FALAFEL ME, PLEASE!

I love living in the Great Smoky Mountains. The weather is amazing.  The mountains have to been seen to be believed.  It is a tiny town with many of the conveniences of living in a larger suburban city.  What’s missing?  Greek food…but we have lots of Italian. Thai food…well, we have Thai food, but it is a 10 mile drive from Gatlinburg.  And… Street vendors.  Yep, street vendors.  Sometimes you just want a falafel.

It will come as no surprise that this Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called Scene on the Street conjures images of hot dogs, taco trucks, and falafel stands.  Yes, I am that obsessed with food. But I feel certain that I can trust you to take a deeper look…don’t forget Vermont Photo Space offers free framing & matting on accepted entries!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Scene on the Street

As the world becomes more paranoid about being photographed, especially “on the street” where there isn’t a chance to ask for permission first, the journalistic or documentary photographer still yearning to make candid images on the streets must be more creative, patient and sometimes deceptive.

This contest is asking the photographer to submit images that they feel capture the essence of candid street moments, with a special emphasis on images that tell a story, capture a unique moment or transcend all definitions by it’s magical quality.

JUROR: Ed Kashi is dedicated to documenting the social & political issues that define our times. Kashi’s imagery has been recognized for its compelling rendering of the human condition.

“I take on issues that stir my passions about the state of humanity and our world, and I deeply believe in the power of still images to change people’s minds. I’m driven by this fact; that the work of photojournalists and documentary photographers can have a positive impact on the world. The access people give to their lives is precious as well as imperative for this important work to get done. Their openness brings with it a tremendous sense of responsibility to tell the truth but to also honor their stories.”

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger. a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date November 26, 2010.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.
