Light holds many meanings, and the absence of light can mean just as much. This is a show of glass art that comes alive with light and depicts the artists’ interpretation of spirituality, whether it is secular or religious, inspired by stories, drawn from nature, or inspired by dreams or emotions.

They are looking for entries that come alive with light, that are well designed, well photographed and display exceptional craftsmanship.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to US residents.

MEDIA: Glass art that captures your interpretation of spirituality with glass. Functional and Non-functional welcome. Mixed media will be considered if glass is a primary component of the work.

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales. Nope. I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab. I love factory spaces for art. This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year. Eventually they will let me in. You wait and see…

Check out this Open Call from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN). The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit. Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions and could have as many as 8 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

All Media may be considered.

DEADLINE: April 30, 2012. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions. So please keep in mind that this is a POSTMARK deadline.

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Landscapes for inclusion into the March 2012 online group exhibition.

2011 ARTIST of the YEAR: Pamela Zimmerman

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Today marks a New Year for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com! And, per usual, I am running a little behind the traditionally recognized New Year Celebration (December 31st), but I love Chinese New Year (yesterday). And, I almost got this post done by then, ha! I, of course, always appreciate an excuse to eat Chinese food…it doesn’t have to be a holiday.

This is the day we name the
Artist of the Year for 2011.

When this blog began in September of 2009, I was determined to cover not only art deadlines but also really good art. And, I chose a few artists here and there. I quickly realized that the Featured Artist program needed structure, or it would never really get done on any sort of regular basis. The $2 Art Contest was born.

I began to realize that the Featured Artist Page was getting crowded and adding more artists would lessen the impact of being Featured. I knew I had to start archiving artists yearly…

And the idea of
the Artist of the Year
was born.

I now give all of our Featured Artists each year notice that on December 31st at midnight EST, the Artist of the Year would be determined by the number of comments on their individual Featured Artist blog posts.

Right out of the gate, three artists’ fans came out strong: Denee Black, Deanna Bowdish, and Pamela Zimmerman. And after a month of voting, the final count was close… only a few dozen votes separated Black, Bowdish and Zimmerman.

I have enjoyed getting to know her this year. It feels to me like she showed a vulnerability to me, and thereby you, with her intricate, personal work. True vulnerability is rarely seen and often imitated.

Everything tastes better after 8pm, but that may account for the reality of my lifelong struggle with the size of my rear end. My husband likes to jokingly refer to me as his “vampire-honey,” but that is clearly untrue…vampires don’t eat food. But I would look cute as Countess Chocula. Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other. But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see. Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Linda Rutenbergm, a Montreal-born native, who has been a photographer for 30 years. Her MFA in Photography is from Concordia University. She’s taught photography and worked as a freelance photographer for thirty years.

Rutenbergm’s fine art work has been exhibited internationally. She has produced several series:- Urban Visions, Sacred Sites, Terre Caliente, One Island – Many Cities, Mont Royal – A World Apart, The Spiritual Landscape and is presently working on a nocturnal garden series.

Linda has become particularly known for her striking images of flowers taken at night, revealed in a series of books, starting with The Garden at Night: Private Views of Public Edens (2007),After Midnight (2008)and The English Garden at Night (2009).

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Studio 1666 is looking for works of art that is influenced by music. This can be interpreted many ways, and they are asking you to avoid the obvious and draw upon your imagination and push your own boundaries of what this means to you. Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.
