CALL for PROPOSALS: Public Art

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!CHIPPING away

My son has recently decided to try to break a Guinness World Record, but he can’t figure out which one (he’s 13).  It takes all the self-control to not suggest that he make the world’s largest chocolate chip cookie.  This next call will resort in only a 10 foot circle; I suspect that is far to small for the world’s largest cookie.  Nonetheless, this is a great opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Warrensburg Arts Commission (WAC) for Public Art Design Proposals.  The entry fee is cheap, and unlike many public art calls, this is not limited to sculpture.  Take a closer work…

ELIGIBILITY:  This is an open competition for non-professional and professional artists.  A team of artists is welcome to apply, and multiple applications are allowed.

MEDIA:  2 Dimensional work.  There is no pre-determined theme for artwork, but WAC suggests that the content reflect the vibrancy of downtown, the beauty of the region, and the energy of the Arts and Entertainment District.

Sponsored in part by the Warrensburg Missouri Arts Commission! DEADLINE:  September 1, 2012

NOTIFICATION:  September 7, 2012

ENTRY FEE:  $20 for 1 to 3 images

SELECTION PROCESS:  The Warrensburg Arts Commission and the City of Warrensburg will select one design based on creativity, appropriateness, and practicality for implementation.

AWARDS:  A prize of $500 will be awarded for the chosen design. The award funds are made available through the WAC and the City of Warrensburg.

HOT!

I have a soft spot for spicy foods. I regularly tell the folks at my favorite Thai restaurant that it isn’t hot enough if my scalp isn’t glistening.  My son, on the other hand, thinks all forms of peppers are the devil.  Mild salsa is an adventure for him…for now.  This next Call wants your take on Angels and Demons, but for the record, paintings of peppers might not be the right take on demons. Take a look…

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

I recently likened my self to eggplant and broccoli for my vegetable alter ego options.  The emails have been greatly entertaining, and in one case, very flattering.  One of you out there thinks I am foie gras…and you weren’t even trying to get me to pick you as this month’s Featured Artist.  Flattery and food are perfectly good reasons to write this blog every day; I promise.  This next Call wants to see your definition of a portrait.  Eggplant and brussel sprouts are now officially up for grabs…

I learned table manners in “finishing” class.  No, I am not kidding.  I went to a southern, Protestant private school through sixth grade.  All 5th grade girls took “finishing class” in which we learned posture by walking with books on our heads.  We learned that our waist should be 10″ smaller than our bust and hips.  And we learned both how to set a table and how to behave while sitting at the table.  No really, I’m not kidding.  And while I have clearly let go of the 10″-smaller-than-my-bust-and-hips lesson, I still find bad table manners offensive.  This next show is looking for something a little more extreme, I suspect.  Whatcha got, folks?

Just the other day, I admitted my food stereotypes about Phoenix.  I’ll continue today with Texan food stereotypes.  I think steak or Tex-Mex.  All things Mexican or Spanish, right?  I never thought of chicken fried steak.  Chicken fried steak is considered German, a derivative of Wiener Schnitzel, a veal steak deep-fried in a breadcrumb batter. In chicken fried steak, beef scraps are used and beaten into steak form.  A milk-based cream gravy is almost always served with chicken fried steak too.  Yes, folks…Welcome to Texas.  Okay, I did my research on Texas.  This next call will require you to do a little Texas research as well before creating your artwork.  Take a look…

UMMYYUMMY

I am not a fan of baby talk.  I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone.  However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme.  I have not excuse.  None.  And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

DIPLOMACY STINKS

It is a happy, shiny New Year, and I am excited about the possibilities.  Per usual, I am optimistic about the future… nauseatingly optimistic, according to my husband Jon.  However, most folks will also tell you that my attitude toward life is often like my taste in food…direct, unapologetic and undiplomatic.  Can food be unapologetic and undiplomatic?  Have you ever met a cheese named Limberger?  That sort of straight forwardness is what drew me to this next Call.

SCROLL BOWL V will be the featured event at The 22 Magazine Launch Party, on April 2nd, 2011.  Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment.  Scroll art is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and the folks at The 22 Magazine want to make the experience of viewing a scroll more accessible to everyday life.

Check out the Scrollie Viewer on YouTube!MEDIA:  There are many different ways to approach art on scrolls, and they ask artists to push those limits-linear storytelling to abstract ideas.

From the organizers:  “What this [change of venue] means for the artists is 1) A week long show instead of one night  2) documentation of the actual event via 4-7 installed cameras  3) live streaming of the event online and  4) more space and much nicer venue. ”
