This year’s juror show theme centers around the well known 1916 poem by Robert Frost entitled The Road Not Taken. Poetry and the visual arts can have the similar ability to evoke thought, reflection, and emotion. This year’s theme, The Road Not Taken can be explored as a whole or focused on a certain phrase or aspect of the poem by the artist.

Who is left behind when one goes down one path and not the other? What do we sacrifice for taking the road less traveled? The poem is to be interpreted by the individual artist.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 3 images

JUROR: Chris Amend is a Wyoming native, born in Southwest Wyoming and raised in Worland, WY. He attended the University of Wyoming, earning a BFA and an MFA in art. After a brief teaching position at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, he returned to Wyoming. Amend settled with his family in Gillette, where he taught art for 29 years, retiring in 2007.

Amend has exhibited his work in places ranging from small Wyoming towns to New York and Paris, and has work in private collections throughout the United States. A member of the Wyoming Arts Council’s Artist Roster, he teaches classes and workshops throughout the state.

AWARDS: $500 for 1st, $300 for 2nd & $200 for 3rd

SALES: Sold artwork is subject to 30% commission. Selling art is a priority for the LAC. Art that is for sale is preferred, but it is not a requirement for show entry.

I’ve had a few jobs and a few careers. One that I loved more than most was as a Downtown Development Director. I believed in the tiny town; I believe in urban renewal in rural locations (pop. 3500). Alas, my time there was shortened to a mere 3 years. I’ve never admitted this before, but part of my impatience with the development process was my inability to attract new, exciting food opportunities. Really. Memories are often the inspiration for art. Artists give life to the characters and environments of our childhood memories, recording fragments of dreams, snippets of passing time, and experiences that have shaped our lives.

This call asks artists to explore childhood memories…the early rituals, the rites of passage, the innocence of early life experiences that celebrate the passionate world of childhood. Examples include childhood memories pertaining to a specific event or experience that has previously occurred. For example, recollection of an episode among friends or family members in a specific time (holidays), places (school), and/or and memories of the associated emotions of the event.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to all media except photography

DEADLINE: August 30, 2013

NOTIFICATION: September 23, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $45 for up to 3 entries. $35 for STAC member artists.

JUROR: Seung Lee is a Korean-American contemporary artist. He received BFA in Drawing from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland and MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Seung Lee is a Professor of Art at Long Island University, Post Campus, where he is a director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies. His paintings, drawings, and large-scale installations have been exhibited extensively in the US as well as internationally.

In 2011, Seung was awarded as “Best International Korean Artist” from Korean Art Association. Seung Lee was invited to lecture for “NY Artist Series: Seung Lee” which was part of National Art Educators Association Conference in NYC.

AWARDS: 1st Place: $200 Award of Excellence and Winner’s Exhibition Opportunity; 2nd Place: $100 Award of Merit

CALL for ENTRIES: Toy Camera Fest

I have a lot of kitchen toys, but most of them are small, manually-operated hand gadgets. Honestly, I’m not sure I could cook without a manual juice reamer or my mandolin. I usually forego the big, shiny electric appliances, but I recently gave in to a beautiful tangerine colored Cuisinart ice cream maker. It looks like a toy, but it produces masterpieces. A little kefir milk, a few raspberries and a scrape of vanilla bean is all it takes. This next Call wants to see the masterpiece you can create with a toy. Expect the unexpected. The Nave Gallery and Washington Street Art Center have in the past separately held toy camera photography shows. They are now joining together to create an international festival in Somerville, MA celebrating the quirky and creative results that happen when the photographer is forced to loosen his/her controls.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography. For the Somerville Toy Camera Fest (STCF), “toy camera” is identified as any low-end, low-tech, limited-control camera, including Holga, Diana and other Lomo products, as well as Brownies and Anscos and any pinhole cameras. Images made from Polaroid film backs attached to Holga are welcome; straight Polaroid camera pictures are not. Cell phone images are welcome.

DEADLINE: July 24, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 5 images

JUROR: Isa Leshko is a fine art photographer living in Philadelphia, PA. She has had solo exhibitions at the Corden|Potts Gallery, the Galveston Arts Center, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Houston Center for Photography, the Silver Eye Center for Photography, and the Richard Levy Gallery. Her prints are in numerous private and public collections including the Boston Public Library, the Harry Ransom Center, Haverford College, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Isa’s work is represented by the Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco, CA and the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.

It’s that time again. What would I be if I had to portray myself as food? This week I choose kefir. I am fascinated. My new gluten-free regimen had increased my dairy intake, and my son has dairy sensitivities. Enter milk kefir. Kefir is simply milk that is fermented at room temperature with kefir grains for about 24 hours. It has many wonderful health benefits, a great flavor and is also usually tolerated well by the lactose intolerant. I’ve been buying it commercially for $4 a quart, but now I’m going to make it myself. Think of it as a self-portrait…

MEDIA: Sculpture, Installation, Video, Mixed media, Found Object Assemblage, and/or non-traditional media are preferred. Larger sizes and Site specificity preferable. The exhibition space is a raw Warehouse space, 8000 square feet of open space (no columns), cement floors, 12 foot brick walls, with much a domed ceiling that begins at 17 feet high and rises to at least 25 feet high. JUROR/CURATOR: Lisa Rockford received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lisa is an Assistant Professor at Broward College, a resident artist at Sailboat Bend artist Lofts, and founding member 1310 Gallery. Lisa began curating Contemporary art exhibitions in her position as Art Services Director of the Dittmar Gallery at Northwestern University in 2000.

Lisa was awarded the Innovative Collaborative Grant through Funding Arts Broward in 2011 for her Solo show at the Art and culture Center and named as one of Gold Coast Magazine’s “40 under 40 Rising Stars.”

SALES: A 20% commission is required from sales of artwork in the exhibition.
