Fast food is fast, but I wonder about the food part. Like you, I am frequently too busy to cook or even shop for food for that matter. But, I have found a lazy alternative to fast food, the rotisserie chicken. In my version, I have it over romaine with a little parmesan, a few croutons, italian dressing,a a couple of pepperoncini on the side. CALL for ENTRIES: Art of Photography

The Art of Photography Show 2011 is a world-class international exhibition of photographic art which will occur August 13 – October 16 at the elegant two-level Lyceum Theatre Gallery, a perfect venue for exhibiting a large showcase of photography.

ELIGIBILITY: Any person in the world may submit images for consideration. Art must be original, created by the person who enters that work. Entries previously submitted to the Art of Photography Show are eligible for consideration if: A) They were not selected for exhibition, and B) The digital criteria defined above is met. Art which has been exhibited within a previous Art of Photography Show is not eligible.

MEDIA: Any form of photography will be accepted for consideration (i.e. shot on film, shot digitally, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc.), so long as part of the image is photographically created.

DEADLINE: May 31st, 2011 at 11:59 PDT (California time) is the deadline for submission of entries, registration form and entry fee. Editor’s note: It is just around the corner, but you can enter online!

NOTIFICATION: Announced June 14, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $25 for the first entry, $10 for each additional entry. There is no limit to the number of entries an artist may enter. Artists who entered work in any previous Art of Photography Show or Art of Digital Show will receive a $15 discount towards the Art of Photography Show 2011. (The registration system will recognize your email address, so be sure to register with the same email address that you used when you registered previously). The “entry fee” is the fee to enter images in this competition. Once the entry deadline has passed, the entry fee is non-refundable.

JUROR: Anne M. Lyden, the Associate Curator , Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles

AWARDS: $2,000 1st Place Award, $1,600 2nd Place Award, $1,200 3rd Place Award, $ 800 4th Place Award, and $ 400 (11) Honorable Mention Awards.

SALES: Exhibited work will be available for sale (unless the artist designates certain entries NFS). The price for each framed print is entirely up to each artist to decide. The Art of Photography Show will retain a commission of 35% on all sales that occur during the exhibit or which occur later as a direct result of the exhibit. The balance will be mailed to the artist.

CALL for ENTRIES:
NY Art Marathon

The NY ART MARATHON is an international art competition, which offers its 10 finalists the opportunity to participate in a group show in New York City; a $3000 cash prize for the winner; a People’s Award for the most voted-for artist.

NYAM is a new type of art contest, where everybody gets rewarded. Each member of the NY ART MARATHON participates in the online group show. The first hundred participants receive their work reviewed by the curator.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Any media and genres are welcome, from traditional to digital.

The theme for THE NY ART MARATHON Spring 2011 is

JUROR: The curator and juror for the NY ART MARATHON Spring 2011 is David Gibson, a well-known NY art critic and curator who has curated numerous shows all over the United States, reviewed by the New York Times, Art in America, The Miami Herald, New York Arts, New York Art World, WagMag, Time Out NY, The Cleveland Free Times, Sculpture Magazine, The Village Voice, and other publications. As an art critic, David Gibson published numerous catalogue essays, books and exhibition reviews. David Gibson taught and gave lectures at the University of Massachusetts, Indiana University, University of Central Florida, Christie’s Education, University of Wisconsin, School of Visual Arts NY, Pratt Institute NY, The Cleveland Institute of Art, Parsons School of Design NY, and other institutions, and was an interviewer and was himself interviewed on radio and television.

Highly-acclaimed artist Vitaly Komar is represented at some of world’s best museums and private art collections, and has been included in “100 Best Artists of the 20th Century.”

Alexandre Gertsman is New York’s premier dealer in contemporary Russian art. He represents well-known and established Russian-born artists and develops new, young, emerging artists. Mr. Gertsman has curated more than 40 traveling major museum exhibitions of Russian art throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia. He was also a Member of the Leadership Committee and Sponsor for the highly-acclaimed RUSSIA! exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1993, Mr. Gertsman founded the International Foundation of Russian and Eastern European Art, which introduced the American public to the largely unknown and undiscovered world of Russian contemporary art.He furthered this with the formation of the American Friends of the Tretyakov Gallery founded in 2002, which supports and contributes to the programs of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and fundraises for the return of artworks by former dissident artists.

