I have always wondered why I have never received a “____ of the Month” gift for a holiday. Fruit, cheese, beer…you name it, I would love any of them. Maybe my relatives are concerned about my food obsession? It’s possible. But not only do I love most things edible, I have a soft spot for mail. I may be the only human alive that still has magazine subscriptions…plural. You can feel this one coming, can’t you? Mmmhmm…art publication.

It is that time again folks; it is time to remind you that all publicity for your artwork is good publicity. Check out this Call for Entries from Rural Route 2 Box 281, a bi-monthly art zine dedicated to photo-based contemporary art. It is available both digitally and in hard copy.

Call for Entries: Rural Route Two Box Two Eighty One

RR 2 Box 281 is a bi-monthly zine dedicated to photo-based contemporary art. They are currently seeking artists for inclusion in our first year of publications. Each issue will be focused on the work of two living artists working and living outside of traditional art centers / major metropolitan regions.

The title “RR 2 Box 281” comes from the childhood address of the zine’s editor. Through Digital and hard copy dissemination, RR2 seeks to increase the exposure of artists working and living in rural (non-urban) settings, thereby creating a dialog around relationships between contemporary art, regional identity and rurality.

Six times a year a new issue of RR 2 Box 281 will be released as both a free pdf file (to be emailed) and a hand-bound hard-copy zine (to be sent via post). The hard-copy zine will be $15/ issue, or $60 for a yearly subscription. The first Issue will be released on Nov. 4 @ P.S.1. in conjunction with Printed Matter’s NY ART BOOK FAIR.

My family enjoys joking… that if I continue moving to towns with smaller and smaller populations that I will eventally live in complete isolation except, of course, for my husband, internet access, food delivery, my dogs and a separate home for my shoe collection. Funny, eh? There is something to be said for both urban AND country living. I love them both, but buying fresh eggs and goat milk from a farm on my way home has skewed my objectivity just a smidge.

I cannot wait to see the results of the Call for Entries for The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book from The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards. It is a type of art publication–which you know I love, and part published exhibit. There is no entry fee unless you are accepted. Take advantage of this great opportunity to both tell your story and show your work.

CALL for ENTRIES: Urban and Country Landscape

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards invite photographers from all over the world to submit their work to be featured in The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book – Nature and People, Life and Culture, and in the online WonderPick Gallery.

In this occasion WPGA wants to select images displaying your city or neighborhood, or that city that you visited this summer or in past years, or it can be the country landscape of your dreams, that one that have stimulated your eyes and your imagination; images about the city and the country life, the culture in your home town or in the remote Bhutan or in La Havana; images of that unforgettable wedding or of your family during a remarkable week-end or at home.

The theme is ample and everything will depend on your interpretation, knowing that we will like to screen landscapes and cityscapes with or without people in the scene. People can be predominant in the scene.
Both color and black and white (including duotones, toned) will be accepted to be screened. Abstract, micro and macro images will not be accepted. All kind of processes, including digital manipulation will be accepted.

The selection process: There will be two screenings

First screening: Selection will be done by WPGA’s artistic and editorial staff. The first screening will be conducted to accept or reject the submitted works. There’s is no entry fee to submit works to the first screening, and you may submit a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 12 images.

Within 1 week after the reception of the images sent for consideration of the jurors in the first screening, submitters will be notified by email detailing which works have been accepted and which have been rejected. Together with the notification’s email a brief structured feedback will be provided.

Second screening: Selection will be done by Julio Hardy, WPGA’s Managing Director. Accepted images in the first screening will be included in the second screening and entered in the competition. Those works which passed the first screening will be exhibited for one year in the online WonderPick gallery, and available for sale.

During the second screening, 80 images will be selected to be featured in The Urban and Country Landscape Annual Book – Nature and People, Life and Culture.

ENTRY FEES: There is NO INITAL ENTRY FEE. Participants in the second screening will have to pay an entry fee within 1 week after receiving the notification that their image/s have pass the first screening and have been entered into the competition.

