Digital cookbooks are not working for me.  I recently bought a gluten-free cookbook on my Kindle.  Just, NO.  First of all, my Kindle buttons don’t need butter and flaxseed crusted on them.  Secondly, because my kindle displays one page at a time, it requires an impractical amount of flipping pages.  Sometimes you just need the book.  This next Call banks on the fact that curators and directors might feel the same way.  Take a look…

While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. 2011 ARTIST of the YEAR: Pamela Zimmerman

Today marks a New Year for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com! And, per usual, I am running a little behind the traditionally recognized New Year Celebration (December 31st), but I love Chinese New Year (yesterday).  And, I almost got this post done by then, ha!   I, of course, always appreciate an excuse to eat Chinese food…it doesn’t have to be  a holiday.

This is the day we name the
Artist of the Year for 2011.

 

When this blog began in September of 2009, I was determined to cover not only art deadlines but also really good art. And, I chose a few artists here and there. I quickly realized that the Featured Artist program needed structure, or it would never really get done on any sort of regular basis. The $2 Art Contest was born.

And the idea of
the Artist of the Year
was born.
 

 

I now give all of our Featured Artists each year notice that on December 31st at midnight EST, the Artist of the Year would be determined by the number of comments on their individual Featured Artist blog posts.

Right out of the gate, three artists’ fans came out strong: Denee BlackDeanna Bowdish, and Pamela Zimmerman. And after a month of voting, the final count was close… only a few dozen votes separated Black, Bowdish and Zimmerman.

PAC Gallery invites submissions for a mural to be installed on the gallery’s exterior March 9-May 27, 2012.  The mural space allows artists the opportunity to showcase their work in a public setting.  The space is 5 feet tall and 10 feet wide (designs must utilize the majority of this space). Applicants are asked to submit images of their current bodies of work and the projected proposal for the mural (this could be a drawing or mockup of your intention for the space or a written description).

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists (professionals, students, amateurs).

How to Get an Art Show: The Dinner Invitation

My mother is a great cook.  When I decided I wanted to learn how to can my own tomatoes, I asked her advice.  I was annoyed by her answer because of how much seeminly unnecessary work was involved in canning something I could easily buy at the grocery store.  I did it my way and ignored her advice all together.  She enjoys telling anyone who will listen about how I cleaned tomatoes off the walls and ceiling of my laundry room for weeks.  I should have listened.  I didn’t have to DO it her way, but if I had listened, I would be enduring the laughter almost 20 years later and might not still be BUYING canned tomatoes.  The moral of the story is pay attention…

I receive lots of “cooking questions” from readers, and I have noticed one question pop up repeatedly in my inbox, “How do I contact an art gallery about showing my work?”  I’m going to answer it, and you don’t have to do it my way.  But, don’t blame me if you end up with tomato on your face.  Check it out…

Get invited to the Party!CONTACTING A
GALLERY

1.  Dinner Invitation:  The simplest, most obvious answer is: Enter a juried show.  This site publishes invitations to those dinner parties almost EVERY DAY.  Most gallery directors view juried show entries like gifts at at holiday party.  They are excited to open them and hopeful of finding a little gem.  Make a good impression, and you just might get a solo show offer.  It really happens.

2. Plus One: If the invitation to dinner pan out, don’t forget about the Plus One.  The single best way to get in touch with a gallery is by personal introduction from someone they have already invited to the party.  An artist or friend that a gallery director already knows and trusts is the easiest way in.  Don’t know anyone?  Unlikely.  Treat it like six degrees of separation and do your homework.

Get invited to the Party!3.  Party Crasher:  The last answer is… be a wanted party crasher.  If you’re gonna crash a party, make sure you make the most of your entrance.  Unless you are a true people person, I don’t recommend just showing up at a gallery unannounced or calling and fumbling through awkward conversations about how you are the next best thing.  Submit your work to the gallery by delivery via mail or messenger.  But, it doesn’t have to be subtle.  Make a splash in a good way when you crash the party, and next time you might be on the invitation list. 

For example, I one had a friend who made a mock up of the gallery in miniature with his own work hanging in it… and got a solo show.  I had another friend send a 4×6 canvas a day for 30 days to a gallery director who then had to assemble them into a painting at the end.  She got a show too.  They want to like you… give them a reason.

Check out the BECA Foundation online!THE BACK STORY:  In October of 2007, BECA Co-founders/Directors Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough hatched a unique experimental arts project that would give new access to exhibition opportunities to creatives without regard to their academic degree status, exhibition history, who they knew or where they were from.  It has remained the only exhibition program in the Unites States that which maintains this submission criteria while utilizing the only consistent blind curatorial review process in the world. The unique programming went one step further in that it was the first international exhibition program in the United States that which focused on created opportunities for both artists and designers alike. 

Now that the difficult groundwork of BECA programming has been laid, it is time for BECA Co-Founders/Directors to pursue their other passions while remaining connected to BECA programming by serving on its developing Board of Directors. 

BECA has begun the search to find
BECA’s first official Executive Director. 

 

Check out BECA online!Once the Executive Director is hired, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough will maintain a support role during the transition and eventually serve on a newly formed BECA Board of Directors.  It will not be easy to fill the shoes of the current Directors as the new Executive Director will have to wear many hats until additional staff can be hired.  In order to take BECA programming to the next level of its growth, the new Executive Director must serve as Fundraiser, PR Director, Social Media Manager, Director of Operations, Accountant, Program Director, Artist Liaison, Volunteer Coordinator and more.

DEADLINE:  There is no deadline for receipt and no immediate hiring timeline.

NOTIFICATION:  This process is expected to take a considerable amount of review time.  The BECA Foundation will only be able to contact those it wishes to receive additional information from or those it wishes to interview for the position.

FREAKY & FRUITY

With rare exception, I am not a fan of fruit and meat combinations.  Keep your pineapple off my pizza and out of my stirfry.  Lemons and limes are acceptable, and figs and plums are only allowed in Mediterranean food.  While I don’t care to mix my food groups sometimes, mixed media in artwork is a different story.  This Call gives you an opportunity to show your best mixed media work (or collage and digital).  Don’t miss this opportunity for artist representation too!
