CALL for ENTRIES: Can You See Me Now?

A trio of nationally known photographic professionals will accept a single image from up to 50 photographers and the announcement of selections will be made June 6.

It will be the responsibility of the individual photographers to supply a high resolution file of the selected image from which an exhibition print can be made. The exhibition will premier on July 29 at [Artspace] at Untitled with an opening reception and will continue through Oct 1, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Local, regional and national artists

MEDIA: Photographs made on cell phones

DEADLINE: May 15, 2011 (originally May 2, 2011)

NOTIFICATION: June 6, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Payment of the $25 entry fee (for up to 6 images) is to be made via PayPal using the link at the bottom of the Call Page. Payment of the submission fee constitutes an agreement between the photographer and [Artspace] at Untitled establishing that the photographer understands and agrees to the terms.

SUBMISSIONS: Submissions are accepted electronically only. They are to be e-mailed to: lindsay@artspaceatuntitled.org and the subject line must contain: CYSMN followed by the entrant’s name. Each entrant must submit a folder containing a minimum/maximum of (6) photographs made using a cell phone. Images should be formatted as jpeg’s and the file size of each should be 72dpi with a measurement of 720 pixels (10 inches) on the longest dimension. Images may be color profiled in sRGB, Adobe-1998, or not color-managed.

I reject very few foods, but canned asparagus is near the top of my list. Fresh asparagus is a happy, grassy, bright veggie that reminds me of spring when served ice cold after being blanched or roasted served with a little balsamic vinegar reduction. Yum. CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Social Rejection

Independent Curator, Clayton Windatt is seeking your letters of rejection for display in his new exhibition Social Rejection.

All artists have received rejections; some more frequently than others. The guilt, shame, pain and isolation that an artist feels when they receive a rejection letter can seem insurmountable. This project will empower artists that have been rejected by publicly acknowledging the hostile environment that the arts councils have created.

By exhibiting rejection letters from artists, collectives and organizations, this exhibition will address the stressful condition imposed on the artistic majority by the elite few. Artists participating in this exhibition will be conforming to non-conformity and experiencing the empowerment of embracing their worthlessness.

ELIGIBILITY: Rejection letters can be submitted by artists from all regions, disciplines and backgrounds, collectives and organizations. These letters will be adhered to the walls, ceiling and floor, to cover every surface of each exhibition space Social Rejection exhibits at. A roster of all participating artists will be presented at the rear of the exhibition venue acknowledging the participants, enabling acceptance through rejection.

DEADLINE: June 1, 2011

NOTIFICATION: All Hung Exhibit

ENTRY FEE: Participants are asked to pay a small fee ($10 payable to “Social Rejection”) to help cover costs of creating and maintaining each exhibition as well as the costs of publicizing the event. Letters must be in English or French – there is no funding for additional translation services.

CURATOR/ARTIST: Clayton Windatt is an artist, curator and outspoken advocate for artists’ rights. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Nipissing University and received his Graphic Designer certification from Canadore College. He contributes actively to several provincial and regional organizations as a writer, designer, and curator and is an active visual and media artist. Clayton’s current curatorial vision explores the unclear nature of the funding world, peer assessment committees and what constitutes acceptance.

NO LETTERS WILL BE RETURNED. If you need to retain your originals, please send photocopies.

COMMISSION: No artist fees will be paid to any participants during this exhibition. This is an act of political aggression towards the arts councils of Canada. This statement will communicate the anguish that artists experience as a result of being rejected.

CALL for ENTRIES: Modern Landscape

Dacia Gallery is seeking entries for a month-long group show by emerging artists for a Juried, Landscape Exhibition. They are looking for a wide range of styles that push the realms of the modern landscape. All artwork must have a concentration on the landscape. The artwork may be traditional landscapes, flowers in the landscape or urban cityscapes; the figure in the landscape or interior exterior artwork that features spaces with landscapes as well as abstract landscapes. The work may be plein air paintings or straight from the studio, or simply imaginary inspirations that show landscapes from the visual experience of the artist.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Acceptable media include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media.

