CALL for ENTRIES: We Love People

Learn more about the We Love People exhibit from Atelier Alen!so so many EGGS

We eat dozens & dozens of eggs each month. It would be easy to assume that when we’re out, we’d avoid them.  That’s not really the case.  I have them fried, over-medium, after late night outings, take them cold & hard-boiled to picnics or on early mornings.  And on my recent stop at Sugar Mama’s, a little bakery/bar combo, in Knoxville, I was treated to “German Eggs”.  Think of it as a fluffy egg bake or like a crustless quiche.  Delicious.  (Funny enough, German tourists suggested we Google “german eggs slang”. Funny.)  This Call hails from Munich, but doesn’t require the inclusion of eggs.  Great international show opportunity…

“We love People. What is it about them that we like, admire & adore so much? Is it their actions, their words, or just their presence? Personality, shared experiences & situations can all contribute to shaping the feelings that people inspire in us, and the force of love & affection can manifest itself in countless different ways. What is it that we love so much about people? How do these feelings express themselves? And how can we capture this love & transcribe it photographically?” –from atelier-alen.com

I grow basil in most of the window sills in my home for just one purpose –making homemade pesto.  I can’t grow much outdoors due to the bears and turkey and wild pigs (no, really).  So, my windowsills stay full.  I haven’t reaped much yet this year, and my stash of pesto is gone.  Sad.  But as I was excavating my freezer to avoid going to the grocery before dinner, I found a lone artifact– a bag of frozen basil large enough for a side dish.  This next Call is interested in YOUR artifacts.  Take a look…

entirely DRINKABLE

I lived in the USVI for a couple of years, and my house used only cistern water.   Rainfall kept the supply flowing for most of the year, but a couple of months prior to the rainy season we’d have to pay to have the cistern fill… about $500.  That was 20 years ago.  I try to internalize this memory every time I pay my $85 water bill.  Well, that and I can actually cook with the tap water at my current home.  Back then the hashtag would have been #dontlookinthebottomofcistern or #youdontwanttoknow.  This next call is all about the water, and there are no restriction on the orgin of YOUR water.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Girls, Girls, Girls!

Learn more about the Girls, Girls, Girls!girly GREENS

The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing.  Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts.  Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food.  I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress.  My husband agrees.  And while salad may not be all about the girls, this Call is. soup to BEANS

It is all a matter of taste, right?  I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad.  Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup.  That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes.  SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some.  I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no.  It is a black and white issue for me –just like this next Call.  Investigate this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Light & Shadow

Learn more about the Light and Shadow exhibit from 1650 Gallery!shelf LIFE

My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors.  My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets.  There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows.  I am moving to an all new, albeit all tiny, space in 12 to 18 months, and all the kitchen storage will be open.  All light and no shadows for me.  This Call, however, wants both your light AND your shadows.  Take a look…

“The beauty of light never fails to inspire. It comes in many colors and styles, from the soft monochrome palette of the pre-dawn to the raging intensity of Times Square at midnight. Light can dazzle, light can seduce; light can be so intoxicating many spend hours attempting to capture its essence inside a tiny light-tight box otherwise known as a “camera.” Whether the photographer chooses color or black and white, the expression and compression of the wonder of light from our daily world onto a 2d piece of paper in a compelling way remains both the Nirvana and the great white whale of all photographers past, present and future. Studious professional photo-geek Ansel Adams identified 10 distinct “zones” of light from pitch black to pure light in an attempt to tame the photo beast; in his wake countless lives have been dedicated to the artistic pursuit of these 10 expressions of luminosity” — from 1650 Gallery

FOOD

Time for planting decisions has arrived.  We’re probably clear of the last frost where I live, but now it is time for mama black bears and their cubs to begin wandering out of their dens.  In fact, critters all seem to be ready to get the season started.  So, how do I choose to what to plant?  I need hardy veggies that aren’t overly attractive to foraging wildlife.  Then there is what we have dubbed the fern-factor.  There seem to be some things, I simply cannot grow; tomatoes & ferns are on the short list.  Funny how gardens differ based on the gardener.  Thumbs definitely come in different shades of green. This Call for photography wants to see your interpretation of how the figure influences the landscape.  Take a look…

The relationship between a figure & the landscape context can be powerful. Landscapes are often presented as pristine places, without human presence.  However, figures within landscapes can play dynamic roles as scale elements, protagonists in a narrative, or mysterious presences.  Sometimes figures can ask more questions about a place than they can answer.  For this exhibition photographs that extend beyond documentation of place to bring a human element into the natural or urban landscape are sought. –from laphotocurator.com

I like to think I eat fairly clean.  But by coincidence, I ran out of all of my standard sauces at one time which necessitated my seeing them ALL in my shopping cart at once.  Who new? Soy, fish, oyster, Worcestershire, Thai chili, plum, four vinegars, 3 mustards, and lets not forget sriracha. In my defense, there ARE a few of scratch-made ones like barbecue & chocolate sauce.  It seems my portfolio of foods aren’t all as pure as I’d like to believe.  This next Call want your purely individual portfolio.  Take a look…
