CALL for ENTRIES: Figures & Faces

Learn more about the Figures & Faces exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!i taste FLORIDA

I have a friend that claims every pack of Chicken McNuggets has one shaped like the state of Florida.  I followed the comment thread white people disputed that shape of the figure from bunnies to revolvers to other states and countries.  It devolved into what words appearing in soup & crackers and saints on toast.  People often see what they want to see.  It is like the culinary version of Rorschach ink blot test.  Fascinating.  This next Call wants to know what figures and faces you see.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: monochrome

Learn more about the monochrome exhibit at Las Laguna Gallery!sautee or FRY?

There is a fine line between golden goodness & fried brown sameness.  I have an aunt who won’t eat “lacy” eggs or “dirty” biscuits, her phraseology for anything browned, but she only eats meats well done. (Go figure.)  Personally, I love a butter browned anything, but I shy away from the monotony of bread-crumb brown.  This next Call wants your monotone work –food references not requiredTake a look…

Peanut butter & jam used to be my go-to comfort food, back before wheat allergies took my family down with a thud.  So I’ve been trying out abstractions of the PB&J.  Peanuts & raisins, dried cranberries & sunflower seeds, and my favorite, pumpkin seeds and raspberries.  It is the same comfort, but without the structure.  I’m a fan.  This next Call wants to test your comfort with abstraction.  Take a look…

BEANS
of green

The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

My first encounter with a peppercorn was in olive loaf. My father deluded himself into the notion that a seven year old was the target audience for this studded meat product.  I survived.  I love olives, and fresh peppercorns make my stock & dressings sing. (I still shun the loaf of olive, though.)  Both olives & peppercorns are perfect example huge impact in tiny packages — the inspiration for the next Call.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Bring us Your Dead

Learn more about the Bring us your Dead exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!shared TREATS

My Aunt Maggie B. loved marzipan. We would attempt to craft our own from honey, powdered sugar and finely ground almonds & foregoing the additional almond extract.  The year I spent with her trying to form our Play-Doh-like lumps into little fruit and vegetable shapes taught me that food color can be derived from real food, not just a jar, that gold and silver are edible in small amounts, and that treats well-labored taste better.  I celebrate the making & eating of every marzipan fruit with my great aunt Mag (RIP, 1922-2005).  This Call is a chance for you to celebrate life with someone who has already passed.  Take a look…

I’m taking less food pics in restaurants these days.  I’ve been shamed into stopping.  How ’bout you?  Now when I am served a beautiful dish, I have to weigh whether it is worth the condescending looks of disdain from servers and other patrons. Sigh.  The only advantage is that taking pictures at home allows me to use a really camera, not my phone, and get the cherries arranged just so.  Plus, now I can re-heat dinner after I get the perfect shot, ha.  This next Call is interested in your perfect shots.  Take a look…

CHOW

Food for women apparently exists.  Well, it isn’t food exclusively for women, but I discovered there are a few foods that are even better for you if you’re female– including one of my favorites, flaxseed.  Not using flaxseed?  I love ground flaxseed as a substitute for bread crumbs on top of casseroles.   I mix flaxseed with a little Parmesan and a mist of olive oil and return the casserole to the oven until it just starts to brown.  Flaxseed adds a nutty flavor that I prefer over cracker crumbs, hands down.  This Call is also meant for women.  Take a look…

SQUASH

While most of the world is obsessed with pumpkin-flavor, not actual pumpkin, I am reveling in the other winter squashes — butternut, acorn & patty pan.  My farmers market sells these squash, in season, for $1 each.  Split & roast one of each squash, scoop out the insides and puree through the food processor, add a little salt, pepper, garlic and a touch of curry or a few red pepper flakes, and the resulting squash soup is divine.  It looks like baby food, but the flavor is unbelievable.  I makes lunch for all three of us for at least two or three days.  Squash, just squash.  It’s a solo act, just like this next Call.  Take a look…