DEADLINE: April 17, 2011

ENTRY FEE: You may submit up to 10 images for a curation fee of $25.00. Payment of the curation fee is final.

JUROR: Thomas Legaspi currently teaches Art History and studio courses in Drawing and Painting at St. John’s University in Manhattan. His primary focus is realism, landscapes and the figure. Thomas is also published by Oxford University on his treaties on Art and Culture in the West. His artwork has been exhibited in New York City, nationally and internationally at the State National Museum of Kazakhstan, and in private and corporate collections. Thomas lives and works in New York City where he has his private art studio.

I love Art-O-Mat! Art Starts at only $5!

I originally became an art gallery owner because I couldn’t afford the art I loved, and I wanted to be responsible for making at least some of the art I loved affordable. But I assure you that your friendly blogger didn’t invent the idea of affordable art. Neither did Art-O-Mat, but I love their take.

I am blogging from the road today, so, instead of posting a traditional Art Deadline for you…I thought I would just remind you of some opportunities that are ALWAYS out there for you like Art-O-Mat.

What is an Art-o-mat?
Art-o-mat machines are retired cigarette machines that have been converted to vend art. There are approx. 90 active machines in various locations throughout the country. Find an art-o-mat near you.

I do, begrudgingly, limit my consumption of lots and lots of things, from alcohol to lard and many processed foods–just not chocolate. 19th Annual International Juried Miniature Show

Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA welcomes miniature artists from across the country and around the world to enter their 19th Annual International Miniature Show, May 3 – June 5.

ELIGIBILITY: Entries are admitted to the show following strict adherence to the international definition of miniature art:

1. Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail which can be enlarged or withstand close inspection without revealing any faults.

2. A representational subject should be no larger than 1/6th of its actual size. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th or smaller than their actual size, may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art. Non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if all other factors in the definition of a miniature are met.

3. Image size not to exceed 25 square inches (161cm). Sculptures may not exceed 8 inches (20.5cm) in any dimension, including the base.

MEDIA: Photography, computer-generated art and any art that does not conform to miniature art and hanging guidelines will not be accepted. Artists may view or download the American Miniaturists’ Association Guidebook for additional information.

ENTRY FEE: US Funds Only. First entry fee is $25.00 plus $5.00 for each additional entry, up to 7 total entries. Additionally, for mailed entries there is a flat $12 handling fee for return shipment via ordinary parcel post. Shipping fees are refunded if all work is sold. Local artists who hand-carry paintings to the gallery are not required to pay the shipping fee.

JUROR: James F. Smith is currently teaching at Portland Community College, adult classes at the Walters Cultural Art Center and at Cornell Estates, as well as the Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon. He has exhibited his works in several International shows including the Cider Painters of America and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina. He has won a number of awards from the Cider Painters in past years including 2010. He has also exhibited at numerous galleries on the Oregon Coast and in the Portland, Oregon areas.

AWARDS: Jurors will award Best of Show $500, 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, PLUS Numerous Sponsor Awards.

I am not typically a food peeler. With the obvious exception of bananas, oranges and pineapple (and a few others), I don’t often peel fruits or vegetables–from cucumbers to potatoes, apples to tomatoes. That’s why I eat nectarines not peaches–no fuzz. And I long for the days before fruits showed up in our grocery stores covered in shiny coats of wax. This next call from the IEA is a far better use for wax than my apples.

CALL for ENTRIES: Consequential Fusion

Encaustic art has seen a resurgence in popularity since the 1990s with people using electric irons, hotplates and heated stylus on a variety of different surfaces including card, paper and even pottery. The iron makes producing a variety of artistic patterns elementary. However, the medium is not limited to just abstract designs, it can be used to create complex paintings, just as in other media such as oil and acrylic.

