MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers. I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations. They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon. However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs. City life means access to international food. I’m meant to live in the country. It is just the way I am wired. My town has a population of approximately 3500 people. The downside? The only thing close to international fare is Thai (which I love), Mexican, Italian & Japanese. When someone suggests a trip to Asheville (about an hour from me), I start salivating for the taste of goat skewers. JUROR: Lynda Schlosberg is a Boston-based abstract artist who creates intricate and process-oriented paintings that are constructed using a series of interwoven layers of meticulous repeating patterns of dots, dashes, and grids using highly saturated, vibrant and illusory colors. It is through her skillful utilization of color theory and pattern that she constructs spatial illusions that expand and recede simultaneously, when viewed, fully exercise the mind and the eye.

Schlosberg received her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, and her BFA from Ohio University College of Art. She is represented by Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland, ME and by Kingston Gallery in Boston. She has recently partnered with the non-profit Art in Giving. She maintains a studio in Waltham, MA.

SALES: All proceeds from art sales go to the artist. Gallery 263 acts as the liaison between the artist and any parties interested in purchasing artwork. However, they do suggest a 30% donation to the gallery from any sales made.

I never thought about what astronauts ate when I was little, but I was disturbed that all they had to drink was Tang–or so I thought, ha. Gone are the days of strictly canned or freeze-dried foods in space. Now, those travelers have fresh fruits, vegetables and even waffles and scones. But, I think being faced with irradiated meat might make me a vegetarian in short order. This next Call contemplates the entirety of the cosmos, not just the menu. Investigate!

There’s a battle brewing in my house. We live within 15 miles of two apple orchards. We only have room for a 5lb. bag of apples each week. This time of year, Crispins (green/golden apples) get my vote, while my husband seems single-mindedly obsessed with Braeburns (red apples). I don’t care what color they are, but red apples tend to be sweeter. We’ve finally taken to trading off weeks. I am queen of menu planning. Every once in a while I decide to off planning for just winging it. Well, that never lasts. Now that we are planning for a farm of our own, I am considering the idea of buying protein for the entire year from a local rancher–like a whole cow. The challenge would be to space out the protein so we are not forced to eat eggs only for the last 3 months of the year. I suspect it will end in a lessened consumption of meat, but we’ll see. JUROR: Mark Scala is the founding chief curator at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, in Nashville, TN. Scala’s most significant exhibitions have focused on the representation of the body in contemporary art. These have included Fairy Tales, Monsters, and the Genetic Imagination (2012) & Paint Made Flesh (2009). Earlier group exhibitions include Whispering Wind: Recent Chinese Photography. Scala has also organized solo exhibitions on an int’l array of emerging & mid-career artists.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $4,100 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception on April 3rd at the Emporium from 5-9 pm. Best in Show $2,000, 2nd Place $1,000, Third Place $500, two $250 Merit awards & one $100 award from Fast Frame. All awards are designated by the juror and are final. All artists accepted into the show are encouraged to attend the Awards Reception at the Emporium Art Center on April 3rd.
