SAUCE ME UP

My father found steak sauce personally offensive. He thought that the use of steak sauce was a not so subtle indication that his grilling skills were not up to par. “The steak is perfect as it is,” he would say at every grilling opportunity. I suppose it is a lesson learned. Sometimes a steak is a steak, and a steak should be good enough. Representational art, FOR ME, can sometimes be likened to a sauceless steak, wonderful as it is…just not my preference. I know some of you do fantastic representational work, and I have a twinge of guilt that I don’t post more shows for you. Hopefully this one will make up a little ground…

Through a Lens– Vibrant

Vibrant and vibrate have the same latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or color, or as in how alive or energetic is the given subject – literally vibrating with life. “

Through a Lens: Vibrant! gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose?

JURORS: Scott Atkinson is a large-format landscape photographer and photo editor based in Half Moon Bay, California. Sometime early in his photo career he decided to “stay home” and shoot only in California’s native habitats. He still shoots mainly with a traditional view camera and film, in both 4×5 and 8×10 formats. Audubon, The California Academy of Sciences, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Sunset, Westcliffe, and The Wilderness Society have published his work.

Photographer Michael Collopy is one of the preeminent portrait photographers of our time and has gained worldwide recognition for his commissioned portraits of hundreds of public figures. His portfolio includes portraits of world leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher and entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald, Mick Jagger, B. B. King and Luciano Pavarotti. Collopy’s photos have been published worldwide in numerous books, magazines and newspapers.

Kate Jordahl exhibits her enthusiasm and passion for the art of photography in her work. In her travels and photography, she searches for the places where the spirit of the earth and the human spirit come together. Using both film and digital capture, Kate stretches her images to beyond the expected representation to a magical and reverent imaging of the land.

Check out this Open Call from the New York City Department of Transportation’s Urban Art program for their Barrier Beautification opportunity. OPEN CALL: Barrier Beautification

DOT, in collaboration with New York Cares, commissions artists and designers to produce murals for concrete barriers that typically separate bicycle lanes from lanes of vehicular traffic. Hundreds of New York Cares volunteers assist the selected artists with painting their designs onto assigned barrier sites.

Each spring DOT announces an open call for Barrier Beautification proposals. Individual artists are invited to apply. DOT selects project sites and, together with New York Cares, provides all project materials. DOT oversees design and project implementation. Artists are responsible for translating their designs onto the barrier sites.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

DEADLINE: February 24, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Early March 2012

ENTRY FEE: None

JURY: A jury shall review and rank all submissions based on the following criteria: proposed design is aesthetically pleasing and appropriate for the public realm; past artwork demonstrates proficiency in design; and previous experience demonstrates ability to accomplish large-scale, team-based projects.

AWARDS: Each selected artist will be awarded an honorarium of $2,000 to complete a final design, translate the design onto the barrier and oversee the implementation process with volunteers. Additionally, each artist will receive a $500 stipend to cover the cost of materials to translate the design onto the barriers (i.e. special paper, stencils and markers). NYCDOT and NY Cares will provide materials and tools to paint the design.

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales. Nope. I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab. I love factory spaces for art. This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year. Eventually they will let me in. You wait and see…

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

Everything tastes better after 8pm, but that may account for the reality of my lifelong struggle with the size of my rear end. My husband likes to jokingly refer to me as his “vampire-honey,” but that is clearly untrue…vampires don’t eat food. But I would look cute as Countess Chocula. CALL for ENTRIES:
Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other. But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see. Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Linda Rutenbergm, a Montreal-born native, who has been a photographer for 30 years. Her MFA in Photography is from Concordia University. She’s taught photography and worked as a freelance photographer for thirty years.

Rutenbergm’s fine art work has been exhibited internationally. She has produced several series:- Urban Visions, Sacred Sites, Terre Caliente, One Island – Many Cities, Mont Royal – A World Apart, The Spiritual Landscape and is presently working on a nocturnal garden series.

Linda has become particularly known for her striking images of flowers taken at night, revealed in a series of books, starting with The Garden at Night: Private Views of Public Edens (2007),After Midnight (2008)and The English Garden at Night (2009).

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. I have had the privilege of enjoying everything from a jug band at a pig pickin’ to authentic mariachi while eating tamales on a recent trip to Cozumel. But my favorite dinner music is the humming of my lactose-intolerant 12 year old when he delights in his favorite cheesy indulgence…pizza. Studio 1666 is looking for works of art that is influenced by music. This can be interpreted many ways, and they are asking you to avoid the obvious and draw upon your imagination and push your own boundaries of what this means to you. By drawing upon senses other than vision, the idea is to convey feeling through artistic means that evoke multiple outcomes.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: This is an opportunity for a group show at gallery located just off gallery row and close by Granville Island. Studio 1666 is Vancouver’s new non-traditional gallery space, featuring current works from both established and emerging artists who are invested in confronting and responding to current trends in art. At Studio 1666, artists are invited to give voice to their expression by sharing their creativity and ideologies with the local community. Their aim is to support this partnership by providing a relaxed space that promotes progressive art with the mandate of making it accessible.
