AGAIN!

It takes great restraint not to continue food patterns in our menus.  I am guilty of taco night, pizza night, and buffalo chicken night.  I am trying to rationalize it by changing up the taco and pizza ingredients, but it is a pattern, nonetheless.  I’m not saying it si a bad thing, I just think it can lead to dangerous stall patterns that end in pre-packaged and fast food that I try to live without.  This next Call wants to know all about your patterns.   Let’s see ’em, folks…

Check out this Call to Artists for Patterns from the Linus Galleries (California). The media for this show is a cool mixture, and this could be a great opportunity. Take a look…

a day…

I have fought a lifelong battle with apples. I like Granny Smiths, but I avoid the mealiness of Red Delicious.  I like apple pie and apple butter, but I try to avoid the massive refined sugar intake.  I have a newly found love of home-dried October Black apples from our local orchard, but I am still coming to grips with the other preparations.  This next Call wants to see if you might be the apple of your own eye.  Investigate…

The self-portrait: Is it your compulsion?  Your obsession? An impulse?

Was it out of necessity (the mandatory Photo 101 exercise, a portrait for the office newsletter, or because you needed to self-promote)?  Is it the autobiographical record you decided was best told in image?

Sometimes we have to step in front of the lens – we can’t seem to communicate what we want to others, or maybe we’re just the most convenient choice for a model (the least expensive, for sure).  Even if we got there by default, there is no one better able to translate our vision to the camera than ourselves.  Perhaps you were experimenting with persona or striving for a personal perfection?  Were you desperately seeking Self?

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online! For those willing to dig deep and bare all, the self-portrait is a reward for your bravery – because whether you love it or hide it in the depths of your archives for decades, you’ve learned from it.  Whatever your intention, there is nothing closer to an authentic portrait, than to sit both behind and in front of the lens.  And whether for totally narcissistic or completely humble intents – you have to admit, it’s you.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

I have made my own uneasy peace with green living.  I would like to say it was an over whelming commitment to perserving the planet that started it all, but it was really food.  Isn’t it always with me?  I started to notice how out-of-my-control my food sources were becoming.  Pre-made sauces and pre-washed salad mixes were making me feel like I had forgotten what food really tastes like.  I began my quest to find a way to know what I was eating.  Now, I live a labor-instensive, farmers market going, whole food preparing, canning and preserving sort of life.  Is it easy? No.  Is it tasty? Absolutely.  This Call wants your earth inspired art.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2013 ECO Art Awards.  There are six categories in which anyone can enter to win cash, prizes, national and international recognition–from songwriting to video and everything in between.  The entry fee is too bad; the prizes are good … and, you might get a warm green glow around your gills!

PURPLE POTATO,
pomegranate

Produce is the every man’s gourmet food.  I will try to avoid preaching about the cost of produce being a contributing factor to the unhealthy eating habits of people world wide, but the truth is, I spend a larger percentage of my grocery budget on fresh produce than anything else, including proteins.  But if you have the desire for a gourmet treat, it doesn’t have to be thousand-dollar truffle oil or exotic sashimi-grade fish.  Try a new fruit.  The taste found in a pomegranate is not to be believed.  Substitute a purple potato in your recipe.  Buy a fresh herb plant for your kitchen window; just one will do.  This next Call wants the every man’s gourmet photo–the cell phone pic.  Investigate…

Mobile-O-graphy

Images made with mobile phones are becoming part of the photographic mainstream. Made with a phone camera, processed on the phone and even printed from the phone, these images are showing up in exhibitions both as a genre and alongside classic silver gelatin prints. Show them your latest mobile creations.

What distinguishes mobile device photography from that made with other devices? Less and Less. Possibly the fact that you can do it all on one device is unique. Sometimes the images created with mobile devices are more candid. Having a camera with us all the time lets us capture moments that can otherwise escape. Very quickly mobile phones are becoming just another type of camera taking their place alongside pin hole cameras, toy cameras, point and shoot cameras, SLR cameras etc. Here, in the gallery, we say it over and over – it’s not the camera – it’s the photographer’s vision and skill that makes a great photograph. Last year’s mobile phone photography exhibit said it. They want this year’s exhibit to prove it.

HOT!

I have a soft spot for spicy foods. I regularly tell the folks at my favorite Thai restaurant that it isn’t hot enough if my scalp isn’t glistening.  My son, on the other hand, thinks all forms of peppers are the devil.  Mild salsa is an adventure for him…for now.  This next Call wants your take on Angels and Demons, but for the record, paintings of peppers might not be the right take on demons. I am fascinated by food fads.  Remember when jalapeno poppers were the newest trend?  I always wonder what the next trend will be and how a new “cutting edge” idea becomes a part of the main stream.  We are watching organic foods slowly become the norm, and the prices of organics are shrinking.  How long until the mainstream starts seeing more value in vegetarian, or even vegan, lifestyle choices.  This next show puts cutting edge together with art for a mainstream exhibit.  Maybe this one is for you…

When I think of Canadian foods, I think maple syrup.  But, it occurred to me that I don’t have any other pre-conceived notions other than that stereotype.  So, I Google’d it.  Shockingly, an informal Facebook survey resulted in poutine being voted as Canada’s unofficial national food.  Poutine is a French Canadian dish of French fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds.
