We are often given gifts that are unsightly, unseemly, or straight out of a nightmare. Often these “gifts” stay with us, sometimes for the better. The gifts we never wanted take many forms, both physically and emotionally. In the end we have to ask—are gifts given for the sender or the receiver?

For the exhibition The Gift You Never Wanted, Non-Fiction Gallery seeks works of art that explore the idea of the gift as a burden or a blessing.

Food oddities abound –from century eggs to snake wine. But I find the biggest food oddity is the waste of food in massive, organized food fights. How do you use tons of food to make a mess when it could be feeding someone? I don’t understand. I suppose that some make an argument that food art is also a waste; however, I think the difference in scale might be the defining factor. JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. His work has also been included in numerous nat’l & int’l group shows. His photographs are included in a number of private & public collections. He has been the recipient of various grants & awards including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant in 1999 and, in 2000, his 2nd NY State Council on the Arts Grant.

I have plastic envy. Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost. Last year our first snow came in October. Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather. Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project. My house hangs on the side of a mountain. The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha. The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks. I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass. That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg. Now my cravings for hot chocolate come about through all the standard means–a chill in the air, holiday decorations, a simple sweet tooth. CURATOR: Mona Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

AWARDS: The number of billboards will vary depending on the number of submissions received, the availability of viable billboards & current market prices for those billboards. Viable billboards mean that they exist in well-traveled (car and foot traffic) locations. All billboards will include the artist’s name. JUROR: Sherrie Riley Hawk graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Accounting & minor degree in Art History. She opened the Riley Hawk Gallery in 1986 specializing in Glass Art. In 2004, Hawk decided to embrace all 3-dimensional art forms & opened a new gallery to exhibit ceramics, wood, fiber & art jewelry. Sherrie Gallerie has participated in nat’l exhibitions throughout the country. Hawk has been invited to jury countless museum exhibitions and art fairs. Sherrie Gallerie mounts at least 10 solo shows a year and is committed to representing the best artists in their fields.

AWARDS: All work selected by the Juror and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be included in the Cardinal Health Gallery. Artists will be invited to an Artist Reception. My family enjoys participating in cultural celebrations from around the world. None of us grew up with any sort of specific cultural traditions aside from spaghetti night or BBQ on Father’s Day. So each year we adopt Chinese New Year, Oktoberfest & even the Day of the Dead as our very own. Chinese New Year gives us an extra 6 weeks or so to make plans for the upcoming year (Yes, we really are late to everything –even making resolutions, ha). Dia de Los Muertos offers us a time to tell stories about those we’ve lost. I’ve lost a lot of people lately, and it is a great comfort to take time to celebrate them.
