Yellow mustard is a staple of the Southern refrigerator, but it doesn’t appear in mine.  I love mustard, but the older I get the more I appreciate pungent flavors.  And well, yellow mustard doesn’t, well, cut the mustard anymore.  That’s right, folks, I’m a rebel.  You’ll only find Dijon mustard in my house. Don’t tell anyone; they’ll force me to the other side of the Mason-Dixon line if you do.  This next Call involves it’s own sort of rebellion.  Investigate…

Public.

Rebellious.

Anonymous.

Elusive.

These qualities come with the territory of Street Art.  However, a growing trend to display such artwork in gallery spaces necessarily obfuscates these seemingly essential features of the art form.

The upcoming exhibit at ARTs East New York explores a complicated question: What is left of Street Art once it’s taken off the street?  Off the Street will feature works that are more than just gallery-ready replications of artwork on the street, but are instead explorations extending the space of the “street” from the physical to the conceptual.

I just found out my stove won’t go below 225°.  I was preparing to roast chickpeas instead of drying them in my dehydrator.  But, I usually slow roast them at 200°.  Hmph.  Those 25 degrees make a difference.  You know what I mean.  Haven’t you ever split the difference when you had to bake two things at two different temperatures at the same time?  Something usually suffers.  I’ve eaten many a soggy crust pizza because of this dilemma.  Well this next Call comes from a gallery whose very name involves a melting point reference.  Intrigued?

I’m not a huge fan of buffet restaurants.  I understand why people hosting large parties prefer buffets, but I choose NOT to go to buffet restaurants because I prefer not to be surrounded by people. And, not all food should be held at the same temp.  I don’t like being part of the herd.  Luckily, this next Call is about art and not food because it is a bit like a buffet style show.  As I mentioned, sometimes it just works.  Investigate…

I have a long-standing addiction to pasta.  More accurately, I am addicted to that slightly drowsy, completely relaxed feeling I have when I finish a beautiful Italian meal.  My friends have been trying to get me to read Wheat Belly, but I’ve resisted for fear that I would end up having to give up my favorite pasta, whole wheat couscous.  I cannot bear the thought.  So, this next Call comes from San Francisco which has nothing to do with couscous, but the last time I made a Rice-A-Roni segue, I got email for weeks.  So, my stream of consciousness led me to couscous.  I know, random.  Regardless, don’t miss this next Call…

I recently reclaimed my kitchen.  Lately, the time I spend outside of my home office, art and music studios is greatly reduced, and now I handle almost ALL of the cooking again.  I’m loving it, but I have become SO territorial.  My husband can make popcorn, and it looks like someone has been killing zombies.  And why, pray tell, if the dishwasher is empty can the dirty dishes not go there instead of on the counter?  Deep breaths; I digress.  This next Call is all about Mayhem; Send them your best…

I’ve never cared for drinking water.  I know, I know.  Shame and guilt.  I drink unsweetened decaffeinated iced tea by the gallon.  But somewhere along the way I noticed a few wrinkles and sags in my face.  Shortly thereafter I tripped across an article extolling the wonders that drinking water promises for your skin.  It was hard, but I stuck with it hoping for miraculous results.  Now I regularly crave water in addition to all the tea that I still drink.  Of course, it made no noticeable difference in my skin, but it IS proof that I am not immune to the vanity that rears its ugly head as we age.  This next Call is all about skin.  I love this theme…

I talk a lot about food.  I take food for granted.  I have been in some pretty horrible financial situations over the years, but I always knew that there would be a next meal for me and my family.  Not everyone has that luxury.  So, while I blather on about the pros and cons of of reducing dairy in my diet, there ARE people in my community, and yours, that wish whether or not they have dairy was their CHOICE.  This next Call is artistic in nature, related to food, and may be one of the hardest Calls  to get you to follow through.  Please investigate…

Check out the Call to Action known as Empty Bowls.  Many of you get upset at the never ending requests that you, as an artist, receive to donate your work to some non-profit or the other.  Here’s your chance to be a part of creating an event that makes a difference in YOUR community in a way that YOU can control.  Please just take a look…