Jill Conner is the New York Editor of Whitehot Magazine (pictured left)and Editor of On-Verge. She is also a curator and contributor to Afterimage, ArtUS, Art in America, Interview Magazine, Performance Art Journal and Sculpture Magazine. Two summer 2011 exhibitions that she has curated are “Reverb: New Work by Vicki DaSilva,” at Able Fine Art Gallery and “Vestige” at the AIR Gallery.

AWARDS: 10 finalists participate in THE NY ART MARATHON group show in New York City during the month of July 2011. The Winner – chosen by the juror – receives a $3000 cash prize. The most voted-for artist receives the People’s Award and is featured for a year on the main webpage of THE NY ART MARATHON. Each week, the juror / curator selects several artists from the participants who submitted their artworks during that week. The selected artists receive an online group show with a review of their submitted artworks by the curator.

Each of the first hundred participants receives an online group show with the review of the submitted artworks by the curator. Each participant who is not in the first hundred or was not selected by the juror / curator during the week of their submission takes part in an online group show so every participant of THE NY ART MARATHON is rewarded. JUROR: Nick Brandt‘s images have been described as “…an ambitious and ongoing photographic project to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. Brandt’s monochrome widescreen panoramas of animals and landscapes capture an epic vision of Africa that has not been seen before. His iconic portraits of its majestic animals are filled with an empathy usually reserved for human subjects.”

In 2000, Brandt set upon a three part project that he calls “an elegy to a world that is tragically vanishing.” 90 photographs from this decade long project have been condensed into two recent publications On This Earth and A Shadow Falls. Further solidifying his commitment to the African wilderness, Brandt recently established the remarkable Big Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of Africa’s wildlife and ecosystems.

Brandt has had multiple solo exhibitions worldwide, including in New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Sydney, Munich, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris.

AWARDS: With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants, and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition.

When people hear “American Food” they think of a homogenous buffet of beige food, but American food is a great quilt of influences from around the world. For example, New Mexican Cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona. One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile—in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked. Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating. Eat a little for me at the opening of this next show…

CALL for ENTRIES: Art of the Plains 2011

The American Plains Artists announce a call to artists for a juried exhibition, September 8 – October 30, 2011 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Las Cruces, NM.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists working in any traditional 2D or 3D fine art media in a realistic or representational manner reflecting the theme of the American Plains completed within the last three years, original work only and not previously shown with APA.

MEDIA: No photography or computer generated art accepted. We have to have both the image size of the artwork itself and the outside dimensions of the frame. The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame. An example of that is a 24″ x 36″ artwork with a five inch frame. Sculpture would be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds. Artwork must represent the theme of the show: American Plains.

DEADLINE: June 4, 2011 for digital entries.

NOTIFICATION: Acceptance Letters will be mailed on or before July 2, 2011.

JUROR: New Mexican cowboy artist Robert “SHOOFLY” Shufelt has created graphite drawings that have become an important thread in the fabric of Western Art, earning world wide recognition. His work illuminates the bare bones of an artist’s craft and portrays the physical evidence of his perception. They are celebrations of a dreamer who has allowed his dream to become reality with all its grit and honesty, yet he still finds the work endlessly nteresting and satisfying. He has an artist’s vision of cowboys as they can only be around another cowboy, unposed and unself-conscious. They are men who practice their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving it up to the rest of us to determine whether they’re working or playing. These disciples of the “cowboy way” are Shoofly’s top hands and his work is forever honored by their friendship.

And, thanks to my food obsession, you won’t be surprised to learn that my weight has gone rather up and not so much down over the years. I can’t just love art and food and food-themed art. Oh no, I’d even love to wear art and food (like the dress in this Sarah Illenberger photo pictured left). Sign me up. Now. Sculpture Visions

Experienced artists and artist teams are invited to apply for Sculpture Visions, a juried outdoor sculpture exhibition that will be on view from October 2011 through September 2012 in public spaces in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This invitation is extended to all artists regardless of their state of residence and there is no entry fee. In addition to finished pieces, proposed work will also be considered.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists regardless of residence. North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply. Participating artists must carry liability insurance.

