Abstraction

Moving beyond verisimilitude abstraction frees the artist from the object. This opens the door for a vast variety of visual interpretations which indeed makes abstract art the most challenging. The artist’s facility with the materials & focus on surface makes abstraction particularly interesting today. But w/o personal content, symbolism or “event”, it risks becoming conceptually mundane & void of meaning.

JUROR: Tobin Keller is an artist and educator who works and teaches in Northern California. His artwork is very much influenced by the community & natural beauty which surrounds him. He currently instructs courses at Mendocino College in Ukiah & works as a freelance illustrator & muralist.

Chia seeds are fascinating. I have started using them to make raw, small-batch refrigerator jam from overripe fruit. Yum. The seeds are hydrophilic, absorbing up to 12 times their weight in liquid when soaked. While soaking, the seeds develop a mucilaginous gel-like coating that gives my jam a fantastic texture. My husband is a string bean. He is six feet tall and has spent most of the past 15 years struggling to hang on to 145 lbs all while consuming every meal as though it were it last. Yes, it IS annoying. But, changes in the fat & protein content in our diet over the past year have resulted in his gaining about 10 lbs and a pant size. I’m tickled. The power of photography as document or proof is well-demonstrated. Photographic images are often crafted to exist alone, as singular facts.

At the same time, the narrative possibilities of still photography develop from the power of suggestion, the potential of the open-ended scene, the unresolved thrill of the cliff-hanger. The stories that these images suggest may or may not be factual, but their power comes from allowing the audience to bring its own sense of plot and tension to the work. We are looking as much for questions as we are for answers.

Think noir. Think sweeping epic. Think fairy tale. Think cause and effect. Think characters.

JUROR: In 2010, Gordon Stettinius founded Candela Books; to date, they have produced 3 fine art photography monographs. In 2011, Stettinius founded a fine art photography gallery dedicated to featuring the work of nationally respected photographers. Candela Books + Gallery now inhabits a renovated 3,800 square foot building in the downtown arts district of Richmond, Virginia and is one of the leading advocates for fine art photography in the mid-Atlantic region.

As a photographer, Stettinius has been exhibited nationally and internationally over the last twenty years and his work can be found in numerous private and public collections & is represented by Robin Rice Gallery in NY and Page Bond Gallery in VA.

My perspective on what makes for the perfect food shifts every few years. Occasionally I get stuck in a phase for a while. I worshiped all things spicy for 5+ years, and now I’ve been stuck on the piquant tang of goat cheese for 10+ years. Taste buds only live about 10 days, so that gives lots of opportunity for a change of taste. This next Call wants a female perspective, but not necessarily on food (although it isn’t excepted). Rousseaux states: “Rather than representing anything specific, I use color to suggest images, emotions, and memories which are, of course, different for each viewer.”

Figuratively Speaking

While ceramics have been used for both practical and aesthetic reasons for thousands of years, the medium has experienced an amazing renaissance among artists in the past decade. Today ceramics are integrated into contemporary art. Art In Clay II: Figuratively Speaking is about figurative sculpture in clay representing a range of work from representational to abstract, traditional to experimental.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all U.S. artists 18 years+

MEDIA: Open to clay work. The artwork cannot be functional –production work and commercially manufactured pieces are not acceptable. Mixed media is acceptable as long as clay is the dominant component of the piece (at least 75%).

ENTRY FEE: $55 for up to 5 until June 16, 2014 (then $65 from 6/16 to 6/30).

DEADLINE: July 10, 2014 (extended)

NOTIFICATION: August 4, 2014

JUROR: Lilly Wei is a NY-based art critic, writer & independent curator whose focus is contemporary art. Wei has an MA in art history from Columbia University, NY. Wei contributes to many publications in the US & internationally and has written for Art in America since 1984. She is a contributing editor at ARTnews & has written numerous articles, reviews, interviews, essays and monographs on contemporary and modern artists.