The entry fee for those works selected (those that have passed the first screening and have been entered into the competition) will be: $15 for each image accepted, up to 3 images; and $8 for each additional image.

PAYMENT OF FEES: Once the number of images selected in the first screening –and that have therefore been entered into the competition- an email will be sent to you as well as a Paypal invoice with the entry fees to be paid according to the calculation based on the images accepted, to settle the entry fees.

Prizes: Best Image of Show (to be featured in the book cover) will receive a $ 500 B&H gift certificate. Runner up (to be featured in the book back cover) $ 300 B&H gift certificate.

I am a wierdo, admittedly. I am obsessed with food. I don’t drink coffee. I rarely wear pants. I won’t do much that can’t be done in four inch heels, and I don’t like prints…unless they are geometric. Oh yeah, that is just the tip of the weirdness iceberg. I like geometric food too…Gorgeous round egg yolks, little logs of goat cheese, and the perfect grid of a golden waffle.

CALL for ENTRIES: Snap to Grid at LACDA

Show your work in our un-juried exhibit featuring digital art and photography. All entries will be printed (8.5″x11″ on heavyweight paper) and shown in our gallery arranged in a grid. Entrants submit JPEG files of original work.

Gallery Statement: “Every year for 50 years the L.A. Municipal Gallery has held its ‘Open Call’ exhibit where any artist can show up with their art and an entry fee (to benefit gallery programs) and the piece is shown.

I have spent the last two days in a ballroom in Northwest Tennessee at a corporate conference. As you might imagine, the rubber chicken served at ALL of the conferences was not the highlight of my culinary experience. However, I am most surprised that what I missed. More than anything, I missed the sunlight on my face. Flourescent lighting is not your friend. Every chance I could find between seminars I stood in the sun.

Imagine my delight to find this great Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called The Spice of Light celebrates the beauty of nature, specifically light, that we find the essence of our souls. CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Spice of Light

Fine art nature photographers create emotions, feelings and memories. Sometimes Mother Nature gives you the perfect light, the perfect composition, the perfect colors, and you are able to present your experience exactly as the lens captured it.

Unfortunately, most of the time…she doesn’t. This doesn’t lessen the excitement, the drama, you experienced at the moment of capture. At times like this, you have to go deep within yourself to discover the colors, lines, and shapes that not only express what you experienced, but also transfer that emotion to the viewer.

Color: the Spice of Light is your opportunity to express nature in a manner that doesn’t necessarily express reality, but does express your feelings and experience at the moment of capture. And, by all means, if nature gave you that “perfect moment”, then submit that moment! The Juror wants to see drama through the use of composition, color and light….an image that makes the viewer want to stop and spend time with your creation….an image that makes the viewer FEEL! Remember, it’s within the beauty of nature that we find the essence of our souls.

JUROR: Bruce K. Haley, Jr. uses the camera lens as his paint brush. His bold and colorful presentation of nature has made his work much sought after throughout the United States.

Since November of 2002, Haley’s award-winning art has appeared in over one-hundred exhibitions in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Colorado, North Carolina Michigan, and California. His work is included in many corporate and private collections including six pieces purchased by the state of West Virginia for their permanent art collection.

In Bruce’s words, “Photography isn’t about f/stops, shutter speeds or equipment. it’s about living, feeling, seeing. It’s about opening my mind to learning, not only about the people, places and things around me, but also, about me. Photography, for me, is life living, life giving.”

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger. a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date October 28, 2010.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

I write a lot about the recipe for success, about using the best ingredients, about never over-cooking. I don’t like to talk about the burnt bread of it all. But the truth is that even when you follow the recipe, sometimes the souflee just doesn’t rise. You can’t take it personally; you just have to get back in the kitchen.

