Why does beer come in six packs?  My house is dotted with six packs.  It isn’t like THAT.  I am NOT a beer drinker, but my husband IS a beer brewer.  My son’s room would be far less cluttered if beer were more efficiently packaged.  Did I forget to mention that my husband stores his beer under my 12-year-old’s bed? Okay, I am going to stop before this sounds even worse.  This call is a much better use of things that come in sixes.  Take a look…

I love one-pot, one-pan, or one-dish meals. Admittedly, I appreciate the lazy factor, but there is also something to be said for a dish that can stand on its own without supporting side dishes.  I love brussel sprouts, but I don’t really NEED them with every meal any more that you NEED fries with every fast food burger.  This next call gives you the chance to go solo as well.  Take a chance…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gowanus Print Lab (Brooklyn, NY) for a Solo Show.  The entry fee is a little less than average, and since the show starts on February 8th… the notification time has to be short.  Take a look…

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this annual call, it also reminds me of phenomenal art opportunities as well!  The holidays are in the air…

I am always amazed by how a simple ingredient can be transformed into a magnificent dish.  Root vegetables are the perfect example.  Who would of thought that something that spent most of the time it has existed under the ground could be transformed into something beautiful, warm and nutty?  I think of a luscious crock of roasted carrot soup with a hint of ginger and nutmeg.  This Call wants you to contemplate transformation.  Give it a try…

Food in academic settings takes on a very different feel and taste.  I spent a year in culinary school before I realized I didn’t have the stamina to make my living standing on my feet.  But, I learned priceless knife and sauce skills that I treasure.  One of the most interesting things about my inital year at Johnson & Wales was the time spent on analyzing the basics, perfecting the standards before having the freedom to break the rules.  This next Call is for media considered the foundation of art education, but there’s no restriction on content.  Break the rules for me…

I have to admit that my Australian food experience has been lacking over the years.  However, a Chef named Jason introduced me to Vegemite this Spring.  Like you probably, my only previous experience with Vegemite was the Men At Work song.  Traditionally, this paste made from a by-product of beer-brewing and is eaten on buttered toast.  My taste was Vegemite mixed heavily with butter and eaten with pita.  Yum.  Give it a try if you get a chance.  So, have you figured out this next Call is from Australia yet? Sometimes it take me multiple tries to learn a lesson.  For example, I am not a good baker.  It has taken many failed attempts at breads, muffins and biscuits for me to come to grips with this unfortunate reality.  And lately, the same is true with art.  How many times do I have to watch my friends and collegues revel in their successful publication attempts and the resulting opportunitites before I quit missing out?  No more for me.  And, that is why I keep beating the egg of art publication over and over…because I know eventually you will listen.  Here is a great Art Publication opportunity.  Don’t miss it…

I love reading about food almost as much as cooking it and eating it.  Amongst my favorites are polar opposites:  Cooking Light and Food & Wine.  No surprise, I’ve had a bit of a struggle with my weight over the years.  In recent years, I’ve gotten better control of my food issues by figuring out one amazing fact… My menu is far more varied and exciting when I am trying to figure out how to do it in a healthy manner.  It was a fascinating personal discovery.  So, while I adore the gourmand Food & Wine, I am personally more likely to actually prepare foods found in Cooking Light.  This next call can make your work the tempting dessert on the cover of an art catalog.  Take a look…

Remember when green beens were everyone’s “go to” vegetable?  They were in every frozen meal and stocked in everyone’s pantry for a quick addition to any meal.  I suspect that’s how they got their bad reputation with kids.  I have noticed lately that sugar snap peas seem to be the new green beans.  Luckily, I love them, and kids seem to like the fact that they are a little sweeter than tried-and-true green beans.
