THE JOY OF DISCOVERY

One of the joys posting for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com is opening my email and receiving Calls that you just know will be the golden egg in some artist’s Easter egg hunt.

I love being a part of new beginnings–both for artists and for galleries.  My experience is that gallery directors are (at least at the beginning of a project) hopeful–even expectant–of what is to come.

My experience is also that artists spend a lot of time (at least in the beginning) hopeful–even expectant–that a gallery director is going to fall in love with their work.

Visit the Bond Street Studio online! The joy if this post is that it may–just maybe– fulfill the hope of both for a handful of my readers.  The deadline is July 18th…DO NOT MISS this opportunity!

Times Square is one of the world’s most renowned urban destinations. Its dazzling lights and teeming crowds offer an overwhelming sense of possibility. Having helped to make Times Square clean and safe, the Times Square Alliance is now working to nurture the creativity, energy and edge that are the essence of Times Square.

For that reason, they are working with a variety of arts-based curatorial groups to bring public art projects to Times Square.   Times Square Arts, their pilot public art program, will incorporate diverse art elements into Times Square’s streetscape, thereby expressing the area’s uniqueness and enriching the pedestrian experience.

Open call to Artists for Times Square!

The Times Square Alliance seeks letters of interest from arts organizations and artists across disciplines to present contemporary art projects and art events in the public spaces in and around Times Square.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Functional Art

Click Here to Subscribe to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by email!I know a large number of artists that take great pride in the fact that their work is not “retail art,” and I know quite a handful of artists are proud to have their work sell in retail galleries because they can make a living doing what they love. If you are looking for a way to bridge the gap between fine art and the retail world, consider functional art as an option. Here’s a great call for functional art:

Call for entries

The Art of Applied Design is open to all applied artists age 18 or above, working in the U.S. and abroad.  There is no limit on the number of objects that may be entered.  Entries must be original one-of-a-kind works of the submitter, completed within the preceding three years (2007 to 2010), and be represented by high quality digital images.

Click Here for the full Call for Entries!Evaluation will be based upon the creative uniqueness and originality of the work, evidence of excellence in craftsmanship, and quality of the photographic images provided by the artist/designer.

Exhibition of accepted work will include notation of the artist’s name, country of residence, and e-mail address to facilitate the independent sales of exhibited work.

One entry in each material category will be selected for recognition as Best of Show for that category.

Eligibility:

All submitted works must be functional objects typically used within interior spaces that also exhibit unique, innovative, inspirational, creative artistry.  Submitters must identify the primary material from which a work is constructed.  Entries will be evaluated against others made from that same material.

Click Here for the full Call for Entries!Acceptable material categories are fiber (including paper), wood, metal, clay, and glass/plastic.  Examples of appropriate objects include furnishings (hard and soft), utensils, containers, fixtures, and other objects that enhance function and physical comfort within interior spaces.  Works selected for display within the DHM Digital Gallery will exhibit nontraditional, innovative design.

Not eligible for submission are the fine arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.); objects that are purely decorative; works that are representative of functional objects but are not, themselves, functional; photography; video; architecture or architectural drawings; graphic designs; lighting designs (i.e., the projection of illumination in space); or functional objects not typically used within interior spaces.

Images:

Only high quality digital jpg images will be accepted. We recommend at least 300 dpi, with no more than 2048 pixels (and no less than 900 pixels).  Only one image per submission, illustrating the total object, should be submitted.  Additional images of any one submitted object will not be viewed.

The DHM Digital Gallery will retain and modify the submitted images of accepted artwork for the purpose of using those images in publications and gallery publicity.  Submission of images to this exhibit constitutes permission for future use (and modification, when necessary) of those images by the DHM Digital Gallery for the above stated purposes.

CD submissions will not be returned.  Each digital image should be identified in the following manner:

lastname.firstname.abbreviatedtitle.numberonentryform

Example:   Smith.Jane.HeartfeltSong.6.jpg

Click Here for the Functional Art Call for Entries!Entry Rules:

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Wearable Art

Subscribe to ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email! All of you know that I have a food “thing”–which, in theory, explains why this art blog is food themed.  However, my Sunday morning confession is…I have a shoe and hat “thing” too.  I love them and all fashion.  And, I am willing to suffer to wear them.  Art is art whether you can wear it or whether you have to keep it in a climate-controlled museum-like environment.  To that end, here’s s great call for Wearable Art:

For many of you, it has been a long time.  But I want to challenge you…to let this theme challenge you.  I don’t often double post in one day, but here is a Call for Entries for the Grand Opening ceremonies for Knoxville Station Transit Center.

This call IS national, not local.  No Entry fee, but you will have to ship your work both ways.  Take a look.  The theme is complicated, but I don’t think it necessarily requires a working knowledge of Knoxville, TN.  Check it out:

INSPIRATION: Grafitti

Click Here to Subscribe to ArtandArtDeadlines.com by Email!I have a lot on my mind…
change, specifically.

It is time for a little change.

On September 12th, ArtAndArtDeadlines.com will officially be one year old.  And the site has survived a number of changes, I think it is time for a few more.  Here are a few ideas of my own, but feel free to leave a comment with your own suggestions too:

1.  New Sponsors.  I am going to take a closer look at the way sponsorships work here at AAAD.  I want to make sure my links are going where they will best support the art and artists that are talented and inspired.

