The featured food at my house this week is Jona Gold apples ($.89/lb). Last month is was asparagus ($1.99/lb). This whole month it has been apples, partly because of our proximity to an orchard, and partly due to price. We’re heading toward Winter, and I’ll be eating $1 butternut squash for at least 2 months. OPEN CALL: 2013 Exhibitions

Flow Art Space in Minneapolis, MN announces an open call for submissions for 2013 shows. Artists will be considered for possible inclusion in group shows and/or chosen as a featured artist.

ELIGIBILITY: US artists at least 18 are welcome to submit.

I try to eat at home for most of my meals. Partly, I’m a little cheap; partly, I like to know where my food originates and what is in it. However, one of the things I most love about good restaurants is their habit of featuring seasonal or fresh finds. One of my favorite local eateries featured beautiful fragrant purple basil from a local grower in it’s caprese salads. I ate my weight in their sandwich version this past summer. The Kiernan Gallery seeks an entire documentary series for exhibition in one room of the gallery. The selected documentary work will be shown in conjunction with our upcoming show Encore: A Look at Music, though it need not be thematically related.

To continue the gallery’s mission of promoting the work of emerging photographers, The Kiernan Gallery will hold its first tri-annual call for portfolios submissions to select a featured artist.

Rare Earth

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be. Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be: macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures. They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe. With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR:

It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. The Detroit Print Exchange is the first of (hopefully many) annual juried art collaborations. Artists are invited to submit an edition of 25 prints and in turn receive a complete portfolio of 20 prints from all 20 contributing artists.

In truth, the The Detroit Print Exchange is a chance to redefine what it means to be a young emerging artist, to prove that good things really do come in small packages, and to build connections between artists working around the country.

The Challenge is to create an edition of 25 prints in response to the words “ the time we cannot meet”. Cryptic yet straight forward the words resonate with missed opportunity and honesty. Today is there truly a time when two people cannot meet? Has technology removed time from how we interact? Explore, create and redefine.

Guice has placed works in prominent private and public collections throughout the United States and abroad, including The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, The High Museum of Art, The International Center of Photography and The Williams College Museum of Art.

AWARDS: Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition. In order to be included in the online gallery or to receive an award, you must participate in the gallery exhibition.

One artist will be offered a solo exhibition at The Center.

Steampunk Originals

Steampunk Originals is a steampunk-themed comic anthology published by Arcana. Arcana has published 300+ graphic novels and 1000s of comics carried through Diamond Distribution & Barnes and Nobel.

‘Punk expresses a critical stance on society. If you lose the punk from Steampunk, you’re just blowing hot air.’ This theme poses an alternative timeline where the culture and power-sources from the 19th century persist to the modern day. Artists and story tellers are then asked to use this alternative reality to reflect and comment on our own.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. This anthology is looking for 1-12 page full color comics which explore the steampunk theme through are of all styles + media and stories of all tones + genre. Artists may choose to work independently or with a writer. (The coordinating editor will assist interested artists in finding a writer/ script to work with.)

MEDIA: Open to all visual media. This anthology series is not restricted to traditional ‘comic art’. Submit Uncompressed TIF files (6.875″ x 10.5″ @ 300 PPI) with any digital lettering layers un-flattened (if comic contains text that is not hand-lettered).

DEADLINE: January 14th, 2013

NOTIFICATION: February 11th, 2013

Only few days to the closing date of the third edition of “Take a picture & Travel”, a photography competition organized by the portal Agriturismi.it with the collaboration of the Cultural Association MoCA, created to sensitize the public to the world of the farm houses.

Almost 700 participants, between Italians and foreigners, have answered to the challenge launched by the portal, trying to win the fantastic prize: a nice stay at the Bio Room & Breakfast Cascina alle Rose in Mantua.

ELIGIBILITY: The Award is open to everyone, without any limit of age, sex, nationality or other qualification. Each author can apply with one color or black and white photo.

Richeson School of Art & Gallery, a division of Jack Richeson & Co., Inc., is proud to announce the Richeson 75 Small Works 2013. Seventy five two-dimensional works of art and several alternates will be selected to represent the finest examples of painting and drawing being produced by today’s visual artists.

ELIGIBILITY: Competition is open to all artists over age 18. All work entered must be original in concept/execution and have been created since January 1, 2011. No work done in a class, workshop or under supervision is eligible.

MEDIA Categories: Artwork IMAGE may not exceed 144 square inches (height x width). 1) Oils, Oil Pastel & Acrylic 2) Other (Soft Pastels, Drawing/Dry Media, Watercolor, Gouache, Casein, Printmaking, etc). No photography, electronic or computer generated and/or assisted or 3-D is eligible for this competition.

DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked or entered online by November 30, 2012.

NOTIFICATION: E-Mailed on or before December 17, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: $35 for one image plus $10 each additional image, maximum of 3 in each category with a maximum of 6 artworks total.

AWARDS: Best In Show – $5,000 cash. 1st Place in each category will receive a $1,000 for art materials from Jack Richeson & Co., Inc. 2nd Place Award in each category will receive a $500 for art materials from Jack Richeson & Co., Inc.

Music dictates food and scheduling in my household. As musicians ourselves, we spend a lot of time grabbing food before a gig. Too much of the wrong type of food (read Mexican), makes for unpleasant belching through most of the first set, but insufficient food (read salad) makes for a grouchy guitarist and missed chords. Show them your record collections, instruments, and portraits of musicians and fans. Show us stadium concerts, jam sessions, and street performers from distant nations. Most of all, show us what music means to you. For Encore: A Look at Music, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs of and inspired by music.

She has been a recipient of a Society of Publication Designers award every year since 2005.
