Embracing our Differences

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bay front.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 6th, 2014

NOTIFICATION:
Winning selections
will be announced online at embracingourdifferences.org by mid-March, 2014.

ENTRY FEE: None.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. At the judges’ discretion, an additional 6 “honorable mentions” may be selected.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

I haven’t had a trick-or-treater at my door in years. I miss seeing cute kids in even cuter costumes. I miss giving out chocolate, knowing it may be the only candy that doesn’t get thrown away later. But alas, I live in the mountains. Not many people live in neighborhoods, and those that do have an “organized community,” don’t have walkable streets. We buy 4-wheel drive vehicles because we actually need them. Our kids go downtown and trick or treat on Main Street. No joke. So, I have to get in the spirit other ways. This exhibit celebrates works of art that bring to life fantastical myths, legends, fables, folktales, fairy tales, and the like. Around the world, from prehistoric times to the present, artists have been part of the story-telling process, giving shape and form to fantastical stories of supernatural beings, great heroes and heroines, cautionary tales, magical creatures, and more. In ancient times, artists commonly rendered images of these stories on walls, pottery, statuary, tapestries, and paintings. In more recent times, books, graphic novels, movies, apps, and games have expanded the way we experience these stories. No matter the time period, the artist becomes the story-teller and shares their spectacular vision through their art.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media welcome; small to large-scale installations; new media encouraged; indoor only.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 entry fee (or $20 for Annmarie members) for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Judging will be done on installed works, not application images. If possible, judging will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

Nat’l Juried Exhibition 2014

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2014. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Paul Collins, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, digital, and mixed media), Graphic Arts (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, conte, colored pencil, and printmaking), 3D (sculpture, ceramic, and fibers), and Photography.

DEADLINE: December 8, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Mailed January 6, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to three works. Up to 3 additional entries may be submitted for $7/ea. Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital images only. Each 2D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images: two full views and one detail view.

JUROR: Paul Collins is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Nashville, TN. Paul makes drawings, paintings and sculpture that combine humor, tactility and observation to examine the world around us. Paul has an MFA from Yale and has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Vermont Studio Center.

Paul is an enthusiastic collaborator and has curated shows or organized artist projects for a wide range of artists. Paul lives in Nashville, TN & works as Gallery Director and Asst Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards as designated by the juror

I write a whole lot of crap about food. Most of it is just an off the cuff note about whatever is going on in my kitchen. But it is NEVER meant as a judgment about the way YOU eat. One of FB friends updated her status yesterday with a comment about how people who eat cheese, fruit and veggies cold, as opposed to room temp, have clearly given up on life and are just eating garbage. Really? I am sorry my cold strawberry has flagged me as a useless garbage eater. So, I want to be clear. No judgement from me. Do I want you to eat creme-filled snack cakes? The envelope is the canvas. Some artists incorporate the mailing address and stamp in their work, others use the blank side as their work space. Medium types include Illustrators, calligraphers, paper artists, graffiti artists and stencilers among others. Anything goes. The message is up to the sender.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Faces

An enduring fascination with the photographic portrait.

Each portrait reveals something of the sitter, the photographer and also of us as viewers. No one image can muster a whole and complete being, no matter how much we believe this could be so. This is the part of the photograph we create in our imagination, we fill in each crack and hole with a sort of personalized reasoning. And all these unknowns in the midst of true transparency.

Eye contact is made or retracted, body language boastful, reticent or indecipherable. Facial expressions can be hard at work or numbly slack. While subjects have a power over these photographic outcomes, it is the choice of the photographer to coax or mute said expressions for their artistic offering.

Submit work depicting people, selves, faces. People that baffle us with their complexities, personalities or simplistic nature. Make us question how this person existed at this particular place and time.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Elizabeth Avedon has forged her own path in the photography industry, collaborating with museums, publishing houses, galleries and artists. The former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe and Creative Director for The Gere Foundation, she has received awards and recognition for her exhibition design and publishing projects, including the retrospective exhibition and book: Avedon: 1949–1979 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; and Richard Avedon: In the American West for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. Elizabeth is a regular contributor to the Life.com award-winning Le Journal de la Photographie, profiling notable leaders in the world of Photography.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes.