MEDIA: Original three-dimensional artwork of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display.

DEADLINE: Monday, July 18, 2011, no later than 5:00 pm

NOTIFICATION: Beginning on Friday, August 5, 2011, Chapel Hill Public & Cultural Arts staff will notify artists of the Selection Committee results and will make exhibition arrangements with selected artists.

JUROR: An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public & Cultural Arts Office, participating exhibition venues and local artists will review all complete applications and select and site artworks for the Exhibition. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media in appropriate sites.

AWARDS: Selected artists will receive a total honorarium of $1,500 per selected artwork that is intended to cover all expenses, including travel and liability insurance. This honorarium will be paid in two installments: $750 after the work is installed in October 2011 and $750 after the work has been removed from the site in September of 2012.

Brand 40 – Works on Paper

The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center and the Glendale Public Library announce a call to artists for an exhibition September 17 – October 28, 2011 at the Brand Library Art Galleries in Glendale, CA. The Brand Library Art Galleries offer visitors a professional gallery experience and showcases works by established and emerging artists that educate, enlighten, challenge and enrich people’s lives.

ELIGIBILITY: Participation is open to artists residing in the United States. Entries must be original work recently executed and not previously shown at the Brand Library Art Galleries. Do not submit work, unless available August 12 to October 29, 2011.

MEDIA: Any work on paper: collages, drawings, paintings, photography, prints, watercolors, 3-dimensional work, etc. The “topic” for this show is “Entrances & Exits.”

DEADLINE: June 1, 2011 for receipt of signed entry form, CD, fees and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

JUROR: Peter Frank is art critic for the Huffington Post and Adjunct Senior Curator at the Riverside Art Museum. He is past critic for Angeleno magazine and the L. A. Weekly and was Editor for THE magazine Los Angeles and Visions Art Quarterly. Frank was born in New York, where he served as art critic for The Village Voice and The SoHo Weekly News, and moved to Los Angeles in 1988.

Frank contributes articles to numerous publications and has organized numerous theme and survey shows, most notably “19 Artists – Emergent Americans,” the 1981 Exxon National Exhibition mounted at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. McPherson & Co. Documentext published his Something Else Press: An Annotated Bibliography in 1983. A cycle of poems, The Travelogues, was issued by Sun & Moon Press in 1982. Abbeville Press released New, Used & Improved, an overview of the New York art scene co-written with Michael McKenzie, in 1987.

AWARDS: $4000 in prizes will be awarded.

I believe that food has a sense of place. When you eat cotton candy, don’t you think of going to the fair? When I taste boiled peanuts (Yes, Virginia, they do exist), I am instantly transported to South Carolina. You have associations of your own, no doubt. This Call is named Sense of Place, but it isn’t a theme. Maybe it comes from the enormous sense of place felt even through photographs of this beautiful gallery space. Inspired yet?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA for the 2011 National Juried Exhbition: A Sense of Place. The entry fee is low, and once again, the juror is well-documented and happens to be a printmaker, although many media are embraced. This looks like a winner…

CALL for ENTRIES: A Sense of Place

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is pleased to announce its 2011 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this 31st annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), GHIA is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery. The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round. In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY: The 2011 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older. All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2009.

MEDIA: Painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. Film and video pieces are ineligible. The exhibition is not judged in media categories.

DEADLINE: Postmarked by June 3, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Mailed July 22, 2011. *Editor’s Note: Just allow me to say “Wow!” GHIA still sends REAL letters.

ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable fee of $30 enables each artist to enter up to three works; additional works may be submitted at a cost of $5 each. Please submit one digital image per work; one additional detail image will be accepted for three dimensional works. JUROR: Tom Hammond, noted printmaker and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, will serve as juror for A Sense of Place 2011. Over the past thirty years Hammond has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows throughout the United States and abroad. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina. Hammond holds a master of arts from East Carolina University and also studied at Atelier 17 in Paris.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. Award recipients will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 16, 2011.

