My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. I am always amazed by how a simple ingredient can be transformed into a magnificent dish. Root vegetables are the perfect example. Who would of thought that something that spent most of the time it has existed under the ground could be transformed into something beautiful, warm and nutty? The Annual International Exhibition is a juried competition organized by the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Tyler. Internationally known artists, curators, and scholars have served in past years as jurors selecting works for the exhibition created by some of the best contemporary artists living today. Every year 3 – 6 works are awarded a cash prize or are purchased by the Department from this exhibition. The purchase awards have made it possible for the University to build a collection of over 250 contemporary works of art from outstanding contemporary artists. This collection serves as an educational teaching resource and is exhibited in fine art teaching areas and other areas throughout the campus.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists, 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: Any two-dimensional work including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs are acceptable completed within the last three (3) years.

NOTIFICATION: December 16, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $30 for 3 works

JUROR: Karl Umlauf holds a BFA from UT Austin and MFA from Cornell University. His work is inspired by structural forms of land and contains imagery from petroleum refineries, salvage yards, and steel mills. He uses color and imagery to convey rhythm, properties of tension, and physics, with his most famous works consisting of large fiberglass sculptures and cast paper formations. Karl Umlauf’s work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and New Orleans Museum of Art. He is currently the Artist-in-Residence and a teaching professor at Baylor University.

AWARDS: Cash and purchase awards will be made and works added to the UT Tyler Department of Art and Art History permanent collection.

I don’t eat pine.

I enjoy the occasional Murder Mystery Dinner show, but I never want the mystery to be WHAT I am eating. I have fairly adventurous taste in food, but I still want the courtesy of knowing what I am putting in my mouth. For some reason, more than one chef has said to me, “I made it special for you, just try it.” 99% of the time they are right; however, for the occasional 1%, I have this to say to the chef, “If you had just TOLD me there were pine nuts in the wild boar dish, I could have spared you the public “ick” face when I tried it.” So there. This next Call is not really a Mystery for YOU, despite the name. Investigate for yourself…

Masters Mystery

The Masters’ Mystery Art Show (MMAS) is an international annual art event featuring over 1000 artworks by more than 500 artists from 31 countries around the globe. It includes nationally and internationally recognized artists, many brilliant emerging artists, as well as a number of celebrities from other fields. The MMAS was developed to benefit Florida International University’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Program. This event coincides with Art Basel and takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Miami Beach.

The list of contributing artists, including a host of well-established names, will be widely publicized in advance. Adding to the excitement will be the participation of renowned celebrities in different disciplines and selected local students will compliment the roster. The “mystery” is that the name of the artist for each work is kept secret during the exhibition, only to be revealed at the completion of the sale. Thus the public is invited to “play detective” as they try to identify the artist – and be the first to buy the best!

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All exhibited works will be originals in a 6” x 9” format and will sell for the fixed price of $50.

DEADLINE: Submitted artwork must be received by November 15th, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: None. This is an all-hung exhibit.

ENTRY FEE: None.

SALES: All exhibited works will sell for the fixed price of $50. By submitting your work, you are making a DONATION of your work for sale. You won’t make any cash, but you’ll get another line on your resume, and you may end up with a new collector of your work.

Sometimes it take me multiple tries to learn a lesson. For example, I am not a good baker. It has taken many failed attempts at breads, muffins and biscuits for me to come to grips with this unfortunate reality. And lately, the same is true with art. How many times do I have to watch my friends and collegues revel in their successful publication attempts and the resulting opportunitites before I quit missing out? No more for me. By launching a new redesign, they’ve become a much more interactive journal. They search the web for interesting projects in art and design to share with their readers. They ask their readers to share what inspires them. The purpose, not to copy but to inspire.

Inspiration can come from an innovative chair design or an unusual ring or from an interview with a well-known designer or artist or something from ones past.

Creative Quarterly is the best of art and design, quarterly.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, professors, instructors, graphic designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and fine artists in all media.

All entries must have been completed during the last twelve months. All art directors, graphic designers, photographers, illustrators and fine artists are eligible to enter —professionals and students are judged separately. Judging is done digitally. Richeson School of Art & Gallery, a division of Jack Richeson & Co., Inc., is proud to announce the Richeson 75 Small Works 2012. Seventy five two-dimensional works of art and several alternates will be selected to represent the finest examples of painting and drawing being produced by today’s visual artists.

ELIGIBILITY: Competition is open to all artists over age 18. All work entered must be original in concept/execution and have been created since January 1, 2010. No work done in a class, workshop or under supervision is eligible.

MEDIA Categories: Artwork IMAGE may not exceed 144 square inches (height x width). 1) Oils, Oil Pastel & Acrylic 2) Other (Soft Pastels, Drawing/Dry Media, Watercolor, Gouache, Casein, Printmaking, etc). No photography, electronic or computer generated and/or assisted or 3-D is eligible for this competition.

Arkansas reminds me of popcorn. When I was about eight years old, my father was transferred to Arkansas for work for 18 weeks, and during the inclement weather (a three foot flood, 18″ of snow and 100°+ temps all during our 18 weeks in Little Rock), I would go to work with one of my father’s friends. This friend worked at a local movie theatre as a projectionist, and I would sit in the projection booth and watch the movie through the teeny tiny viewing window with a cardboard box of leftover theatre popcorn in my lap. Blissful. I am doubting that this next Call will feature popcorn at the opening, but you COULD bring your own…

MEDIA: original works on paper, created within the last 2 years, including but not limited to, digital, intaglio, lithographic, photographic, relief, serigraphic and stencil processes. Monotypes are also eligible but repros of pre-existing works are not. Each print must be matted in or mounted on a 16 x 20, 20 x 24, or 24 x 32 inch white or off-white mat. *Editor’s Note: As long as your print fits in/on a mat of the above-listed size, it qualifies as a small print for the purposes of this exhibit.
