BOWLING FOR SCROLLS

I’m told the Super Bowl is in January. I say, “I’m told” because a football would have to hit me square between the eyes to make me aware of when the season begins or ends for any sport. Yep, I’m just not that girl. Interestingly enough, the idea of the Super Bowl does conjure image of very specific foods for me despite the fact that I’ve never been to a Super Bowl party. Hmmmm… Chicken Wings anyone?

This next Call for Entries is for the Scroll Bowl V sponsored by Magazine 22. The only similarity between this Call for the Scroll Bowl V and the Super Bowl? They are both in January and both have Bowl in the name, but I had to start somewhere, eh? *Editor’s note: 4 hours after this post went live, the venue and date changed. CALL for ENTRIES: Scroll Bowl V

SCROLL BOWL V will be the featured event at The 22 Magazine Launch Party, on April 2nd, 2011. Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment. Scroll art is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and the folks at The 22 Magazine want to make the experience of viewing a scroll more accessible to everyday life.

MEDIA: There are many different ways to approach art on scrolls, and they ask artists to push those limits-linear storytelling to abstract ideas.

Larger format works are shown on their huge SCROLLIE VIEWER, but they also appreciate smaller format or long scrolls that hang on the wall. Solo, group collaborations, video or performance pieces are acceptable. How each artist attacks the “page” is what makes these events fun.

WHERE: The Scroll Bowl V will take place at Frost Street Art Space in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), an exciting new gallery and screening venue that provides live online streaming of events! Click here for videos of the space.

From the organizers: “What this [change of venue] means for the artists is 1) A week long show instead of one night 2) documentation of the actual event via 4-7 installed cameras 3) live streaming of the event online and 4) more space and much nicer venue. ”

ELIGIBILITY: Artists in any location are welcome to submit. Although they cannot fund anyone’s travel expenses, the folks at The 22 Magazine will be happy to present your scroll for you if you cannot make it to the event.

GATHERING CHERRIES

After my post referencing Chef Cat Cora and the inequality of kitchen roles between the sexes, I received an amusing amount of email about “hunters” versus “gatherers.” I am still writing an art blog, right? Too funny. Can you even imagine what would happen if I, in my 4″ heels, had to gather my food from somewhere other than the grocery store? I can hear you laughing. Why are we talking about hunting and gathering? Well this next Call came to my attention, and I couldn’t resist.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Hunter and Cook, a Canadian-produced contemporary art magazine. You know how I love art publicaton and am constantly preaching its merits. But, the cherry on the sundae is that these editors don’t want your resume or statement…just your work. That is just the way we all like it, eh? Take a look…

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Hunter & Cook Magazine

Hunter and Cook Magazine is accepting submissions for one artist to do a four page project in their next issue – Number 8. Hunter and Cook is a curated contemporary art magazine, produced in Toronto by artists Jay Isaac and Tony Romano.

Hunter & Cook Magazine is widely distributed across Canada (including Chapters and Indigos) the US and Europe and attends major fairs such as Art Basel, TIAF, NADA, and Printed Matters Art Book Fair at PSI Moma.

Hunter & Cook is subscribed to by major North American institutions such as the AGO, MOMA New York, The Musee D’art Contemporain, Montreal etc and is viewed by a wide audience which includes numerous gallerists, writers, curators and collectors.

DEADLINE: December 15, 2010

ENTRY FEE: The fee to enter is $35.00. Artists can submit as many projects as possible to Hunter & Cook, but each entry will cost $35.00.

NOTIFICATION: You will only be contacted if your project is chosen.

SUBMISSIONS: Specs for files are 4 pages in total in the order of 2 full color then 2 black and white, starting with a left page, ending on a right page. Page size is 9″wide x13″high (image size); however, file size of each page needs to account for bleed so please make your file 9.25″ x13.25″ at 300 dpi.

Please send as a tiff file in cmyk for color and grayscale for black and white. Please include files on a disc including titles, artist name and contact information. Nothing more is needed–no statements or resumes.

BUFFALO…in brief.

