ARTIST of the DAY: Jan Huling

a happy HEART

It is time for holiday mayhem again. I want to encourage you to just say “no”.  I’m not suggesting you expect your five year old to give up gifts in lieu of a shiny red apple.  But I do want you to give up the undue pressure to make anyone’s holiday perfect, including your own.  I do want to encourage you to use your resources in support of the the people you love and what they can offer or create in this world.  Make it have heart or just say “no”. Today’s Artist of the Day Jan Huling offers the most literal example of that concept I can imagine. Enjoy. (continues below)

“My 3-dimensional collages combine found objects with surface design, sometimes touching on narrative themes. I’m also drawn to religious and political icons, inspired by a continuing fascination with indigenous or popular culture and world religions. By juxtaposing these icons with an eclectic assortment of objects, the viewer is challenged to consider common images within an altered context. ARTIST of the DAY: Eric Rhein

today is a NEW DAY.

I have experienced so much loss in my lifetime.  In the late 1980s & early 90s, I lost dozens to AIDS & a handful with HIV to suicide in the throes of gripping fear.  Beginning in the mid 1990s, the prognosis of those living with HIV+ opened up to a hopeful future as the expectation, not the exception.  Today’s Artist of the Day Eric Rhein creates intimate work that addresses the full scope of emotion surrounding diagnosis and post-diagnosis living.  And, with the approach of World AIDS Day, December 1st, AAAD is privileged to share this work with you. “Rhein’s considered and intuitive use of repurposed objects is a hallmark of his work.  The act of giving such cast-offs a new life mirrors the artist’s own spiritual path. ARTIST of the DAY: Danielle Evans

life LESSONS

I have a love for the written word, both for content AND form.  I good sign for anything–barbershop, hardware or boutique, will make my heart skip a beat.  I may have found my soul mate in today’s Artist of the Day Danielle Evans of Marmalade Bleue, whose “heartstrings are plucked by lettering”.  Did I mention that she uses mostly food?  I know… soul mates.  Plus, what better ART to pair with today’s ART DEADLINE? “Love You more than Pizza” by Artist of the Day Danielle Evans. The pizza image was carved blindly without stencil, using 4 mediums, eventually executing the final on a extra large, 16″ diameter pie.

“As a kid, I loved making Valentines and dropping them in my classmates’ handmade holiday boxes with a piece of candy. This year I realized Instagram had adopted a direct message box requiring a private image to start a discussion which reminded me of this nostalgic practice. I set to work on the theme ‘Love You More Than…’ and sent over 250 private message Valentines with personal notes to the recipients.  I pulled every pun, sparing no dad joke. This was about more than love.” –Danielle Evans

“The summer series of crates were my first attempt at abstract painting on a 3-dimensional form using the desaturation scale. The entire palette was created from the combination of two complementary colors (yellow-green and purple) that when combined form a neutral grey. The colors matched the rainy summer days of the mountains perfectly, and the abstract lines mimic the horizontal landscape lines.” –Laura Sellers

on the road, again

I spend a lot of time on the road, and the work of Grant Haffner, our current Artist of the Day, serves as a great reminder to stop, take a breath and SEE. I am a huge fan of color field work, and this intersection of color field with a dash of Fauvism and huge dollop of the living landscape is stunning–nectareous, even, to this weary traveler. CALL for ENTRIES: Infected 4

LEMONY

I ran across Buddha’s finger a couple of years ago.  What a bizarre, other-worldly looking fruit.  It is a type of citron and has the aroma of a lemon.  It makes great candied peel and is fantastic for flavoring vodka, or infusing oil or sugar.  The best part is that the pith doesn’t have the bitter taste that is commonly in the white of the lemon.  I would love to have a keep just for ornamental reasons since fruit tends to last longer “on the vine” than flowers do.  The fruit of this tree just doesn’t look real.  The next Call wants just the opposite–subject matter that appears real but is not.  This is a science fiction lovers dream…

MEDIA: Open to work of imaginative realism, i.e. science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.  The categories include: Oil/acrylic, pen/ink,digital/photoshop, & other work that can be represented by a 2-D image.

NOTIFICATION:  January 2016

ENTRY FEE: $10 each image, limit 10.  Images 5 & 10 are free.

JUROR:  The Jury Panel is comprised of four individuals personally entrenched in the creation, sales or promotion of imaginative realism artworks; Erica Berkowitz, Patrick Jones, Lauren Panepinto & Allen Williams.

I’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms.  Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family.  So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself.  Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions.  But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies. BLACK TRUFFLE

What happens when food imitates visual art? At Art Basel Hong Kong in 2015, that question was answered by 10 stellar chefs.  The image to the left is L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon combination of French sea bass, seasonal black truffle, celery mousse line & Malabar pepper sauce to recreate Zao Wou-ki’s dark abstract work.   This dish, and at least 9 others in this vein, were available at restaurants in the Hong Kong area back in March.  I can’t know how tasty it was, but, my oh my, how beautiful.  This next Call wants your surreal work, but not the culinary version.  What was it Benjamin Franklin said? ““Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.“  This exhibit is longer than 3 days, so hold the fish…

JUROR:  Elizabeth McGrath has always had an eye for the strange beauty in the grotesqueries of life, an appreciation nowhere more evident than in her own work. Inspired by the relationship between the natural world and the detritus of consumer culture, she brings forth a new cavalcade of creatures from the darker corners of the streets, the city and the imagination. Her work has been exhibited at Sloan Fine Art, IguaPop, Billy Shire Fine Arts, Stychnin & La Luz de Jesus as well as in Berlin, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo, London & across 13 states.
