Generic versus name brand and heirloom versus genetically-modified and cheese food versus cheese. The debates over what makes the grade and what doesn’t will NEVER end. In my kitchen, I read labels and I buy the very best quality that I can afford at the moment. I steer clear of any foods with scary ingredient lists, and I cross my fingers and hope my family enjoys their dinner. This Call is all about the subjective question “is it good enough?” Say some affirmations in the mirror and take the leap…

Check out this Open Call from CultureHall.com, a curated online resource for contemporary art. This isn’t a come-one, come-all, pay your cash for exposure site. You have to make the cut based on your own merit. Do you have what it takes?

CALL for ENTRIES: Edges & Curves

When I think of the foods of my youth, I think of… Banquet Fried Chicken.  I know, I know.  I was reared by my father, alone, between the ages of 3 and 13, and we ate anything and everything pre-packaged or ready-made that we could because I did all the cooking from age 5 up.  Do not send me letters about child labor or processed food, please; it was not a choice… it just was. Oddly enough, I suspect my child will remember granola bars and french bread pizza as the foods of his youth.  Wonder if I’ve really made much of an improvement, ha.  This next Call has me wondering what the food of my 40’s will be.  Any suggestions?

Check out this Call for Entries from The Haggus Society for Edges & Curves at The Glass Studio in Highland Park, CA.  The entry fee is only $12 for 6 images; however, there are age restrictions.  Take a look…

Edges & Curves

Edges & Curves, Nothing In Between attempts to bust the myth that the older creative has lost her or his edge.

In a youth oriented society, the conventional wisdom is that the younger artist is the risk taker and rule breaker. And while those who would follow conventional wisdom believe we soften as we get older, there are those who actually hone their edges to craft a message with more bite and risk because of their station in life.

ELIGIBILITY: This event is open to any artist 40 years and older.

Missouri makes me think of German sausage.  Did you know that Ozark Mountain country (partially located in southern Missouri) was widely settled by Germans that brought their own culinary traditions?  To this day,  Hermann’s Wurstfest celebrates this culinary transplant every year.  You know the saying, “you made your bed, now lie in it?”  I prefer the German version: “Die Wurst nach dem Manne braten” — every man fries his own sausage.  Check out this Call for Entries from Missouri…

STICKY SWEET

When I think of salt water taffy, I think of the mountains. Odd, eh? I suspect that salt water taffy got its start on seaside boardwalks, but it seems every small mountain town has a great little store front that lets you watch taffy being made. I know that here in Gatlinburg, there is more than one. I wonder if Blue Ridge, GA (home of this Call) has a taffy shop. Sounds like a great reason to attend the reception…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild for their Annual National Juried Show which will be exhbiited in the Richard Low Evans Gallery in Blue Ridge, GA, one of “America’s Top Art Communities.” I know that discussing art sales is like talking about religion or politics in polite company (in bad taste), but I will say it anyway… this could be a great opportunity to sell some artwork.