When you think of Colorado and food, does it conjure images of snow bunnies and hot chocolate? Then clearly you need to revisit Colorado. When I think of Colorado, I think of Buffalo Burgers. Buffalo burgers, once a fringe food, have now found their place in everyday fare. In South Central Colorado, the buffalo burgers are unmatched. I wonder if there’s any chance buffalo will be on the menu at this next exhibit’s opening night…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Arts Center’s 14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Western Colorado. The entry fee is low, and I like the idea of a mix of invited and juried artists…that usually means a built in crowd for opening night. Take a look…

Keeping with the tradition of the Contemporary Exhibit, juror Michael Chavez will select six to eight artists to join the exhibit as invited artists who will give us an exciting survey of established and emerging artists in the contemporary art fields of drawing, painting, photography and mixed media two-dimensional work.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the U.S.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional format in the disciplines of drawing, mixed media, painting, printmaking and photography. Artists may enter up to three works which use paint, photography, drawing materials, printmaking and mixed media as the focus of submissions.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable entry fees are $15 for one entry, $25 for two entries, and $30 for three entries, payable to WCCA upon entry.

JUROR: Michael Chavez is the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado. He has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Wyoming and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas. Over the past 16 years he has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Wyoming Art Museum. In addition to curatorial duties, Chavez is active in the Colorado art community serving on public art committees and judging several exhibitions for Colorado’s cultural institutions. Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook? (although not in my house) …But in the professional world most Chefs are men? Me too. I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South. Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case. But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Check out this Call for Entries for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender from The Freedman Gallery at Albright College. The entry fee for up to three images is only $20, and the juror, Judith Tannenbaum, is spectacular. Did I mention that this art exhibit is open to entries from BOTH genders? Take a look…

Gender Matters/Matters of Gender

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

MEDIA:
Open to all traditional
& non-traditional genre & media
(including video, sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, etc.)

JUROR: Judith Tannenbaum is the first Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. From 1986 until 2000, she served as curator, associate director, and interim director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Tannenbaum has organized numerous exhibitions focusing on painting, photography, sculptural installations, and interdisciplinary work with a particular interest in connections between the visual and performing arts. Since moving to RISD, several projects, including “On the Wall: Wallpaper by Contemporary Artists” (2003), have focused on relationships between fine art and design.

ENTRY FEE:
Entry fee is $20.00.
Artists may submit up to 3 images.

What food reminds you of childhood? Cookies? Spaghetti? Taco Night? Nope, not for me. For me it is Krystals*. I spent a number of my younger years living alone with my Dad, and he didn’t really cook. So, my childhood was a blur of fast food…Krystal, Del Taco and Farmer John’s Smorgasboard. I am so not making this up BTW. But even though my childhood food memory is Krystal, I still LOVE them as an adult. Much the same with the theme for this next call for entries…

Check out the Call for Entries for Cartoon Cult from The Soundry, a former auto body shop that has been converted into a public coffee shop, art gallery, and shared studio space for artists and musicians. You still love cartoons; you know you do. This show is all hung, and the entry fee is low. All of that equals a great resume builder. Give it a try…

The Gallery at the Soundry

The gallery at The Soundry occupies about one quarter of their total space. It’s a rough-around-the-edges kind of space with good lighting and comfortable seating.

They hang their member’s artwork in this area and offer it for sale. This is the place to go in Vienna, Virginia if you’re looking for work from emerging artists, or if you just want to kick back, sip a latte, and take in some new sights.

The artwork in the gallery changes regularly, and a large portion of their gallery space is set aside for installation works.

The garage atmosphere and undergound, working-studio feel give visitors an experience they’re guaranteed not to find anywhere in the region.

Make sure you hurry:

Submissions are due by November 19, 2010.

Delivery of art work is due to The Soundry by November 23 – 30, 2010.

