CALL for ENTRIES: Altered States

The Pocono Arts Council announces a call to photographers for a national juried photography exhibition, January 14 – February 27, 2012 at ARTSPACE Gallery in Stroudsburg, PA.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. *Editor’s Note: The Prospectus calls this exhibit a “national” show indicating that artists must reside in the US; however, it doesn’t actually address eligibility. If in doubt, email them.

MEDIA: Open to all photo-based works which have been altered at any point during the photographic process. All content and photographic media are acceptable-alternative processes, traditional black and white, and/or digital methods. Add’l artistic mediums, such as paint or found objects, are encouraged as long as the piece is photographic based.

DEADLINE: November 23, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified via email on or around December 9, 2011 only if he/she is accepted. A list of accepted artists will also be posted on their website.

ENTRY FEE: Adults pay $20 for the first 2 entries and $15 each add’l. Students pay $15 for the first 2 entries and $10 each add’l.

JUROR: Harris Fogel is an Associate Professor of Photography, and Director and Curator of the Sol Mednick Gallery and Gallery 1401 in the Media Arts Dept. at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Fogel’s photographic work is in major museum collections, and he has a long exhibition record. He has written for art and photo-related publications and projects, and has taught photo history for more than 20 years. One of his longstanding interests is placing contemporary work within a contextual framework.

AWARDS: Juror’s Choice Award: $500 cash, a feature on the PoconoArts website, and an article in its monthly newsletter following the exhibition. Curator Award: $200 cash. ARTSPACE Student Award: $100 cash.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. The ARTSPACE Gallery receives a commission of 20% of sale before taxes. All payments to artists will be in the form of a check and mailed 30 days after the close of the show.

CALL for ENTRIES: 27th Annual International

The Annual International Exhibition is a juried competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served in past years as jurors selecting works for the exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists living today. Every year 3 – 6 works are awarded a cash prize or are purchased by the Department from this exhibition. The purchase awards have made it possible for the University to build a collection of over 250 contemporary works of art from outstanding contemporary artists. This collection serves as an educational teaching resource and is exhibited in fine art teaching areas and other areas throughout the campus.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: Any two-dimensional work including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are acceptable completed within the last three (3) years.

DEADLINE: November 21, 2011

NOTIFICATION: December 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30 for 3 works

JUROR: Karl Umlauf holds a BFA from UT Austin and MFA from Cornell University. His work is inspired by structural forms of land and contains imagery from petroleum refineries, salvage yards, and steel mills. He uses color and imagery to convey rhythm, properties of tension, and physics, with his most famous works consisting of large fiberglass sculptures and cast paper formations. Karl Umlauf’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and New Orleans Museum of Art. He is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a teaching professor at Baylor University.

AWARDS: Cash and purchase awards will be made and works added to the UT Tyler Department of Art and Art History permanent collection.

JUROR: Alexandra Schwartz is the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Montclair Art Museum where she is currently organizing a series of solo exhibitions and a major traveling exhibition, New Order: Art and Politics in the 1990s (Fall 2013). She was previously the coordinator of The Museum of Modern Art’s Modern Women’s Project and curator of Mind and Matter: Alternative Abstractions, 1940 to Now at MoMA PS1.

Schwartz is the author of Ed Ruscha’s Los Angeles (MIT Press, 2010) and has contributed to various journals, anthologies and exhibition catalogues. She has taught at Columbia University and in the Education Departments at MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Harvard University

There was a time when I was scared of asparagus. No, really. My only childhood exposure to asparagus was with the canned variety–grayish green, slimy, salty, icky. I managed to go a span of TWO DECADES without eating it again. I had developed such a taste aversion that irrationally, somewhere in the back of my brain, I thought consuming it would have dire consequences. Luckily, someone served me cream of asparagus soup under the guise of cream of broccoli soup, and now I am addicted. Blanched and marinated in balsamic vinigrette then served cold…I could eat it every day. This next call seeks to explore YOUR fears. Anybody want to talk about bloody beets?

My dogs love raw potatoes. I don’t get it. They love lots of raw veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, romaine spines…and potatoes. Poignant photography of rescued dogs. This is the Rest in Show, because these animals are the best, whether they’re purebred or mutts!

This exhibition will take place at the same time as the big Eukanuba National Championship Dog Show at the Long Beach Convention Center.

These submissions must accompany a heartfelt story about the animal who is photographed as it will be posted next to the photograph – -break their hearts!

I have to admit that my Australian food experience has been lacking over the years. However, a Chef named Jason introduced me to Vegemite this Spring. Like you probably, my only previous experience with Vegemite was the Men At Work song. Traditionally, this paste made from a by-product of beer-brewing and is eaten on buttered toast. What food helps you get to sleep quickly? Well, honestly, almost any food helps me sleep because I am usually so exhausted that I can fall sleep after eating virtually anything. The idea of warm milk is pretty nauseating, and I’ve never developed a taste for hot tea, either. I have friends that swear by melatonin supplements, and a few that are addicted to over-the-counter PM drugs. Those drugs give me a hangover, and melatonin just doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t eat pine.

I enjoy the occasional Murder Mystery Dinner show, but I never want the mystery to be WHAT I am eating. I have fairly adventurous taste in food, but I still want the courtesy of knowing what I am putting in my mouth. For some reason, more than one chef has said to me, “I made it special for you, just try it.” 99% of the time they are right; however, for the occasional 1%, I have this to say to the chef, “If you had just TOLD me there were pine nuts in the wild boar dish, I could have spared you the public “ick” face when I tried it.” So there. This next Call is not really a Mystery for YOU, despite the name. Investigate for yourself…

Masters Mystery

The Masters’ Mystery Art Show (MMAS) is an international annual art event featuring over 1000 artworks by more than 500 artists from 31 countries around the globe. It includes nationally and internationally recognized artists, many brilliant emerging artists, as well as a number of celebrities from other fields. The MMAS was developed to benefit Florida International University’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Program. This event coincides with Art Basel and takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Miami Beach.

The list of contributing artists, including a host of well-established names, will be widely publicized in advance. Adding to the excitement will be the participation of renowned celebrities in different disciplines and selected local students will compliment the roster. The “mystery” is that the name of the artist for each work is kept secret during the exhibition, only to be revealed at the completion of the sale. Thus the public is invited to “play detective” as they try to identify the artist – and be the first to buy the best!

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All exhibited works will be originals in a 6” x 9” format and will sell for the fixed price of $50.

DEADLINE: Submitted artwork must be received by November 15th, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: None. This is an all-hung exhibit.

SALES: All exhibited works will sell for the fixed price of $50. By submitting your work, you are making a DONATION of your work for sale. You won’t make any cash, but you’ll get another line on your resume, and you may end up with a new collector of your work.
