BOTTOMS up!

The mission of AAAD is to inspire artists through resources, opportunities, and the work of your contemporaries.  Should you be our next Artist of the Day?  Be sure to let us knowAAAD is proud to feature the work of painter Kris Wlodarski.

Krzysztof Wlodarski, aka Kali, born in 1977 in Poland. Graduated at University of Zielona Gora, Poland in philosophy. Wlodarski, influenced by the art of Gottried Helnwein, Saturno Butto, Joel Peter Witkin and modern Bodyart movements, is now showing a series “The Sleep of Reason.”  Wlodarski is also musician , film-maker, and tattoo artist, living and working in London.

Wlodarski says, “These works are reflecting a head-on collision between the primary sphere of instinct (sex & violence) and the secondary sphere of culture (taboo). This leads to a sort of synthesis, its necessary result being a transgressive form of art.

Sleep of Reason by Kris Wlodarski“I call it ‘The sleep of reason,’ a reference to Goya , because this is the manifestation of all that is pre-rational, anti-enlightenment, anti-creative. It is about the moments of insanity when the language and logic are suspended in favour of primal drives that are otherwise subject to suppression by cultural structures.”

Plagued by anxiety and bitterness from a devastating illness, Francisco Goya (1746 – 1828) created “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters,” one of 80 etchings in his “Los Caprichos” series–scathing critiques of human errors and vices of contemporary religious and political figures.  “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” portrays Goya, often believed to be the Father of Modern Art, hounded by creatures that threaten the ignorant mind. Goya believed that imagination, combined with reason, would keep these monsters at bay.

Click here to see more of Kris Wlodarski's work!I am drawn to the passion with which Wlodarski’s interprets his vision of contemporary culture–shaped by sex and violence, destruction and morbidity.  The connection to Goya, and sometimes startling lack of connection, is a comment on Wlodarski’s view on where we are as a culture today.  His striking use of color gives us a momentary glimpse into the moments of insanity between the rational thoughts.  The moments without control or norms.

It is easy to feel transported to another place or time by these works, and maybe that’s the sugar that makes it easier to take the medicine–the knowledge that we are all there, on the cusp, all the time.  It is…the buttery taste of scotch with the charred character of bourbon.

ARTIST RESOURCE: Model Mayhem

Your friendly blogger, R.L. Gibson, works almost primarily in figurative context.  My subject matter may not always be a face, but you can pretty much guarantee that there will be a body part of some sort.  And, although I am known for the Pieces of Me series–all of which feature me, I have gotten to the point in my career where I simply cannot take another picture of me, my family or my friends–or even my acquaintances for that matter.

Visit Jerry Portelli, the Clown God!My esteemed collegue, Arizona-based artist and photographer Jerry Portelli (pictured left), has been shoving me out of my comfort zone lately.  He introduced me to Model Mayhem–an online resource, primarily for models, that offers photographers and artists a way to connect to models near them.  For the models, it is an online “go see.”  For you, as an artist, you get to pour over their profile and previous work to find just what inspires you.

I have had several models agree to TFP or Trade for Prints in lieu of cash.  They build their portfolio, and I have money to eat.  Model Mayhem is free to join, but you must be approved.  The process isn’t automated.  You must fit into a member category and the requirements for that category.  Here are a few highlights from their site:

CALL FOR VENDORS: Crafty Feast – November 2009 Deadline

Click Here to Subscribe to this Blog by email!

This post will not end the debate about art vs. craft vs. artisan crafts vs. crafty artisans.  If the word “crafty” exclusively conjures the image of Martha Stewart and crocheted toilet paper covers for you, this may not be your venue. Not that kind of crafty!

I usually refrain from writing about Vendor Opportunities; however, almost every artist I know has a crafty streak (not the one pictured right).  And, I simply can’t refuse a connection, albeit just in name, between food and art.  Yep, I said it…art.  Don’t begrudge an craft artisan the title of artist because they actually SELL something.  Think of it as an opportunity–an opportunity to EAT.

The Crafty Feast will be in the Historic Tapp's Building! The Crafty Feast is an juried indie craft fair held in Columbia, SC.  It is mainly regional with artists primarly coming from the Carolinas; however, they do boast artists from as far away as Colorado and New York.

This year, the Crafty Feast is being held in the beautiful 10,000 square foot historic Tapp’s building on Main Street (pictured left) in Columbia, SC on December 12th.

I encourage you to investigate the Crafty Feast.  Apply and make a few bucks.  There seems to be no fee to apply, and the vendor fee ($60) is reasonable…you know how I love free entries.  Here’s some great information from their site and pics from previous vendors:

Visit this former vendor's site! What is an Indie Craft Fair?

They’re not your mama’s craft fair, that’s for sure! Crafty Feast specifically specializes in experimental, non-traditional and unique handmade or repurposed crafts (we love green).  Indie crafts have swept the nation.  For more information about Indie Crafts in Atlanta, read this Creative Loafing article.  Many of their vendors come from Etsy.com–come to the Crafty Feast to check them out.  Or if you can’t make it to the feast, visit the site to find something perfect for you!

Visit this former vendor's blog! What is Crafty Feast?

Crafty Feast is a juried independent craft fair that was first held May 30th, 2009.  Crafty Feast showcases unique, one-of a kind crafts made by independent designers similar to what you find on Etsy.com.

    What’s a jury?  Is there a prize?

There are no prizes.  Everyone who applied was viewed by a jury of independent artists who meet, look at 2 images of the vendors work and make their selection of works that are handmade or repurposed and are unique in some way.

Visit this former vendor's blog!Does it cost to get in?

Currently, Crafty Feast is a free event and it’s usually cash and carry

I wanna buy that!  Who’s going to be there?

Past vendors goods have ranged from recycled handmade hats to purses made out of inner-tubes.  See all past vendors here.

Now there is no excuse not to be a collector.  Submit your work today!  Here is some great information from Art-O-Mat

Many thanks to Toni Turbeville for reminding me of this great resource.Check out this Art-O-Mat work from Kathy Fisher!

ARTIST TIP: Marketing & The Artist

Don't just make lemonade, make mojitos!I receive forwards of shows and calls and artist tips on a regular basis.  Some are wonderful; some are too basic to pass along.  I try to filter them to offer the best and brightest to you because I know how busy you are.

A few days ago, I received a list of press contacts of reporters searching for subjects to interview from my friend and Austin-based writer Dean Lofton.  Among them was The Abundant Artist.  I knew instantly upon reading the tagline “dispelling the starving artist myth” that we were like-minded.

Click Here to visit The Abundant Artist!

At the heart of The Abundant Artist is an opportunity to pay for an art marketing consultant.  And, while you may or may not be ready for that step, I recommend that you subscribe to the weekly email newsletter.Visit Ann Rae's Blog!

I subscribed, and in my introductory email was offered an interview with Ann Rae, a California painter know for both her vineyard paintings and phenomenal success through unique marketing strategy.

You’ll need the password to hear the interview, so sign up for the email list today.  It is worth it.  I promise.  If you are one of those artists that bristle at the idea of marketing your artwork or thinking of your artwork as a business opportunity–don’t visit this site…You won’t like what you hear.  You should stay home and muse to yourself about being under-appreciated.
