My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. I am always amazed by how a simple ingredient can be transformed into a magnificent dish. Root vegetables are the perfect example. The Annual International Exhibition is a juried competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served in past years as jurors selecting works for the exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists living today. Every year 3 – 6 works are awarded a cash prize or are purchased by the Department from this exhibition. The purchase awards have made it possible for the University to build a collection of over 250 contemporary works of art from outstanding contemporary artists. This collection serves as an educational teaching resource and is exhibited in fine art teaching areas and other areas throughout the campus.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: Any two-dimensional work including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are acceptable completed within the last three (3) years.

DEADLINE: November 21, 2011

NOTIFICATION: December 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30 for 3 works

JUROR: Karl Umlauf holds a BFA from UT Austin and MFA from Cornell University. His work is inspired by structural forms of land and contains imagery from petroleum refineries, salvage yards, and steel mills. He uses color and imagery to convey rhythm, properties of tension, and physics, with his most famous works consisting of large fiberglass sculptures and cast paper formations. Karl Umlauf’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and New Orleans Museum of Art. He is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a teaching professor at Baylor University.

AWARDS: Cash and purchase awards will be made and works added to the UT Tyler Department of Art and Art History permanent collection.

Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, professors, instructors, graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and fine artists in all media.

All entries must have been completed during the last twelve months. No surprise, I’ve had a bit of a struggle with my weight over the years. Jerry’s Artarama is running a cover contest to find artwork that fits with our ongoing theme of “Empowering Artists”. Last year’s (2011) catalog cover was the start of it featuring Rosie the Riveter in her Iconic pose. This year will be the continuation of this committment.

I grew up with a jar of chow-chow frequently on the table as THE condiment of choice. For those of you not familiar with this pickled treat, Chow-chow is a pickled relish made from a combination of vegetables. Mainly green tomato, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, carrots and peas are used.
