CALL for ENTRIES: Unique Abstractions

Learn more about the Unique Abstractions exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!

abstractly DRINKING SPEAKING

The notion of eating healthy is an abstract one. Even putting ethical concerns aside, there are health benefits (and disadvantages) to embracing vegetarianism, veganism and even raw diets.  Sugar is the devil, but artificial sweetners are differently malicious.  An excessively fatty diet can lead to heart disease but when coupled with an near absence of carbohydrates puts the body in ketosis that effectively treats diabetes in many.  Chocolate and red wine and coffee and kale, all abstractions of a healthy diet.

In art, abstraction takes a lot of forms.  At it’s broadest, abstraction is work that is non-representational. But, that begs the question, non-representational of what?  From that we get non-figurative & non-linear styles that are often included in surrealism, dadaism, cubism, fauvism, suprematism, art informel, neo-plasticism, de stijl & others.    This next Call wants to see all of your abstract creations.  My heart lies with abstraction, although I find reactions to it frustrating.  What’s your experience?  Are you insulated enough not to hear the voices of those that would dismiss the non-representational?  My mantra is ‘process not product’.  Excerise your muscle memory.  Lose yourself in process.  It works for me.  What works for you?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Las Laguna Gallery (Laguna Beach, CA) for Unique Abstractions, a show of abstract work in a wide range of media. $35 entry & 35% commission.  Don’t miss this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences

Learn more about Embracing our Differences 2018!i always need TACOS

I eat SO MANY tacos.  Because I travel so often, I find picking a good restaurant, be it counter service or table, has odds not unlike roulette (37 to 1).  But I have consistently had great tacos, nearly everywhere.  I rarely meet anyone that doesn’t like a good taco.  They are like the great joiners of people.  Aside from being bad eating-while-driving food (due to the mess), I can eat a taco almost anywhere with almost anyone.  Differences seem to disappear.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the answer to embracing our differences was a simple as the ordering from the local taco truck?  It isn’t, but until we find a solution and do the work, this next Call wants your ideas about coexistence.  Take a look…

Check out the Call for Entries for the Annual Embracing our Differences Exhibit in Sarasota, FL. Your work on a billboard, no entry fee & $3000 in awards. Plus, this is a great way to try on public art for size. Don’t miss this opportunity…

Peanut butter & jam used to be my go-to comfort food, back before wheat allergies took my family down with a thud.  So I’ve been trying out abstractions of the PB&J.  Peanuts & raisins, dried cranberries & sunflower seeds, and my favorite, pumpkin seeds and raspberries.  It is the same comfort, but without the structure.  I’m a fan.  This next Call wants to test your comfort with abstraction.  Take a look…

BEANS
of green

The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

David Bowie influenced so much of the world — music, fashion, design.  He died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Helen Green may have captured his sense of life and change and joy the best.  Thanks, Helen, for the bright spot in a dark day.