I entered the original Beers Lambert I Am Solitary call posted on this site…and my souflee didn’t rise. However, I am going back to the kitchen, and I invite you to do the same. Beers.Lambert Contemporary Art is proud to curate an exhibition for Gift Gallery, at its extraordinary location on London’s primary gallery row, Vyner Street.

I Am Solitary – London, is a counterpart and extension of the related Beers Lambert exhibition that took place in Nottingham, in September of 2010.

This collaboration with Gift Gallery seeks progressive contemporary art that responds to questions of identity and individuality.

The exhibition aims to highlight ideas and articulations relating to a conceptual and aesthetic understanding of individuality, isolation, and identity in a world typified by conflict, disillusionment, and change.

The work submitted should critically & aesthetically challenge the reception of these themes & truly push the direction of contemporary art.*

A GOOD EGG

We all know that I love food, but it occured to me that I don’t mention that I love cooks and chefs often enough. There is little better in this world than a well crafted Eggs Benedict. And, while the eggs are best when farm fresh, hollandaise in the wrong hands is just BAD regardless of how fresh the eggs are. I feel much the same about craft artisans.

A scarf isn’t always just a scarf…ask Pat K. Thomas. And certainly, jewelry isn’t always just jewelry…ask Vanessa Walilko. CALL for ENTRIES: Past is Present

It will come as no surprise that I love kitchen gadgets. I actually own a machine called the CoCoMotion (pictured right) that serves the solitary purpose of making hot cocoa at the perfect temperature. Embarrassing, but true. The top of my cabinets serves as a storage house of ridiculous serving pieces I’ll never use, old cheese boxes, and some very cool art made out of toasters. And if it is an OLD kitchen gadget…like my egg scale, then I’m really in love.

I fell in love for this Call for Entries from The Columbus (GA) Museum called Past is Present: Contemporary Approaches to Historical Decorative Arts and Design. Check it out…I think you’ll be surprised to find it is part classical applied art, part artisan craft and a whole lot of opportunity to look at your art from a different perspective.

CALL for Entries: Past is Present

The Columbus Museum announces a call to artists for its upcoming exhibition, Past Is Present: Contemporary Approaches to Historical Decorative Arts and Design. Contemporary artists are creating artwork that is breathing new life into techniques and forms found in centuries-old American decorative arts and design.

This exhibition will explore reinterpretations of textile work, including embroidery and beadwork; ceramics, such as transfer ware and figurines; portraiture, including miniature paintings and silhouettes; furniture-making, such marquetry and tall-case clocks; stained glass; and other traditional American decorative arts forms. The exhibition will be accompanied by a 16-page publication.

Eligibility: Open to all artists residing in the Continental United States. The Columbus Museum encourages innovative and progressive work that utilizes a diversity of art forms and media.

How to Submit Your Work: Please send 5-10 images at least 300 dpi on CD. Label all images with title and submit a corresponding image list.

The image list should include the title, date, dimensions, and medium (please list specific materials for mixed-media work). Please also include a current resume and artist statement.

Do not send original artwork, slides, master tapes, catalogues or reviews. Materials without self-addressed stamped envelope will not be returned.

DEADLINE: All materials must be postmarked before October 1, 2010; they may hand-delivered by that date to the Columbus Museum, located at 1251 Wynnton Road, Columbus, Georgia 31906, if preferred.

ENTRY FEE: There is no submission fee.

Electronic Media Work: Submit a sample of work(s) up to 30 minutes on DVD. (Complete work may exceed this running time.) Samples should be accompanied with label copy (title and date), length of running time, artist statement and resume. Materials without self-addressed stamped envelope will not be returned.

Notification: Artists will be contacted by December 1, 2010.

I simply can’t wait…just a few days away from reality to get in touch with my inner dreamer again…the one that believes all things in life are possible.

ITALIAN ARTIST RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY!

Martignano International Residency for Artists – MIRA, supports international artists and promotes the cultural exchange between artistic disciplines and international experiences. At MIRA they have created a pristine environment exclusively for the interaction of the artists and their work needs.

