for cubs?

In our continuing efforts to downsize in preparation for “tiny living”, I downsized myself out of garden space.  We moved back to our previous 2-acre, mountain-top abode, but anything other than container gardening is impossible with out a major terracing project to provide flat space on the side of the mountain.  So, we’re going to attempt to grow a few squash & cucumbers on the deck using the railings as support.  But, considering the fact that my dog has tree’d several black bears during the past two-weeks.  Am I simply creating a buffet dinner on my porch?  Nature. Hmm.  This next Call wants to know your perspective.  Take a look…

I have grits for breakfast 3+ days per week.  I have a favorite brand of organic, non-GMO grits that never cease to inspire.  On a busy morning, it is scrambled eggs over the top of cheese grits.  The next morning, the refrigerated left over grits are cut into cakes that are sauteed and used as the base for Eggs Benedict.  This morning it was Charleston-style milk grits with a poached egg & chorizo.  There is no end to the independent spirit of this simple staple.  This next Call is an inspiration of grits proportions as well.  Take a look…

I’ve been toying with the idea of making cheese.  I have had a 30+ year love affair with cheese–cow to sheep to goat.  Does anyone think I can convince Jon that we can raise and milk cows, sheep & goats, plus make cheese in addition to the blogging, art, singing & house renovation?  It isn’t what we normally do, but we can learn, right?  I am going to start with a cow’s milk mozzarella. Wish me luck.  This next Call may, or may not, involve media with which YOU are familiar, but I think you should take a look either way…

Truly living green in the kitchen is a touch complicated.  Yes, I can buy locally sourced, sustainable foods.  But, as we work toward designing a  kitchen for the straw bale house we plan to build this year, do I really have it in me to skip out on a traditional stove/oven for a wood-burning or rocket stove/oven?  Not so sure.  But while I’m contemplating it, I can at least submit sustainably-themed work for this next Call.  How about you?

I don’t really have any major meals to cook during the holidays.  My mother-in-law traditionally makes homemade sloppy joes for Christmas Eve, and my mother cooks a ham and sweet potato cassarole.  Normally I will make a green veggie, but other than that, I’m off the hook.  My mother is 72 years old.  How long do you think the “I’ll bring the zucchini” line is going to work?  Mmmhmm.  I see  massive meal preparation in my near future too–it’s only fair.  But for all the injustices in our creative lives, there is always this next Call…

Check out this Call for Artist Stories: A Social Justice Project.  There is no entry fee, and currently, there is no deadline.  It is just a way for you to share your stories about being a working artist.  Maybe together we can come up with solutions…

I am not a naturally-talented baker.  I can create savory dishes all day, but the precision required for baking is a trying experience for me.  I have been experimenting with a peanut butter cookie recipe for days.
