PICNIC TIME!

I love picnics. Many of you probably conjure images of pretty blankets stretched on soft green grass and baskets of sandwiches and summer’s ripest fruits. Well, me too. But here in the Smoky Mountains, our first picnic excursion of the year is usually AT NIGHT. During the Synchronous Firefly celebration. For two weeks in mid-june, my night sky is lit by the synchronized flashing of fireflies. It is truly unbelievable. This Call encourages you to capture what you LOVE about the night sky! Don’t miss this chance…

The entry fee is standard, but you’re allowed to send details…even of two-dimensional work. For those of you wanting to add Arizona to your resume, this is a GREAT opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES:
Night Visions IV

Artists are encouraged to submit work that explores or celebrates the night sky, or the stars. The work in this exhibit should reflect the deep, positive connection that human beings can have with the night. Night Visions IV Exhibit will be part of Celebrations of the Night.

This year, Night Visions IV will coincide with the 53rd Anniversary of the International Dark Skies movement, which began in Flagstaff in 1958. Night Visions is a partnership between the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition and Flagstaff Cultural Partners.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

MEDIA: Artists may submit work in any media, 2d or 3d. All art forms- literature, photography, video, installation, etc. – are welcome.

DEADLINE: July 27, 2011

NOTIFICATION: September 1, 2011

ENTRY FEE: A $35 Entry fee covers the submission of up to 3 works of art. Two images per work may be submitted. Please make your check payable to Flagstaff Cultural Partners.

JURORS: Photographer Joe Cornett Jr., Astronomer Chris Luginbuhl, Painter Alan Peterson and ceramic Sculptor Paula Rice.

AWARDS: Prizes will be awarded for best of show ($1000), Second Place ($500), & Third Place ($250).

When sending in your Calls for Entries, entries for the $2 Art Contest or for ANY show. Be professional, but above all else… be nice. CALL to ARTISTS: Art Kudos

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com! Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

MEDIA: Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, installations, wood, glass, ceramics, fiber art and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly, from any published or copyrighted work. Work previously shown in an Art Kudos exhibition is ineligible. Please do not submit images which would be inappropriate for general audiences.

DEADLINE: June 30, 2011

NOTIFICATION: August 1, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a completed entry form and pay a non-refundable entry fee of $30 US dollars (check, money order, or PayPal) to submit 3 images. For sculptural or three-dimensional pieces, artists may submit 2 views of each work (for a total of 6 images).

JUROR: Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

McCullough spearheaded the publication of the Telfair’s first collection catalogue, and has organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from modern silverpoint drawings to contemporary Southeastern art, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American art, including the recent Dutch Utopia exhibition. She holds a B. A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011. Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

COMMISSION: No commissions are taken for sales generated via the exhibition, and works submitted do not have to be available for sale. Sales will be encouraged, however, and artists will have the option to display their contact information beside their images.

OPEN CALL:
Spiva Art Gallery

Missouri Southern State University’s Art Department is inviting artists via an Open Call to submit proposals for the campus Spiva Art Gallery. The Gallery’s Advisory Board selects works and collections for exhibition. The Gallery hosts approximately eight shows per year, including one or more group shows by local guilds or artist collectives, themed exhibits, and solo shows. They have a standing Call to Artists who wish to submit their works for consideration.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Open to all media

ENTRY FEE: None

DEADLINE: Ongoing

SUBMISSIONS: Artists can send a packet of information by U.S. mail or electronically. Applications sent by mail should provide the Advisory Board with a proposal for exhibition, including: (1) A cover letter or email (2) Artist’s biography / resume (3) Samples of work submitted for consideration.

Spiva possesses a large permanent study collection of African art and artifacts and hosts an active program of international, regional, and student exhibitions of visual art. The gallery’s African Holdings are made up of these individual collections:

When you invite someone for dinner, have you noticed how after the first bite they always say, “Mmmmmm.” I’m suspicious. Not everyone is a Chef; I think people sometimes just want to be polite. Being polite is not always available to gallery owners and directors. Are you ready to move into the international market, and exhibit your work in one of the most significant centers of the art world? This may be the next natural stage for your career as a fine artist, whether you are building on the local success that you have already experienced or simply because your work does not fit into local venues and requires a much more sophisticated audience.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

NOTIFICATION: Usually 2 to 4 weeks

COSTS: No cost to submit your portfolio. However, options for representation start from $2950 which can be paid in six installments of $540 each. Please note that many of the artists that they represent renew their agreement after the first year. I feel left out of the coffee revolution. I love coffee cake and coffee ice cream, just not the cup o’ joe. I’m not crazy about the smell of coffee in my house in the morning though. Clearly, it isn’t genetic. My mother drinks coffee from sunrise to sunset. And, she’s always in search of the perfect coffee cup. She wants one big enough that constant refills aren’t necessary but not so big that the coffee gets cold before you can drink it. National Cup Show 2011

The National Cup Show is an exhibit that highlights the many diverse interpretations of the cup. Both functional and sculptural, this utilitarian object has been part of daily life for centuries. This event helps to promote contemporary ceramic artists and to celebrate the creativity and endless interpretations of the simple form: a cup.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all U.S. ceramic artists, age 18 and over. Work completed within the last 2 years is eligible. No student projects or work completed in class will be accepted.

MEDIA: All works submitted should be 90% clay. Both functional and non-functional pieces are welcome.

DEADLINE: Friday, August 12, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.

During her last year of graduate school, Yam worked for the Foundation for the National Archives. In her spare time she continues to create work at David Freeberg’s studio in McLean, VA.

Photography likes to break out of the studio and inhabit the world. Few things artists do are as immediately engaged with the dynamics of life and the environment as photography. Cameras have been on the bottom of the ocean and on the surface of the moon. They’ve seen everything, from weddings to wars, and they’ve augmented almost every attempt to understand life and our place in it. Where in the World: People, Places and Events will bring together a diverse group of photographers that interrogate the individuals, environments, and actions that comprise our universe.

JUROR: Toby Kamp is currently Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection, Houston, has organized solo exhibitions by artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Ellsworth Kelly, Tim Lee, Vanessa Beecroft, Martin Kersels and many more.

A graduate of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art and the Getty Museum Leadership Institute, Kamps has written on contemporary art and artists for numerous exhibition catalogues and magazines. In 2008, The Old Weird America won the award “Best Thematic Museum Show Nationally” from the International Association of Art Critics (AICA/USA). Prior to his CAMH appointment, Kamps was Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Maine College of Art, Portland; and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

AWARDS: First Place – $400, Second Place – $300, Third Place – $200 and Three Honorable Mentions.

With a strong military influence in the area before the shut down of the military base and the naval yard, international influence on food was pretty common. VERGE emerging art fair will soon announce an extraordinary list of programs for its third year Miami Beach fair, December 2-5, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach, including the Tomorrow Stars Exhibit and The Drawing Show Exhibit. VERGE is THE source for emerging art during ABMB Week, located two short blocks from ABMB and the newly-relocated Design / Miami.