Their institution offers 4 furnished rooms, 3 with private bathrooms, which serve as living spaces. They are all adapted with work desks for the artists to be able to create also in the comfort of their room.

The grounds are divided between 2 buildings, one having the main shared work studio, and the other permitting the artists to work freely throughout the house in order to create wherever they feel more at ease.

They assist the artists as much as possible in order for them to concentrate solely on their creating. Once a month they organize an open house in which they invite local artists and the surrounding community in order to further promote the cultural exchange between the artists and their adopted home.

Also, they are fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Comune of Martignano who have kindly donated the gallery installations at the Palazzo Palmieri, every two months, in order for their artists to have an exhibition.

Artists, critics, press and the community at large are invited to attend. If funds permit, a brochure is printed to document the exhibition.

Studios are available from one to six month periods. They have found that one month is barely enough to arrive and adapt, let alone create and exhibit.

For stays of longer than three months, the options for those non European Community Citizens are to either leave the Schengen Zone and return, or applying for an extension on the tourist visa. Please check ahead with your local embassy, and they will check on their side.

There is a monthly fee charge of between 700 and 900 Euro depending on the room chosen.

This money goes solely to the maintenance and continuous improvement of what they can offer to their attending artists. MIRA does neither cover living / material nor travelling expenses, although they will be there to greet you either at Brindisi International Airport or the train station at Lecce, and their driver will take to the airport again at the end of your residency.

A National Compact Competition and Exhibit

This is a competitive juried exhibition in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. It is sponsored by the LSU Student Union Art Gallery Advisory Committee.

Expected attendance is 3,000 visitors.

The LSU Student Union Art Gallery Advisory Committee, composed of volunteer LSU students, faculty, staff and community members, is responsible for the selection of art exhibits and programs in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery. They are pleased to sponsor this national two- and three-dimensional compact art competition and exhibit for the 15th year.

ELIGIBILITY: This juried exhibition is open to artists residing in the United States. Submissions need to be less than 20″x20″x20″ excluding matting and framing. Work needs to be completed within the last two years. Works previously exhibited in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery are ineligible.

PRIZES: Artists compete for $6,000 in cash awards.

BETTER WITH TIME

I don’t like aging. I just don’t. I have heard lots of people say that things get better with age. And, while I will grant you that stinky cheese is always better with age (and I love stinky cheese by the way), I am still not seeing the bright side of getting older. Don’t send the emails…they won’t work.

I love new galleries and new galleries with fresh ideas. But, there is a great deal to be said for folks that have been there and done that–who know how to curate, jury and hang a show from years of experience. After 20 years of shows, The Center for Photographic Art has announced a Call for Entries for their 2011 Juried Exhibit. Check it out!

Juried Exhibition

The Center for Photographic Art is pleased to announce the latest in nearly 20 years of Juried Exhibitions. This year, for the first time, registration and submissions will be performed entirely over the Internet.

JURORS:

Ted Orland, Photographer

Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California

Huntington Witherill, Photographer

PRIZES: The jurors will select three images to receive cash prizes: $1000 to the first place, $500 to the second place, and $250 to the third place image.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers, both amateur and professional, working in all still photographic media. There is no theme for this exhibit; any subject matter is eligible for entry into the 2011 Juried Exhibit.

DEADLINE: November 19, 2010.

FEES: CPA members may submit up to three images for $20. Non-members may submit up to three images for $40. Any entrant can submit up to an additional nine images, at an additional cost of $10 each. No more than a total of 12 images may be submitted.

RULES: No more than two images by a single photographer will be accepted into the exhibition. No more than four images by a single photographer will be accepted into the web gallery.

Artists with work accepted for exhibition or for the web gallery grant the CPA non-exclusive rights to use their images to advertise the exhibition and related programs, for display on the CPA website, and for publication in an exhibition catalog, should there be one.
