There was a time when I was scared of asparagus. No, really. My only childhood exposure to asparagus was with the canned variety–grayish green, slimy, salty, icky. I managed to go a span of TWO DECADES without eating it again. I had developed such a taste aversion that irrationally, somewhere in the back of my brain, I thought consuming it would have dire consequences. Luckily, someone served me cream of asparagus soup under the guise of cream of broccoli soup, and now I am addicted. Blanched and marinated in balsamic vinigrette then served cold…I could eat it every day. This next call seeks to explore YOUR fears. Anybody want to talk about bloody beets?

My dogs love raw potatoes. I don’t get it. They love lots of raw veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, romaine spines…and potatoes. Now, I’m not one of those dog owners that feeds my dogs Doritos or junk food, but I must admit that when I’m cooking, they DO make great garbage disposals for veggie scraps. Poignant photography of rescued dogs. This is the Rest in Show, because these animals are the best, whether they’re purebred or mutts!

This exhibition will take place at the same time as the big Eukanuba National Championship Dog Show at the Long Beach Convention Center.

These submissions must accompany a heartfelt story about the animal who is photographed as it will be posted next to the photograph – -break their hearts!

The Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2011, 5:30-9:00 p.m. at 2699 E. 28th Street, Suite 416, Signal Hill, CA 90755.

I have to admit that my Australian food experience has been lacking over the years. However, a Chef named Jason introduced me to Vegemite this Spring. Like you probably, my only previous experience with Vegemite was the Men At Work song. Traditionally, this paste made from a by-product of beer-brewing and is eaten on buttered toast. Photo Contest

Photographer Paul Mobley traveled the country documenting America’s unsung heroes of industry and agriculture in his book: “American Farmer: Portraits of the Heartland”. What began as a break from his commercial photography soon became a journey which led Mobley down a path of self-discovery with a renewal in his passion for making images.

Mobley’s work for American Farmer was recently optioned for presentation as a feature-length documentary. The film goes deep into our nation’s agricultural heartland to tell the personal stories of the indomitable men and women who literally sustain us all. Dubbed “American Farmer” by its producers, the documentary will launch followed by a national PBS broadcast.

Mobley would like you to share your experiences with the country’s beautiful agriculture, farm, farmer’s market and garden world. Capturing your favorite fall harvest scene, summer fruit stand, farmer’s market or road-side stand, share your view this country’s beautiful landscape, agriculture and harvest. Contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers from across the country.

What food helps you get to sleep quickly? Well, honestly, almost any food helps me sleep because I am usually so exhausted that I can fall sleep after eating virtually anything. The idea of warm milk is pretty nauseating, and I’ve never developed a taste for hot tea, either. I have friends that swear by melatonin supplements, and a few that are addicted to over-the-counter PM drugs. Those drugs give me a hangover, and melatonin just doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t eat pine.

I enjoy the occasional Murder Mystery Dinner show, but I never want the mystery to be WHAT I am eating. I have fairly adventurous taste in food, but I still want the courtesy of knowing what I am putting in my mouth. For some reason, more than one chef has said to me, “I made it special for you, just try it.” 99% of the time they are right; however, for the occasional 1%, I have this to say to the chef, “If you had just TOLD me there were pine nuts in the wild boar dish, I could have spared you the public “ick” face when I tried it.” So there. Masters Mystery

The Masters’ Mystery Art Show (MMAS) is an international annual art event featuring over 1000 artworks by more than 500 artists from 31 countries around the globe. It includes nationally and internationally recognized artists, many brilliant emerging artists, as well as a number of celebrities from other fields. The MMAS was developed to benefit Florida International University’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Program. This event coincides with Art Basel and takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Miami Beach.

The list of contributing artists, including a host of well-established names, will be widely publicized in advance. Adding to the excitement will be the participation of renowned celebrities in different disciplines and selected local students will compliment the roster. The “mystery” is that the name of the artist for each work is kept secret during the exhibition, only to be revealed at the completion of the sale. Thus the public is invited to “play detective” as they try to identify the artist – and be the first to buy the best!

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All exhibited works will be originals in a 6” x 9” format and will sell for the fixed price of $50.

DEADLINE: Submitted artwork must be received by November 15th, 2011.

Sometimes it take me multiple tries to learn a lesson. For example, I am not a good baker. It has taken many failed attempts at breads, muffins and biscuits for me to come to grips with this unfortunate reality. And lately, the same is true with art. Mystery of Man is a multi-media exhibition open to all artists. Mystery of Man seeks to revive the classicist notion that both art and science are mediums of understanding. Throughout history, societies have employed both mediums to negotiate ideas of self and the meaning of existence. -Why are we here?
-What is reality?
-How do we interpret the self?

JURORS: As Executive Director of OVAC since 1999, Julia Kirt has worked to create resources for rural, urban, emerging and experienced artists and transform Oklahoma’s valuation of artists. She was honored as the “Emerging Leader” by the Americans for the Arts in 2008 and participated in the 2009 Leadership Institute organized by the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation. Kirt completed an MA in Art History at the University of Oklahoma and earned a BA in Communication Studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.

Kelly Foshee received her MFA from the University of Tulsa in 2002. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. For many years, she has served as a teaching artist for the Philbrook Museum of Art, as well as an adjunct instructor of printmaking at the University of Tulsa. She currently works as the studio art and art history instructor for the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences.

While Satellite Galleries are primarily an exhibition space,

I prefer immediate gratification, be it chocolate or laundry. I simply don’t like to wait. That is one of the many reasons that I don’t bake chocolate soufflés–because I cannot handle the agony of seeing if it will turn out beautiful and puffed or flat and dreary. I lose enthusiasm for the whole laundry process during the dry time too (not that I am generally very enthused about it to start with). Although, I will take soufflé baking over laundry any day of the week. This next Call is a perfect opportunity for you to contemplate the passage of time, and not just of food and laundry. Think about it…

Time is an essential element of science, philosophy, and religion. Nonetheless its definition has continuously eluded the greatest minds. For In Time, The Kiernan Gallery welcomes images that interpret and define Time as subject matter, whether it be in a historical context of the then and now, time lapse, events and the interval between them, of a crucial moment, preserved for eternity. In a sense, every photograph is an embodiment of time.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

ENTRY FEE:

JUROR: Blake Fitch received her BFA on full scholarship from Pratt Institute (1994), with a major in photography and a minor in photo history. She earned her MA in Arts Administration from Boston University in 2001. Documentary in nature, Fitch’s work has focused on the human condition, including themes of: identiry, rites of passage, civil rights, belonging and the investigation of community in third world countries. Her work has been described as graceful and confident. The quality and breadth of her imagery has enabled her to receive a variety of grants and sponsorships including support from Kodak and Calumet Photographic. Her work has been exhibited internationally and held in the collections of numerous museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Worcester Art Museum, and the George Eastman House of Photography.

AWARDS: The juror will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, as well as up to an additional 40 for display in the online gallery. All accepted photographs are eligible for inclusion in a full color exhibition catalogue available for purchase from Blurb Books.

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.
