Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed will demonstrate the complex and varied roles photography employs as a witness and an accomplice in seeing the world. Relating to both the genres of street photography and performance art, these images may collectively portray chance encounters, improvisations, decisive moments in the height of action, and documents of occurrences. Without premeditation, the photographer captures what arises – acting as the mediator between the photograph and events as they unfold.

JUROR: Madeline Yale is an independent curator and photography specialist based in Dubai and London. Yale holds a MA in Photographic Studies and is a PhD candidate at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London.

However, like any well-seasoned food addict, I prefer to think of myself as food-educated or food-curious, not just food-obsessed. I’m certain a psychoanalyst could figuratively feast on my many stufffed, food-related issues. Where’s the couch? We’ve all been told not to play with our food. And, none of us really understood why parents made this blanket statement. As an adult, I still don’t understand why. If my kid wants to play with his food then have to eat it while it is cold… well, those are his lumps in his potatoes, not mine. Apparently, I’m not alone in valuing the play-value of food. Take a look at a great book called Food Play by Joost Elffers and Saxton Freymann (not paid sponsors, I assure you). CALL for ENTRIES:
TOYS, Re-Invent, Re-Imagine, Re-Discover

This exhibit seeks works of art that use toys and children’s playthings as the inspiration, subject matter, and/or medium with the goal of creating playful, amusing, nostalgic, or poignant commentaries on the role of toys in our lives. Many of us hold fond memories of special toys that yielded hours of entertainment and can vividly remember when a treasured toy was lost, broken, stolen, or otherwise retired.

For these reasons and more, toys can be a powerful art medium, conjuring up both treasured and difficult memories of childhood, past friendships, and other recollections. From the utterly outrageous to the sappy and sentimental, this exhibit will include all media, small to large scale. The exhibit will be installed in the Main Gallery of the Arts Building, but a small number of outdoor works will be considered for the Sculpture Garden. The jury seeks works that are engaging, and fun, and above all, playful!

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media types are welcome; small to large scale; indoors and outdoors.

DEADLINE: August 26, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Via email on or before September 2, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot. There is a returned check fee of $25.

JUROR: Andrew Wodzianski, Professor of Art, Division of Communication, Art & Humanities, College of Southern Maryland

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Jurors will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. If possible, selection will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception. Award amounts are contingent upon sponsorship; typically there are at least three awards ranging from $250-$750 each. All award winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

CALL for PROPOSALS: Gallery 263

Gallery 263 is currently accepting applications for its Fall 2011 Curatorial Proposal Series. The full series will host six exhibitions between September 2011 and May 2012. The Series provides artists of all media and experience levels a chance to experiment with the organization and presentation of contemporary art. Three exhibitions will be selected for Fall 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists; however, at least 50% of CPS exhibitions will include local artists (from the Boston area).

MEDIA: All media will be considered

As I have mentioned on so many occasions, I love kitchen gadgets. I love everything from 1940s egg scales to the idea of a torch for carmelizing creme brulee. However, I have to admit that lately my watching too many cooking shows has me itching to use liquid nitrogen in some way or the other…I hear it is the best way to get the smoothest ice cream. This next Call is an opportunity for you to show off your technological skills.

JURORS: Peter Frank is Adjunct Senior Curator at the Riverside Art Museum. He has served as Editor of THEmagazine Los Angeles and Visions Art Quarterly and as critic for Angeleno magazine and the L.A. Weekly. Rex Bruce is the founder and director of Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. He founded the digital program at Artists Television Access (San Francisco) for which he curated exhibits and created curriculum.

AWARDS: The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44×60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery from September 8-30, 2011. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24×36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. The ten second place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within twelve months of announcement of winners.

SALES: All artwork may be offered for sale. Gallery retains 50% of all sales. Winners retain ownership of all unsold works. All artwork remains the intellectual property of the winner. Winner agrees to allow use of their images for promotional purposes only.

CALL for ENTRIES: The Original Show

Farm fresh eggs make me happy the same way daisies make others smile. The only thing close to farm fresh is a Grade AA (found in upscale restaurants and better grocery stores). Most of us eat Grade A eggs from the grocery store with flatish, lemony-yellow yolks, but a fresh egg typically has a bright golden yolk that stands tall when cracked. Years ago, when my husband owned a hot dog shop called the Dog & Cow, he used to trade left over hot dogs (used as chicken feed) for fresh eggs. The eggs had the wonderful aroma of garlic from gourmet hot dogs. We KNEW what we were eating, ha. The gallery in this Call also makes me happy with it’s sort of blatant in-your-face optimism and simplicity. Take a look…

Learn more about Flow Art Space! Flow Art Space in Minneapolis, MN announces a call to artists for The Original Show. Selected artists’ work will be showcased in a group show to be held in the gallery of Flow Art Space from October 19-30, 2011 and featured on the gallery Website.

ELIGIBILITY: All US artists at least 18 years of age, professional and amateur, are welcome to submit.

MEDIA: Eligible entries include all one-of-a-kind 2D and 3D work (no identical work can exist), including painting, fiber, mixed media, sculpture, photography, encaustic, and monoprints (sorry, no video accepted). 2D work cannot exceed 40” in height or width. 3D work cannot exceed 50” in height or 40” in diameter.

I seem to have Italian and Greek food on the brain these days. I usually write the food reference paragraph of these posts to see what the Call conjures in my mind and stomach. And, for some reason, it is Italian and Greek these days. Maybe it is the Suzukakia (Greek Meatballs) I had at Athens Restaurant in Nashville this past weekend. OPEN CALL: Grand Opera House Galleries

The Grand is actively searching for artists to exhibit their work in the 2011/12 season at one of the galleries in the beautiful, historic Opera House. Along with the opportunity to show for the month, artists will also take part in the City of Wilmington’s Art on the Town, also known as the first Friday Art Loop.

ELIGIBILITY: The body of work in the exhibition should not be work that has been previously exhibited at The Grand.

MEDIA: All 2-Dimensional media. See application.

ENTRY FEE: There is a Gallery fee of $25.00 for each application submitted.

SALES: Artists are responsible for providing a price list identifying the works by number, title, size, media and price. I am frequently asked about my favorite foods, and of course, there are too many to name. However, it would be fair to narrow it down Mediterranean food, Greek and Italian to be exact. I grew up with a jar of chow-chow frequently on the table as THE condiment of choice. For those of you not familiar with this pickled treat, Chow-chow is a pickled relish made from a combination of vegetables. Mainly green tomato, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, carrots and peas are used. Susquehanna University’s Lore Degenstein Gallery presents work by both professional and student artists in five exhibitions a year. The gallery is located in the Degenstein Campus Center. All Lore Degenstein Gallery events are free and open to the public.
