RE: Tale

Everybody has a story to tell. We are constantly creating tales in our heads. They might be our own doing, they might be partially vicarious or perhaps completely borrowed. These accounts often get restructured and retold, evolving each time. This is not unlike contemporary art, which by nature constantly strives for reinterpretation.

Fitting the concept of something that is partially untrue in a gallery called “Non-Fiction” seems to be ill-fitting. However, borrowing from the gallery’s vision statement, everybody’s tales, whether personal or fictitious, “inspire life-changing dialogue.” After all, Aesop never needed a true story to communicate his vision.

In today’s contemporary art scene, artists have deconstructed the idea of a story to fit their medium and surface preferences. This juried exhibition strives to showcase the breadth of interpretations of the concept of “visual storytelling.”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Open to all media

JUROR: The show will be juried by a combination of Non-Fiction delegates and guest juror MAC, originator of the RE: Tale concept & show. The only thing missing from California cuisine is butter. It is characterized by local, fresh ingredients and foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast with special attention paid to presentation–delicious & beautiful. But why leave out the butter? And, if it is from local, grass-fed cows, even better. Can’t we just learn to play well with others? There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words. Food deprivation is not new to me. In the South, women are born dieters, as was I for half my years. I no longer participate, opting for whole foods and a healthier self image. But, I was still dumbfounded when I read a study that proposes eating from a red dish, as opposed to the white ones I currently use, might result in smaller consumption. I tried one many years ago and remember the flavors of lemon, banana and cucumber, but because they are exceedingly rare, I can’t find one locally. 3×3 Magazine is entering its ninth year judging the world’s best contemporary illustration judged by some of the world’s top art directors, designers and illustrators.

Unlike many shows they have no boundaries, their entrants come from every part of the globe. They are still one of the best values around when it comes to entry fees and publication fees. And they continue to improve their entry process.

And unlike most show annuals that are on the bookshelves 3×3 Magazine’s annuals are prominently displayed on the newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where they are affordable to art directors and art buyers who may or may not be interested in illustration. There has been dramatic growth in the number of outlets stocking the 3×3 Magazine annual and the sales to art directors.

It is their mission to demonstrate the benefits of using illustration, this annual is their showcase.

Growing up, meat was the focal point of all meal preparation. Everything revolved around how long the meatloaf, turkey, fried chicken etc. had to cook. Every plate had to be picture perfect–1/2 meat (it is the South afterall), 1/4 starch (usually potatoes), 1/4 vegetable (often fried).
