process so that I can create without sales pressure.  However, I am working on a 10-year plan that will allow me to quit my day job.  But, if I had a day job that was art-related, I might keep on working far past another ten years.  Here’s YOUR opportunity for an art job.  Take a look…

Check out this Job Opportunity from The BECA Foundation  in New Mexico for the Executive Director position.  If you’ve got to have a job outside of creating art, why not have a job that is fueled by your passion for art?  Take a chance.  The possibility of rejection is certainly worth the chance of reward…

*Editor’s Note:  I feel the need to confess that I need one of you to apply for and land this job quickly because I REALLY want it, and my family would strangle me if I suggested we move to New Mexico after having just moved my family to Tennessee a mere four years ago.

ART JOB:
BECA Executive Director

Check out the BECA Foundation online!THE BACK STORY:  In October of 2007, BECA Co-founders/Directors Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough hatched a unique experimental arts project that would give new access to exhibition opportunities to creatives without regard to their academic degree status, exhibition history, who they knew or where they were from.  It has remained the only exhibition program in the Unites States that which maintains this submission criteria while utilizing the only consistent blind curatorial review process in the world. The unique programming went one step further in that it was the first international exhibition program in the United States that which focused on created opportunities for both artists and designers alike.

Now that the difficult groundwork of BECA programming has been laid, it is time for BECA Co-Founders/Directors to pursue their other passions while remaining connected to BECA programming by serving on its developing Board of Directors.

Check out BECA online!Once the Executive Director is hired, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough will maintain a support role during the transition and eventually serve on a newly formed BECA Board of Directors.  It will not be easy to fill the shoes of the current Directors as the new Executive Director will have to wear many hats until additional staff can be hired.  In order to take BECA programming to the next level of its growth, the new Executive Director must serve as Fundraiser, PR Director, Social Media Manager, Director of Operations, Accountant, Program Director, Artist Liaison, Volunteer Coordinator and more.

DEADLINE:  There is no deadline for receipt and no immediate hiring timeline.

NUTS for YOU!

I believe that food has a sense of place.  When you eat cotton candy, don’t you think of going to the fair?  When I taste boiled peanuts (Yes, Virginia, they do exist), I am instantly transported to South Carolina.  You have associations of your own, no doubt. This Call is named Sense of Place, but it isn’t a theme.  Maybe it comes from the enormous sense of place felt even through photographs of this beautiful gallery space.  Inspired yet?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA for the 2011 National Juried Exhbition: A Sense of Place.  The entry fee is low, and once again, the juror is well-documented and happens to be a printmaker, although many media are embraced.  This looks like a winner…
