TAMALE

I love tamales.  My life has been dotted with expert tamale makers–the Mexican version.  Then I tried Guatemalan tamales.  Oh my.  The differences are subtle, but important.  In Guatemalan tamales, the corn used to make the masa (dough) is not sweet, and they are usually wrapped in  leaves, not corn husks.  Tamales can come in red & black varieties, both sweet & savory, both large & small.  If are the winner of this next Call, they pick up the tab for your ticket & hotel to the opening.  Be sure to pick up a tamale while you are in Guatemala!  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from La Fototeca & Guatemala.com (Guatemala) for Guatephoto 2015. $25 entry. Printing & exhibit costs are covered.  And winners get a ticket & hotel for the opening!  An excellent int’l opportunity…

EGGPLANT

My kiddo just turned 16.  For his birthday, he didn’t ask for pizza or burgers; he wanted Indian food.  So proud.  Since his palate took a huge left turn a couple of years ago, eating out with him has been a voyage of firsts.  The first taste of Baingan ka Bharta (a spicy mash of eggplant & tomatoes) & Goat Korma were adorable.  And hopeful.  Finally I can rest knowing that I might have put another foodie out into the world that is willing to eat adventurously.  This next Call could be a first opportunity for you at the first show for this gallery.  Investigate…

We all eat massive amounts of corn.  Since my husband’s Celiac diagnosis, we are a gluten-free household, and it took a lot of work.  But, now it is second nature and, really, no big deal.  But corn?  If I had to try to cut corn out of our diets, we would starve; it is in EVERYTHING.  In 2012, the USDA claimed 88% of U.S. corn is GMO.  I’m not okay with that, so we are planning an attempt to grow our own soon.  Meanwhile, did you know that corn does excellent double duty as a trellis for growing peas?  Plus, the peas supply much-need nitrogen to the soil for the corn.  Don’t you just love nature?  It is in the nature of this next Call to offer DOUBLE the prizes. Make us proud…

The artist’s work can be the “abstracting of representational objects” as in expressionistic, surrealistic or cubistic work. “Pure abstraction” is also accepted where there is little to no visual references of the external world.

“Abstraction allows man to see with his mind what he cannot see physically with his eyes…. Abstract art enables the artist to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite out of the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind. It is an exploration into unknown areas.” — Arshile Gorky

ICE

Can someone bring me a mango ice shave?  I have been desperately trying not to whine about the heat, but you could stave off my whining with a shave ice.  Really.  Don’t bring me a snow cone; it isn’t the same thing.  It is about the location of the syrup.  In a shave ice/ice shave, the shaving creates a snow-like texture that absorbs the syrup.  In a snow cone, the ice is crushed causing all the syrup to settle to the bottom. Don’t try a shave ice unless you are prepared to never eat a snow cone again. Really.  You can’t keep your hot weather, but don’t keep your hot pics.  This next Call is a great distraction.  No shipping required…

CORNY

Popping corn is an art.  We consume bowls and bowls and bowls of popcorn at my house every night–organic, non-GMO cooked on the stove the same way it was done when I was little.  As a matter of fact, I believe my craving for popcorn is actually triggered by sunset.  I adore it toped by finely grated Parmesan & a sprinkle of chile powder.  My husband craves it with huge doses of freshly ground black pepper.  My son prefers it with just a sprinkle of sea salt.   That’s our nighttime popcorn trifecta.  This next Call is open to whole different kind of nighttime imagery.  Take a look…

Mellow, slow-cooked flavors are not usually just a product of slow cooking.  There are special ingredients that help meld flavors, that calm individual ingredients like onion into more flavorful combinations with other foods.  Home-made broths are excellent, and even a quality Worcestershire sauce can make a stove-top dinner feel like a slow-cooked delicacy.  My favorite is still sherry vinegar.  It is the penultimate calming pan de-glaze much like the neutral density filter, for which this Call is titled, is the most under-appreciated photo filter. Red is undeniably my favorite color.  I find myself drawn to red tones in food, from salmon to cherry Jell-o, Bloody Mary’s to pomegranates.  Go figure.  But recently I tripped across golden raspberries.  How had I missed them all these years?  They are slightly sweeter & milder than the traditional red variety, and I am willing to admit that I like them better in some instances.  I feel like such a traitor.  The next Call is the perfect red celebration.  I like this group exhibit…
