I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. AWARDS: Winning artists will be published in the next issue of Fresh Paint Magazine (December 2015). One publication provides a winning artist with two pages of A4 size (two page spread) with 3 images & bio/statement, distributed internationally in print & online.

The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. Now my cravings for hot chocolate come about through all the standard means–a chill in the air, holiday decorations, a simple sweet tooth. The work can be expressed from realism to abstraction.

JUROR: Photographer & Filter Photo Festival Executive Director, Sarah Hadley, is known for all the excellent work she is doing in Chicago, but she happens to live in Los Angeles. Hadley developed an early artistic sensibility. While in college, Sarah strayed to Venice, Italy where she fell in love with all things Venice and began her photography career. She returned to the states and finished a degree in Art History and went on to work at the National Gallery and the Library of Congress. After being inspired by Robert Frank’s retrospective, Sarah received a degree in photography at the Corcoran College of Art and went on to work for newspapers and magazines.

I haven’t been to Rhode Island in years. The Ocean State is famous for a lot of foods like the delight that is the delicate version of calamari. But, I can’t resist a couple of beverages that call Rhode Island home–frozen lemonade from Del’s® and cabinets. In 2003 Raftery received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, and in 2008 he was a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was elected to membership in the National Academy in 2009. He is currently a professor of printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design.

CURATOR: Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

AWARDS: The number of billboards will vary depending on the number of submissions received, the availability of viable billboards & current market prices for those billboards. Viable billboards mean that they exist in well-traveled (car and foot traffic) locations. All billboards will include the artist’s name. The website will have images of each selected work, the artist’s name and a link to their website.

JUROR: Sherrie Riley Hawk graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Accounting & minor degree in Art History. She opened the Riley Hawk Gallery in 1986 specializing in Glass Art. In 2004, Hawk decided to embrace all 3-dimensional art forms & opened a new gallery to exhibit ceramics, wood, fiber & art jewelry. Sherrie Gallerie has participated in nat’l exhibitions throughout the country. Hawk has been invited to jury countless museum exhibitions and art fairs. Sherrie Gallerie mounts at least 10 solo shows a year and is committed to representing the best artists in their fields.

AWARDS: All work selected by the Juror and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be included in the Cardinal Health Gallery. Artists will be invited to an Artist Reception. A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the artist whose work is selected as “Best in Show”, and two “Honorable Mention” prizes will be awarded with a cash prize of $250.