SALES: Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS). A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

Sometimes you have to eat outside your comfort zone. I’m not suggesting you all go out and order brains to go with your eggs at the diner, but I am asking you to live a little. Ordering food from a menu that you may not like is not earth shattering. There ARE worse things. Expand your palate. You would be amazed at the adrenaline rush I get from discovering a new taste or food experience. This Call will be a challenge for a few of you closet sculptors out there. *Editor’s note: I know there are a large number of you that sculpt, even if it isn’t your primary media. If you aren’t sure you are ready to jump into this arena, I want to encourage you to visit a local university campus. Inevitably they have outdoor sculpture that may inspire you… or at least get you thinking about what that sculpture needs to endure outdoors for a year. Don’t just dismiss the call… give it a chance.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Outdoor Sculpture

The 16th annual exhibition will be August 2011 to July 2012 and will feature up to five sculptures. The purpose of the annual outdoor exhibition is to provide the campus with a different selection of sculptures each year. The exhibition will allow the featured works to be complemented by the natural beauty of the campus and experienced in a casual, unhurried way by visitors, students and faculty. A brochure will be published which will feature each selected sculpture and a map of a walking tour of the sites.

ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all sculptors internationally 18 years of age and older. Artists may enter up to three works for consideration.

MEDIA: All submitted sculptural work must be of sound design, free standing and suitable for outdoor public display without external support. Steel and concrete pedestals and ground mounts will be provided for each selected entry when required. Only finished works will be considered.

DEADLINE: Entry forms and CDs must be in the hands of the committee by midnight May 31, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: $25 non-refundable entrance fee. Please make checks payable to Washburn University, with Campus Beautification Committee written in the notation line.

JUROR: A professional selection committee will choose up to five sculptures through a process of jury review. Jurors are not eligible to submit work.

AWARDS: $1,000 per sculpture paid as an honoraria. Washburn will facilitate purchases of selected artwork without commission. The exhibition is coordinated by, and funded through, the Campus Beautification Committee of Washburn University.

I must admit that I am more motivated when there is a cash savings involved. But with food, I am all about the green alternatives. Local foods are fresher and tend to be cheaper, and some local products like honey are said to help combat seasonal allergies. Down on the Farm

Your source material for “Down on the Farm” is endless: the backyard garden to the 1000-acre ranch, rice paddies to cotton fields, the chicken coop to the breeding barn, milking stand to dairy co-operative, sugar house to forest floor, road-side veggie stand to farmers’ markets, agricultural auctions to agricultural fairs. This is your chance to pay tribute to the men and women who work the land and raise the animals that nourish us all.

A look back: the Farm Security Administration was born in 1935 in the United States as a means to battle poverty in rural America. It was the documentary photographic work born of this era and via the goals of the FSA, that the first major bodies of work depicting agriculture and its social realities came into being. The majority of the work produced was by fifteen Photographers (a total of 44 photographers had been hired) including such greats as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Carl Mydans and Ben Shahn. Look to their images, as well as contemporary Ag-Documentarians for your inspiration (Paul Mobley is one practiced suggestion!).

JUROR: “From the fishing villages of Alaska to the palaces of Croatia, Mobley has traveled the world over to capture and celebrate humanity in its infinite forms.” Paul Mobley’s portraits are rich with intimacy – close-up, straight, real, indicative of the souls behind the eyes.

Mobley began his photographic education at the Detroit Center for Creative Studies. He continued his training through apprenticeships in New York with such greats as Annie Leibovitz and Steve Steigman. He grew his photography into a successful commercial career working for a broad range of corporate, advertising, and editorial clients, including American Express, Sony, Citigroup, Ford, Compaq, Gourmet, Max Factor, Chevrolet, Microsoft, and many others.

Mobley visited over 200 farms and ranches across the United States to collect the over 150 portraits that appear in “American Farmer: Portraits from the Heartland” (2008 by Welcome books). Following the tradition of Richard Avedon’s watershed monograph and Mike Disfarmer’s Heber Sprints series, “American Farmer” is an epic monument to the spirit of rural life through the faces and words of those who sustain and nurture the land. Mobley’s dedication to the “American Farmer” project, allow him an experienced and practiced eye through which to jury “Down on the Farm.”

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on June 21, 2011.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Dark Room Gallery/Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition on the website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Darkroom Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.
