CALL for ENTRIES: Sips, Shots & Gulps

GLASS

I rarely drink alcoholic beverages at home.  I have a sort of daily ritual that starts with two carbonated drinks which are followed by unsweetened, decaffeinated, iced black and/or orange tea until bedtime.  It never really occurs to me to deviate from that norm except when we are on stage or out for a special occasion.  Maybe I would be more inspired if I had something creative out of which to drink, like the ones found in this next Call.  It isn’t just about pottery either…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sweetwater Center for the Arts (Sewickley, PA) for Sips, Shots & Gulps an exhibit of handmade drinking vessels. Only $25 to enter, and it is NOT limited to ceramics. Take a look…

and peanuts

Most people associate Georgia with peaches, or maybe peanuts (thanks to Jimmy Carter), but I always think of barbeque ribs or creamy lobster bisque.  Random, I know.  I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta as a young girl, and barbeque ribs were a standard at least one night a week during the summer.  Once a teenager, I made treks to Savannah with my mother to have table-side Caesar salad and lobster bisque from our favorite restaurant.  I suppose every person’s food story is a unique work of non-fiction.  This next Call is your non-fiction opportunity to tell your own solo story.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Non-Fiction Gallery (Savannah, GA) for Your Art Here. $35 fee & 35% commission.  Here is a great chance for a solo show of your own.  Take a minute to investigate…

Cookbook authors have my number.  Make the food look fantastic on the cover, and I’ll buy it.  Yes, I judge books (some books) by their covers.  I recent bought quick & easy thai.  I’m just going to say that my judgement of the cover resulted in sticky rice with mangoes.  It was worth it.  This next Call encourages you to judge books by their covers as well.  Sometimes is just WORKS…

Gender rolls are “squishy” at my house.  My husband does most of the cooking.  I am the disciplinarian.  Even our mail comes bizarrely addressed since I didn’t take his last name.  It works for us.  It is what we know.  And, well, the food is good. 🙂  I use #imarriedforthefood a lot.  This next Call explores gender identity & the experience of being trans.  If this isn’t the Call for you, please pass it along…

Food, like language & art, is often just a matter of perspective.  When I say Eastern food, does that conjure images of Chinese take out or Carolina BBQ?  Does Western food conjure images of Tex-Mex or a California roll?  It is all perspective  For the record, MY answers would be BBQ & sushi.  To be clear, this next “Downeast” Call refers to the Carolina, but it is open to everyone.  And, now I want BBQ.  Pick me up some pulled pork if you go to the opening.  Take a look…

MENU

Frequently, the most memorable kitchen creations are happy accidents.  As much as I love a list, theme and a plan, sometimes I find myself in a situation that forces me to create a masterpiece from what I have on hand or try something new on the spur of the moment.  My favorite chicken-cheddar-broccoli soup came about as a necessary use of what I could find in the frig.  Now it is a winter menu staple in our house. This next Call is a show that is both un-juried & un-curated, but I KNOW this organization.  It will definitely be a show not to be missed, and you can be a part of it.  Please investigate this one…

EGGY

How is it that quiche became girly food?  I was at a cafe recently that specializes in quiche.  The waitress was reciting the day’s specials to a neighboring table of guests when the man interrupted her to say, “I’m not interested in quiche; I’m a MAN.” Really?  It is eggs, cream and cheese.  I thought, “Maybe it is due to the pie form.”  But, men eat pie, right?  I don’t understand his reasoning, but I restrained myself from asking for the sake of the man sitting at my table.  Maybe this next Call is looking for the quiche-goodness in women only.  Maybe.  Investigate…

The hot-fresh-now doughnut purveyor is very popular during tourist season in the Smokies.  Summertime often means a car line for the drive thru stretches for a 1/4 mile down the Parkway.  I don’t understand.  I’ll stand in line, or sit in line, for a lot of foods, but why doughnuts?  Donuts with a K are everywhere aren’t they?  What makes them so special while you’re on vacation?  It baffles me.  This next Call does NOT baffle me, and the name is all about the lines.  Check out the gallery and/or online show choice.  Interesting option…
