FURRY FOOD

Sometimes you just have to eat it.  Food can be scary AND wonderful.  You will never know until you eat it.  Someone had to eat the first kiwi fruit, the first coconut, and the first peanut. Be brave.  This next Call takes a little bravery too.  More than a few of you out there are a touch jaded, and I will grant that many of you have been burned and have good reason.  I just want you to remember that sometimes, just sometimes, you have to be brave…

Check out this Call for Entries for the Emergent Artist Award, conducted in partnership with the Alliance Française of Dubai, a French cultural organization.  I can usually vouch for most of the galleries or competitions, but I’m going on what I could read this time.  I have to admit, though, I love the idea of an international solo exhibit in two countries.  It is work a look…

I only eat chili in winter.  It isn’t the spice; I eat spicy food all summer.  It isn’t the temperature; I eat hot meals everyday.  But, for whatever reason, chili = winter.  Just around the corner is the chili apex of my winter…the local Chili Cookoff.  It isn’t a culinary wonderland, believe me.  There are no surprises: the police department wins every year, and some yahoo will put Hershey’s Kisses™ in their chili.  But, after a night off glorious gorging on gallons of chili, we will watch as they throw the switch on the holiday lights as we all gaze upward at the winter fireworks show.  I’ll go to sleep with a smile on my face having forgotten that I will soon start belching cumin.  This next call wantes to know what Winter means to you.  I’d leave out the belching part, if I were you…

I am grateful that I never have to attempt making biscuits again.  I went to cooking school for a year, and it was popular to characterize the pastry folk, and anyone who made bakery goods as a little wacky.  The popular theory was they snorted too much flour.  However, I found this characterization an easy rationalization for why I can’t make biscuits –clearly, I am too sane to master the task.  Luckily, my crazy mother taught my crazy husband how to make biscuits, and I don’t ever have to do it again. This Call wants to know what makes you feel gratitude.  I’d be grateful for a glass of artisan wine right now…

CANNED FOOD

There are very few truly black foods.  Black truffles, black and white cookies, squid ink pasta… none of those are truly black in color.  When I think of black foods, one shining, delicious example comes through immediately. One Picture is worth a thousand words is a common belief that information can be conveyed more accurately and efficiently by images than words.  And the power of narrative, or story telling is at the foundation of much of photography.  Photograhers are creating complex and descriptive moments in time.  Contemporary photographers are crafting and documenting new forms of a visual short story.

“We’re looking for something beyond the traditional portrait – more than just a eloquently captured face. We’re looking for uncanny, parody, distortions, subtle suggestions and in-your-face implications. For “Persona” we’re looking for portraits devised outside the box (or in one, might also be applicable in certain circumstances!) – we want to see the characters you’ve captured.

“There can more to a superb portrait than a superb likeness of an individual a the testimony to their soul can be visioned way beyond the eyes. How much can you tell us about a person with just one image? Their life story? Perhaps. How did you show the idiosyncrasies, quirks, that make your sitters both physically and emotionally, individuals? We can’t wait to fill our gallery walls with a newly visioned kind of face – portrait as character and caricature.”
