Did you know that pine needles are edible, sort of? If you love the smell of holiday wreaths and garlands made of fresh pine, you can get that same sense of comfort from tea brewed of pine needles. Be careful NOT to use yew, Norfolk Island Pine or Ponderosa Pine (poisonous) and be sure to forage for your needles to help avoid fertilizers and pesticides. ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Open to any still medium: painting, collage, photography, drawing, digital art, sculpture, fiber art, etc.

THEME: Work should intrigue and fascinate the viewer with their vision and communicate their individual interpretations of plants. The work can reflect on nature’s remarkable abundance and diversity in the wild, a garden, an individual plant and or the beauty or complexity of a single leaf or petal. The art can be expressed from realism to abstraction.

DEADLINE: January 11, 2016

NOTIFICATION: January 21, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $20 for 1, $35 for 3 and $60 for 7

AWARDS: 1st Place $1,000 cash + $5000 marketing value, 2nd Place $250 cash + $1000 marketing value, 3rd place $125, 4th Place $75, 5th Place $50. There will be 10 Honorable Mentions with the artist’s work being displayed in the “Honorable Mentions” section of Art-Competition.net.

Upcycling is close to my heart. As with many, my obsession with the reuse of discarded objects resulted from the collecting of “art supplies”. Consider the previous quotes as air quotes from my bemused husband. Collecting fueled my love for upcycling AND assemblage. Today’s Artist of the Day, Freya Jobbins has such a smart sense of irony & humor. This work is a delightful comment on consumerism and the untouchable nature of the creative object. Mayhaw jelly is the gift that keeps giving. I appreciate receiving foods from all over the U.S., but often those foods aren’t necessarily native to an area — just popular there. But, the mayhaw berry is native to the wetlands, so every time I receive a Louisiana batch, I am transported back to a place I love. You can keep the beignets; just pass the jelly. The written word is my window to art. The written word was my media before the visual or performing ever took hold. Today’s Artist of the Day, Kathleen Probst caught my attention with the simple pillcrow, a proofreader’s mark (¶). I had never been presented with work that made me think of the mark in any other way. Until now. This is thoughtful, considered work. (continues below)

“The symbol for a new paragraph is called an ‘alinea’. It is a french word. One definition of the word alinea is a new train of thought. This design concept is not about holding back, it is about finding just the right amount. Alinea searches for answers on my quest for simplicity. I have a food tattoo. Not surprised, are you? It wasn’t meant to be a food tattoo. I spent a week in NYC while in the area for my grad school interviews. So, I went to the Big Apple and decided the perfect souvenir would be to come home with a little apple. Ridiculous, I know. I’ve thought about expanding on the food theme, but I’d rather spend my money on food than tattoos, ha. Plus, I’m a wimp when it comes to pain. From 2004-2007, she was curator at BCA Center in Burlington, VT, and she received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania.

SALES: All proceeds from art sales go to the artist. Gallery 263 acts as the liaison between the artist and any parties interested in purchasing artwork. However, they do suggest a 30% donation to the gallery from any sales made.

She has found a way to gives us little glimpse of the lives of folks like us…and not. Dark & sweet & funny & sad; idealized & unearthly people & creatures & those that lie between. “I am drawn to stories and lore in all forms… Recurring subjects in my art include ghosts, girls, monsters, and animals, and themes of friendship and loneliness. I like to include bright colors and a sense of humor in my art and enjoy combining elements to humorous effect, such as badgers sporting fezzes or weasels wearing rocket packs. I am also drawn to urban decay, abandoned places, and ghost stories: people and places that are lost and forgotten. My art world is populated with secretive, isolated girls and silly creatures that may or may not be wearing space helmets. I create my work with cut, layered paper, which allows for a sense of texture and dimensionality.”

My “pup” will eat anything. Pepper, my four-legged child, is going to be a pup of ten-years-old soon. As she gets older, there are fewer and fewer things she should eat. The food she loves is of the cheapest, most fast-food sort of variety. We limit her people food to fresh veggies & the occasional egg, but her dog food and treats have taken a huge turn. The cheapest of food causes the worst of skin allergies, but for the love of this animal, I’ll probably be making her food and treats before long.