2. A Makeover.  I have been inspired by the recent Toni’s Treehouse makeover (AAAD is a sponsor) to make a few visual changes to the header and sidebars.  These will be gradual, I promise.

3. Showcases.  I was recently inspired by a Tweet of Catherine Roach‘s new business cards, of all things, to showcase a handful of things that some folks do really well.  For example, most of the graphic designers and illustrators out there have phenomenally creative business cards.  It is a networking opportunity for those featured and hopefully an inspiration for my readers.

Click here to see the prospectus! So if you have more suggestions, let me know by leaving a comment.  In the meantime, while I was contemplating what sort of art would newly reside behind the “Art” in the header, I thought of grafitti as an option.  Then, like kismet, I tripped across the call for entries…inspired by grafitti.  Here’s the call:

artspace announces an open call to all artists working in any medium to submit entries for Strassen Kunst, an international exhibition of work inspired by graffiti. The exhibition juror, Martin McFadden LRPS, Director and Curator, 12 12 Gallery, Richmond, Virginia, will award up to $1000 and a solo exhibition in artspace’s Helena Davis Gallery.

Visit artspace online!ELIGIBILITY International artists age 18+, working in 2D or 3D whose work consists of or is inspired by any aspect of graffiti, including painting, tagging, stenciling, etc., may submit 3 digital images of work to be considered for the exhibition. Additional images may be submitted at additional cost, for up to a total of 5 works. Work that has been previously exhibited at artspace is not eligible.

ENTRY PROCEDURE Entrants may submit ONLY digital images on CD or online. Only one digital image may be submitted for each work. Diptychs or triptychs must be on one image. Limit size of framed work to 60 inches, in either direction, and up to 65 lbs. Space limitations do not allow for installations of work. Digital files for viewing should be JPG format at 300 ppi, saved at 10-12 quality level, with the longest dimension being 1900 pixels. Label each file with the last name, first initial, and the number corresponding to the entry number (e.g. SmithJ1). Please identify images on the entry form with the title of the work.

Installment 3:
Black and White Photography

I live in an area with a long-standing artisan crafts tradition, and I overhear a lot of conversation about how digital and “new-fangled” media will be the end of art as we know it.  As you might imagine, as a Xerographist, I couldn’t disagree more.  Artist Jerry Portelli and I even went so far as to create a series of square pieces in celebration of the pixel.  So, I find this call from the MPLS Photo Center fascinating.  Take a look…

Here is a great call for the photographer in us all…
Black & White Photgraphy Call for Entries from the MPLS Photo Center

Black & White Photography at MPLS!“Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.” – Robert Frank

What does “black and white” mean to contemporary photographers in the digital age? When Robert Frank made this observation, black-and-white film and silver prints were photography’s most commonly used materials. Nearly a half century later they are approaching “alternative media” status. Or are they? Are the implications and meanings of black and white still central to photography’s unique nature as a visual medium?

Submissions to this juried exhibition are limited only by your imagination and your photographic eye. Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscapes, documentary, conceptual – all of these genres, and others not named, are open for consideration.

MPLS Photo Center

Prints should take whatever form they need to in order to represent the continuum of tones, including gray tone, warm tone, cool tone, sepia, or other monochromes that comprise your photographs. Whether the initial recording was made on film or pixels is immaterial. However, in the final assessment, prints will be judged on their merits. Qualities of form, content, and relation to traditions of black-and-white printing and visualization will be sought in the pool of submissions.

He was the artistic director of Minnesota Center for Photography (2003-2008) and the director of the McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program (1998-2008). His writings have been published widely; he received a 2007 award from the Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers grant program. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Digital Art

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by Email!I get a lot of email, queries and facebook comments as to the legitimacy of the calls I post.  And, while I understand that one rotten apple can spoil the barrel.  Rest assured, I make every effort to sniff out the bad apples.  To my knowledge, I have never post a fraudulent or scam call.  Let me know if I ever do.

On that note, I am always hesitant to post calls for online exhibitions because they tend to strike my readers as a way to lose their cash for little benefit in return.  However I must say, I am a big fan of art organizations that lay it all out there.  Take today’s call for example.

Austin Museum of Digital Art The Austin Museum of Digital Art says, “Since AMODA currently has no permanent exhibition space, there are some types of visual art that are more practical for us to present than others. In particular, we are seeking artwork to display in our Digital Showcase Series.  The Digital Showcase is a one night only event featuring live electronic music and visual art in a social setting, such as a bar or nightclub.”  I get it, and I appreciate the fact that the call isn’t hidden in some vague archaic language.

Austin is known for its innovative art vision, and I love the idea of bringing art to the public instead of coercing the public to come see art.  Here’s the call:

Check out the Digital Showcase concept!VISUAL ART

The Austin Museum of Digital Art is open to receiving a wide range of visual art submissions, including anything that they would define as digital art. Please see their About Digital Art page for more information.

“However, since AMODA currently has no permanent exhibition space, there are some types of visual art that are more practical for us to present than others. In particular, we are seeking artwork to display in our Digital Showcase Series. The Digital Showcase is a one night only event featuring live electronic music and visual art in a social setting, such as a bar or nightclub.”
