Remember when ice cream treats came 12 to a box?  Then it was 10.  Then 8.  Now I pay $4.99 for a box of 6.  Does that mean I’ll quit eating ice cream?  Unlikely.  I think this is the same psychology behind cigarette tax too, ha.  Well, at least eggs still come by the dozen. (We won’t even discuss Eggland’s Best new 1/2 dozen cartons.)  Twelve is the perfect number for this next Call too.  A flink to be exact…

Check out this Call for Submissions from Flink12 for the Global Icon Art Competition.  There is no fee to enter, and your work could be viewed by millions if Flink12 turns into the new Facebook.  It is worth a try…

*Editor’s Note:   Do not be alarmed.  My beautifully crafted, sophisticated gourmet image has temporarily bitten the dust to make way for Saturday morning, cartoon-like graphics.  We will return to your regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

FREE, but ODD

The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is Fugu, also known as Japanese pufferfish.  What was strange was that I ate it in the USVI at the hands of a Japanese Chef who sold me on eating it BECAUSE #1 it was FREE and #2 it could kill me if prepared improperly.  No meal is worth dying for, folks; ahhh, the stupidity of being eighteen.  Well, clearly, I didn’t die, and unfortunately, I don’t really remember the taste due to my adrenaline-fueled expectation that I could, at any moment, drop dead.  In hindsight, I don’t REALLY know what I ate. Hmmm.  This next call for art may be the strangest of its sort I’ve ever seen as well–at least for an Art Exhibit.  Take a look…

Saint Spotting

Learn more about Saint Spoting online! On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of St. Mary Joseph Rossello (1811 – 1880), the Institute of the Daughters of Mercy announces an international contest to bring to light the work of the founder, Mother Mary Joseph, born near Savona, Italy, and proclaimed Saint in 1949 for her incessant actions to assist the needy and promote social integration through the creation of educational and health institutes.

Creative people, such as filmmakers, photographers, cartoonists, graphic and fashion designers, songwriters, musicians, etc… are asked to promote a product which is most definitely unusual.  The challenge for creative artists worldwide is to create advertising for a SAINT, as if it is a product just like any other product in need of an ad campaign.

“WE’RE SEEKING a way to advertise a Saint with an unusual perspective, not necessarily religious, focusing primarily on the historical figure of this great woman, Mother Mary Joseph Rossello .”

I typically only post once per day.  Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space.  I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for.  So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today?  Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog.  Last Monday I posted a housekeeping blog, earlier this morning I posted the Artist of the Year blog, and tommorrow I unveil the first Featured Artist of 2011.  That is three non-deadline posts in 8 days.  I just have to break it up with a little opportunity!

Check out this Art Contest from tailcast.com, a print-on-demand greeting card site, that allows you to design and sell a Valentine’s day card online.  There is no entry fee, and you could win $300+ and 20% commission on card sales.  Take a look!

Can you make them

I received a group of Calls for Entries (none of them regional) all from the same organization, the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville (TN).  I have entered two of the four shows before and was juried into both.  I like couldn’t pass on the opportunity for you, but I also didn’t want to get the email suggesting I’m playing favorites by covering the same gallery 4 times in a couple of weeks.  My solution?  Here are four of the Calls for Art Entries in abbreviated fashion:

RETRO ART CONTEST: Spirograph

Click to Subscribe to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!I love the sort of fun whimsy of the design of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.  And as a parent, I love the variety of opportunities that were provided in that era to sneak the principles of design, color and competition into your children’s lives through play.   Just add a Twinkie, and this next call for art entries from Sound Feelings Publishing would be a perfect combination or whimsy and design!

Can you Design Something better than this?

Spirograph Multicolor Design Art Contest!Sound Feelings Publishing is inviting submissions of beautiful designs to be Included in a Brand New Multi-Color Instruction Booklet for the Famous Spirograph Toy from the 1960s.

Using your 1967-1970 Kenner Spirograph toy (not Spirograph Plus or any other variant) and using a new Spirograph Multicolor Pen from Sound Feelings Publishing, create one or more BRAND NEW DESIGNS and submit them to Sound Feelings for their consideration to be included in their new, upcoming “Spirograph Multicolor Instruction Booklet.”

The winners will receive the prize money and will also have their names listed by their design (unless you prefer not to).

How Would These Designs be Different?

The original Spirograph incorporated pens that had four colors, black, blue, red and green.

Spirograph Mulitcolor Design Art Contest!Sound Feelings is seeking submissions of new designs that use the new Spirograph Multicolor Pen.

These new pens contain the original four colors: black, blue, red and green

But the new pen ALSO includes fun and creative rainbow colors: yellow, light blue, pink, purple, brown, and orange — ten colors in one pen!

The Spirograph Multicolor Pen contains 10 ballpoint cartridges within one large barrel.

The ballpoint pen tips of the cartridges are the EXACT size of the original pen tips that came with your 1960s Spirograph. (Modern ballpoint pens have larger size tips that will not fit through the holes of the Spirograph gears.)

4. Use one or more of the colors in the multicolor pen. (You may use as many colors as you want in your design, but generally, combining a few well-matched colors well will look better than using all ten colors!) Also, you may just want to use the original black, blue, red or green colors in your design and that would be completely fine.

5. Scan your completed design at 300 dpi or higher and save in .jpg format, at the highest quality. If you don’t have a scanner, you can mail the original to us and we will scan it and return your original to you.

6. Create instructions that follow the same format as the original instruction booklet so others may re-create your design.