MEDIA: Two and three dimensional encaustic art. Size is limited to 24″ x 36″ for wall hung art, 24″ x 30″ x 30″ for three-dimensional pieces

I am puzzled by folks who dislike the mildest of foods like potatoes. But, I realize that taste and opinion vary from person to person. Peace is something I’ve never known anyone to dislike. While opinions vary as to how we should achieve it, everyone seems to agree that it is worth pursuing. This call is another chance to say it with art… Peace Now.

CALL for ENTRIES: Peace Now

Peace Now is an effort to show individuals how they can integrate meaningful acts of peace into their everyday activities. Peace is not just a concept that is ‘out there’ but a possibility and a way of being that exists within each of us. In fact, for true peace to reign, we all must be participants. A broad interpretation of the concept of “Peace Now” is encouraged for submissions to this show. The chosen entries will be exhibited in downtown Pozos at Gallery 6, #6 Plaza Principal, Mineral de Pozos, Guanajato Mexico with an opening reception on July 2, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: They encourage merging or established artists age 18 or older creating 2 and 3 dimensional original works from all cultures, religions, and creative walks of life, to participate, connect, share resources, and help find solutions for a better world.

MEDIA: Accepted media include drawing, painting, traditional or digital photography, mixed media, printmaking, wood, paper, enamels, glass, metalsmithing, collage, any work where the subject matter reflects the exhibition theme. Crafts, film/video, kit work, and reproductions are not accepted.

I don’t own a kitchen timer. The end result of that oversight is over-baked brownies, extra-crunchy crostini, dried-out lasagna and the more-than-occasional burned frozen pizza… not to mention the frantic run to the oven while muttering explicatives after realizing that I am too late to save tonight’s dinner. Don’t wait and then be too late to enter this next show opportunity in Los Angeles.

Chicken soup is the ideal healing food for some. I prefer what my family calls cardboard pizza and chips ‘n’ onion dip. Nope, there no sense in it, but that is my food habit when sick. I can’t tell you how many people I know that turned to art when they became desperately sick or injured. The creation of art can be cathartic, and having work available when you are sick has a way of transporting you away from your own situation. Submit work to this show to be a part of the creation and healing…

Check out this Call for Artists from the Holy Cross Hospital’s Gallery for the 2011 – 2012 Season. There is no entry fee. Commission is a 10% donation, and you can show up to 15 pieces. Art heals…

OPEN CALL: Art for Holy Cross

The community art exhibition space at Holy Cross Hospital is located in the busy concourse of the Professional and Community Education Center on the lobby level.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists, groups or organizations who live and/or are located in the aforementioned areas or whose works are of a local interest, or those that pertain to a special theme designated by the hospital. Editor’s Note: They give preference to locals, but you don’t have to be local.

MEDIA: Oil, watercolor, charcoal, acrylic, drawings, mixed media, digital graphics, and photography are acceptable forms of media. The maximum size of the work to be displayed is 32in X 40in and 30 pounds.

DEADLINE: Applications are now being accepted through May 2011 for consideration of exhibits during July 2011 through June 2012.

ENTRY FEE: No Entry Fee.

COMMISSION: There is no charge to hang work in their gallery. They ask for a 10% donation of any sales to be given to the Holy Cross Hospital. Foundation.

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating. However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato. This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art. They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all.

MEDIA: Works should be on paper. Two-Dimensional, no larger than A3 size. No more than 1 year old. Media can include drawing, collage, printmaking, painting, digital, photography and mixed media.

NOTIFICATION: Published on their website by April 25, 2011.

Editor’s Note: Yes, I am going to keep shouting about how ridiculous it is that galleries will take our money and not even bother to send acceptance and rejection emails, but I suspect we willl never win this battle.

ENTRY FEE: UK applicants pay £25 GBP (approx $40 USD). All other applicants pay £30 GBP (approx $48 USD).

SALES: The Gallery is authorized to sell artwork on behalf of the Artist during the exhibition period. Title to each artwork will remain with the Artist until the Gallery sells the Work. The Gallery will sell the Work, as agent for the Artist, at the agreed Selling Price as specified in the consignment note. The Gallery will be entitled to charge the Artist a 50% commission on the net Selling Price of any Works sold.