CALL for ENTRIES: 2010 Susquehanna Int’l

When I moved to Gatlinburg around 3 1/2 years ago, I wouldn’t live anywhere without a mountain top view. After several years up here, we are contemplating building a Storage Container house, and I really think I’m going to choose to live on the water this time–the river to be exact. And, I promise it isn’t because of the abundance of River Trout, although they are yummy eats.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2010 Susquehanna International Fine Art Competition whose theme is River Art this year. There is no entry fee so buy a rod and reel and head to the river for a little “research.” Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: 2010 Susquehanna International

This year’s theme of the Susquehanna International Fine Art Competition is “River Art.” All entries must contain a river, real or imagined, in their composition.

This year’s sponsors include the Sunbury Press and West Shore Gallery. Sunbury Press, based in Camp Hill, PA, is a publisher or trade paperback and digital books. Among their offerings, Sunbury has been producing an art book line for individual artists and for art contests.

West Shore Gallery, located in Wormleysburg, PA, is a fine art gallery featuring the work of well-known and emerging artists.

THEME:
All entries must contain a river,
real or imagined in their composition.
This could be any river in the world,
or one from mythology.
The river need not be
the dominant element.

MEDIA: All entries must be two dimensional. There is no minimum or maximum size.

DEADLINE: December 10, 2010

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

CATEGORIES: You may enter up to three entries in each category: Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Drawings/Sketches, Mixed Media/Collage, Traditional Photography (black & white or color, unembellished compositions), Digital (includes painterly effects, embellishments to photography).

SUBMISSIONS:

JPG File Specs: All entries will be JPG files of low resolution — no more than 1 MB per file. Typically this means no more than 4 inches to any side and a resolution of not more than 200 dpi.

Name your jpg files with your first name, underscore, last name, underscore file number. As an example: john_smith_1.jpg

Email Entries: Send 1 email per category. You may attach up to 3 images per category. Send each category entry in a separate email.

Information to include: In the title of the email, note the artist name & category. In the body, note the attached entries, their titles & years created.

PRIZES: Grand Prize: The top entry of the competition will receive a $250 cash prize and be used as the cover image for the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011. Category Winners: The top entry in each category will win $50 and be featured as the lead image in each chapter of the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011.

JURORS: Monica Smith-Talbott, Prof. of Art, Harrisburg Area Community College. Erin Sparler, Prof. of Digital Arts, Central Penn College.

EXHIBITION: All selected entries will have an opportunity to exhibit their work at West Shore Gallery located directly across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, PA’s capital dome. West Shore Gallery hosts monthly exhibitions of well-known and emerging artists from around the country.

It warms my heart that I have been able to feature so many great opportunities from my home state lately. I love art opportunities more than cheesecake…shocking, I know. The $10,000 in cash awards (including $2,000 for Best of Show) in this next show would buy a whole lotta cheesecake though.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tennessee Art League for the 46th Annual Central South Art Exhibition National. Despite the name, which almost leaves the impression it is a Regional show, it is a NATIONAL Opportunity that you shouldn’t miss!

Call for Entries: Tennessee Art League

Founded by a group of Middle Tennessee artists in 1954, and later chartered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution, the Tennessee Art League has enriched the lives of thousands of artists and the community as a cultural center, educational facility and art gallery for fifty-six years.

In 1965, the League started its annual Central South Art Exhibition – now in its 46th year – which, with the generous support of the Friends of the Tennessee Art League, continues to be one of the oldest and most prestigious art competitions in the South and in the nation.

In its commitment to the community, the League provides numerous outreach programs that bring first and meaningful experiences in creating art, especially, to seniors and disadvantaged children. JUROR: Joseph H. Sulkowski began his studies as a painter at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1809. He then continued and finished his studies after five years at the venerable Art Students League of New York. There, he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters, and became, in the very traditional sense of the word, his apprentice.

Mr. Sulkowski has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and the Best in Show Award at the Art in the Mountains exhibition sponsored by Southwest Art magazine. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Arts Club, the American Artists Professional League, and he is a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York.

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this next call, it can now remind me of phenomenal art opportunities as well!

And, while I have had NY shows, I am often excited by NYC shows because of the associated opportunity to eat food from street vendors. I can smell the various cooked meats wafting through the air as I work on this post. I trust all of you have more grounded, academic reasons for wanting to break into the NY arts scene.
