I have had the privilege of enjoying everything from a jug band at a pig pickin’ to authentic mariachi while eating tamales on a recent trip to Cozumel. But my favorite dinner music is the humming of my lactose-intolerant 12 year old when he delights in his favorite cheesy indulgence…pizza. CALL for ENTRIES: Musical Influences

Studio 1666 is looking for works of art that is influenced by music. This can be interpreted many ways, and they are asking you to avoid the obvious and draw upon your imagination and push your own boundaries of what this means to you. By drawing upon senses other than vision, the idea is to convey feeling through artistic means that evoke multiple outcomes.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography, painting, sculpture, design, multimedia, mixed media, etc.

DEADLINE: January 31, 2012

ABOUT THE GALLERY: This is an opportunity for a group show at gallery located just off gallery row and close by Granville Island. Studio 1666 is Vancouver’s new non-traditional gallery space, featuring current works from both established and emerging artists who are invested in confronting and responding to current trends in art. At Studio 1666, artists are invited to give voice to their expression by sharing their creativity and ideologies with the local community. Their aim is to support this partnership by providing a relaxed space that promotes progressive art with the mandate of making it accessible.

Heart smart foods have become the norm in my house. I have scary-low blood pressure, and my doc says it makes me far less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. However, my husband is one of those string beans that can consume 5000 calories per day. If Captain Consumption is going to grow old with me, the meats are going to have to be lean, the vegetables plentiful, whole grains a constant and cheese…just an occasional indulgence. JUROR: Kim Casebeer was born and raised in Kansas, and still lives in Kansas. She draws her inspiration from the simplicity of the Flint Hills, an area of wide open ranch land. These days Kim also feels at home painting in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming and Texas. Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.

Kim’s work has been featured in numerous magazine articles. She has exhibited in many prestigious national competitions, winning many awards, including Best of Show at the 2010 Nomades del Arte National Invitational Exhibit held at Southwest Gallery. Kim has also particpated in museum shows in Arizona, Wyoming, Montana and Oklahoma.

AWARDS: Best of Show: $1,500.00, 2nd Place: $1,000.00, 3rd Place: $ 500.00, 3 Awards of Merit: $ 100.00 each, 3 Honorable Mentions & 1 Purchase Award.

“Attitudinal Healing Connection (AHC) a non-profit organization in West Oakland is looking for local artists to paint the Hoover Corridor Neighborhood’s first large scale mural project. Using the theme of super heroes, the murals are going to be designed by local middle and high school students and are intended to uplift and positively transform the neighborhood.

“Over the course of three years we plan to complete six murals under freeway overpasses includingSan Pablo Avenue, Market Street, West Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. These murals will serve as a gateway to West and Downtown Oakland and can become a key way in which our community is perceived. ENTRY FEE: Artists may submit in more than 1 category by submitting multiple emails and paying the $25 fee for each entry. The $25 fee pays for 1 entry of up to 3 images. (If you enter in Drawing, you submit up to 3 images and pay $25 for the entire entry.)

JUROR: Internationally exhibited artist Flynn Geissel holds a deep passion for art and has been painting since 1997. The artist’s work has been exhibited in two American museums and in galleries throughout the nation. Serving two masters, the artist studied studio art and depth psychology, completing a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. During the study and practice of psychology, Geissel gravitated toward the domains of well-being, creativity, and the use of creative process as a healing tool. Discovering a wealth of artistic material in the study of dreams, the unconscious, and the healing stories of many cultures, the artist moved further into art as a life calling.

Equally proficient in the landscape as well as in abstract expressionism, Geissel’s work is a regular part of juried exhibits. Geissel’s work has also been exhibited at two Americal Museums including the July 2010 “Sensory Overload” exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of the Living Artist in San Diego. The artist has also been exhibited internationally at The Brick Lane Gallery in London, UK.

AWARDS: The first place winner, Juror’s Choice, will be awarded $350 and artwork by this artist will be placed on the home page of the website. A second and third place winner will also be chosen. At least 2 winners will be chosen in each of the entry categories. Each of the 10 winners will have a gallery on the website; winners will submit 10 images in JPEG format for their gallery, bio, and artist statement.

SALES: Winning artists may provide prices for works exhibited. The website will include a contact page for buyers who would like to purchase work. Artists will handle their own sales with no commission by SpeakingArtAward.com.

I want to love apples, but truth be known, I don’t. Due to my proximity to multiple apple orchards, my not loving apples seems a little tragic. A few have said that painting is dead, but alas it is flourishing as never before. There is great work being done, on the level of Gerard Richter, Susan Swartz, Tomma Abts and David Hockney, to name just a few. And all have exhibited in NYC – now perhaps you can as well.

The Jeffrey Leder Gallery will start the new year with an expansive exhibit: “International Painting NYC.” The exhibit will occupy 3 floors of the gallery. The gallery is located in LIC, New York City: 8 minutes from Manhattan, around the corner from MoMA PS1 Museum, 2 blocks from the Sculpture Center and 6 Blocks from the Noguchi Musuem.

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. JUROR: Meg Partridge is the Director of the Imogen Cunningham Trust, the organization established in 1975 to preserve and promote the work of Partridge’s grandmother. Please visit the Trust’s website at www.imogencunningham.com to find out more about the life of this fascinating photographer. Partridge also administers her father’s photographic legacy, The Rondal Partridge Archives. Among her projects are a film profiling her godmother entitled Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life, and a documentary about her father called, Outta My Light: Photographer Rondal Partridge. Partridge has worked as an executive producer, producer, director and project manager for many companies. Raised in Berkeley, California, Partridge received a BA in Theater Arts and Arts Administration from Antioch College and an MA in Film from San Francisco State University.

AWARDS: $500 - Best of Show and $300 – Merit award(s)
